Somaly Mam, Sex Trafficking Survivor, Fights Slavery And HIV/AIDS In Cambodia (SLIDESHOW)

Posted: 11/30/2011 9:01 am

This story is part of a series celebrating HIV/AIDS activists in honor of Thursday's World AIDS Day.

Her house has been burned down. She's had her car jacked. Her daughter was kidnapped, drugged and raped. But still, sex trafficking survivor Somaly Mam says she would rather risk death than give up her work saving slaves in Cambodia.

Sold into prostitution at 12 by her grandfather, Mam was brutalized and raped -- sometimes up to 10 times a day -- throughout her teenage years. While Mam made an unlikely escape to France from the brothel in Cambodia, she couldn't tolerate the cushy life there knowing that thousands of girls were being tortured at home.

So in 1996, Mam returned to the slums of Cambodia and has been fighting forced prostitution and the rampant transmission of HIV/AIDS ever since.

"Our foundation is about the survivor," said Mam, who estimates her age to be about 40. "A survivor in my program means no one can feel how we feel. We know how to talk to them. The foundation empowers the victims and lets them know that we are the survivors."

Mam has saved more than 4,000 slaves since she started her advocacy work.

While an estimated 30,000 children are sold into slavery in Southeast Asia, according to The Somaly Mam Foundation, young girls -- as young as 6 -- are particularly vulnerable in Cambodia. There, it's believed that sleeping with a virgin can cure AIDS.

But at the moment a girl loses her virginity, she completely loses her allure and value.

"Once you're in a brothel, you are bad luck," Mam told The Huffington Post. "You can't get married. They completely destroy you. So you come to hate the people around you. You can't be happy."

She feels as though she will never completely overcome the horror she experienced, getting locked in a cellar with snakes, getting raped on a constant basis and watching her friend get shot and killed. Now, she says the charity she founded and runs is what gives her strength to carry on.

Mam first established AFESIP (Agir Pour les Femmes en Situation Precaire) 15 years ago out of her two-room home. She raids brothels and scours health clinics for victims to save, risking her life each time as she enrages the pimps and brothel owners. Her program, which provides shelter, education and job skills to the victims of sex-trafficking, gained even more momentum in 2007 when she established her funding vehicle, the Somaly Mam Foundation.

Oftentimes Mam gets to the girls after they've already contracted HIV. But whether they're in good health or suffering with the fatal disease, Mam said she pushes all of them to meet their potential.

One survivor, who Mam named "Monday" after the day of the week she was saved, was sold into slavery when she was 6 years old. Today, she's 19 and studying law.

"She was talking about wanting to go [work at] the court because the court treated her really badly," Mam said. "She wore short skirts so the judge talked to her like it made sense that they raped her."

Part of the healing process, Mam shared from her own experience, is being honest and open with the pain she and the survivors have endured. Now divorced, Mam said she isn't interested in sex or developing intimate relationships. The smell of sperm and getting close with men is just too painful a reminder of the torture to which she was subjected.

Though she's abstaining from relationships, Mam makes sure to remind herself to tend to her needs, to stay strong and healthy to fulfill her work.

"I realized I had to take care of myself for my girls," Mam said. "I don't want any of them to get pain from me."

Where is the fact checking here ? This woman has made so many unsubstantiated claims about her life. Where are the millions she collects. Certainly not in the grimy little 'shelter' in Phnom Penh - the one that captured sex workers escape from whenever they can. It all looks so good from the burbs of a US city but it's a different story in Phnom Penh. Everyone from the local cops, and journos to politicians and sex workers know that this Somali Mam story is spin. More accountable journalism please.

George W Bush have signed an executive order to prosecute all American who travel abroad to commit sex crimes especially on child prostitution. The penalty will be enforced by EU and US Laws and risk losing any professional licensure issued by all states. There are FBI agents who are looking for these customers as well as sex service providers to combat these problems. The customers are quite diverse and many are successful business man around the globe.

That looks good on paper. Unfortunately, many local law enforcement officials are easily bribed to look the other way - and victims bought off for very little money. So no charges are ever filed - rendering the US/EU laws inapplicable.

Plus - Cambodian prison is far more scary than anything in the US/EU - so empowering women to take charge in their own communities and making sure predators are caught and imprisoned in Cambodia, will have a much larger impact on this problem than passing laws in the US.

I totally agreed with you since many officials around the globe are bought and never prosecuted. This is why Law Enforcements are so important because it will be Lawlessness if there is no enforcements just like environmental regulations in China. It is extrordinary interesting that the EPA standards are exactly like the US but it is never enforced and many municipalities wants to cut those people who are suppose to serve and protect the public. There will never be justice for the powerless and it remains true in many parts of the world.

This is horrible is is happening to these girls and women. What's worse is that it is happening all over the world, even in "developed" counties. Hopefully Somaly is able to keep herself safe while still saving more women!

Our own governments are involved in this, just like they are involved and are in control of the drug trade that they lie about and supposedly crack down on. Who are they cracking down on, themselves? Lol, it's one big joke. The lord is soon to come. Stay prayed up people.

If you want to better understand this problem, and how to help, the Cambodian Women's Library site at getset-go.org is a good place to start.

It should also be noted that Cambodia was hit by unprecedented, massive flooding last month, affecting nearly 75% of the country (also hit Thailand, which got all the news coverage). And it happened right before the rice harvest, so livelihoods for this year were wiped out. This will have the effect of pushing more girls and young women into a level of desperation that makes them easy prey for sex-traffickers and child-molesters.

Often, predators travel to villages claiming to have a job service that will get young women good jobs in a restaurant or hotel and make enough money to support their family back home. Women get in the truck and are never seen again.

FYI - You might also want to google news about Cambodian women sent to work in Malaysia.

See? They really are not "like us" over there. This is a culture in which grandfathers pimp their granddaughters and fathers rape their own daughters. In fact, most anthropologists would say that this behavior isn't even remotely human. Even chimps and gorillas don't do this stuff. So don't bother accusing me of hate speech for pointing this out, because you know it's true and because nobody's advocating wholesale genocide. Yet.

Ah, but you missed one tiny little detail - THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE CUSTOMERS ARE MEN FROM THE UNITED STATES AND ARAB COUNTRIES! There would BE NO sex trade in Cambodia, Thailand, and Brazil if there were not an endless flow of pedophiles from the USA, some going in arranged tours, wanting to rape and even rape and kill little girls. And who are you kidding? Parents are having children in the US just to use in Child pornography. Read the book "Broken" by Shy Keenan just for starters about how it works in the US. Nice try, though.

The only way this kind of thing will ever stop happening is if the perpetrators are not alive to commit these crimes. And yes, most of their sexually aggressive and sociopathic behavior is genetically identifiable, so we don't even have to allow most of them to be born at all. We should have the UN mandate amniocentesis if these goobers want kids that the UN will have to feed and clothe and house anyway. If the child is male and found to have the wrong genes, so sorry, Junior isn't getting born. Done. My way would work. In a generation most rapists and murderers would simply cease being born.

It's rare in the west, is not a cultural tenet, and it is vigorously punished. It is an institution and considered respectable employment in Southeast Asia and Africa.

Correct and the governments of this world are behind all of this, but most people don't want to believe it because they want a false sense of security. It suits people better to be in denial so they can live fake happy lives. The fact is, whether anyone likes it or not, satan is the god of this world until Christ returns with a sword to destroy him and establishes HIS kingdom 2 Cor 4:4. The governments of this world bow to and worship satan for power in this world, because he is running things. Does he own it? No. That's why he wants to destroy human life any way possible, because his time is drawing very very short. P.S. his people have also infiltrated churches, so it is up to us to build our own real relationships with the father. NOT metaphysical, new age etc . . that's all satanic. Simply talking with the father day to day and letting him fill you with the holy spirit.
