Superman 'Action Comics #1' Sells For $2.16 Million In Auction

MATT MOORE   11/30/11 08:20 PM ET   AP

PHILADELPHIA — A rare and pristine copy of the first issue of Action Comics, famed for the first appearance of Superman, has set a record Wednesday for the most money paid for a single comic book: $2.16 million.

The issue, graded at 9.0, was auctioned starting Nov. 11 online at . The starting bid was just $1 but there was a reserve price of $900,000. Neither the name of the buyer nor seller was disclosed. www.comicconnect.com

It's the first time a comic book has broken the $2 million barrier. The issue was published in 1938 and cost just 10 cents.

"When we broke the record in 2010 by selling the Action Comics No. 1, graded at 8.5, for $1.5 million, I truly believed that this was a record that would stand for many years to come," said Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles.

The previous record set in March 2010 was followed by the sale of another copy for $1 million. But neither of those issues was in as good a condition as the issue that sold Wednesday, though it's pedigree of setting records was already documented. Twice before it set the record for the most expensive book ever, selling for $86,000 in 1992 and $150,000 in 1997.

But in 2000, it was stolen and thought lost until it was recovered in a storage shed in California in April this year.

About 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 are believed to be in existence, and only a handful of those in good condition.

After it was stolen, Fishler said, collectors figured it would never be found or, worse, would be destroyed.

"Clearly, I was wrong. Not in my wildest imagination could I have predicted that this legendary, stolen Action Comics No. 1 would be found, graded at 9.0 and break the record a year and a half later," he said.

In about 1959 my Mom took my huge comic book collection and had a bonfire in the backyard burning every single one of them. I often wonder how much they would have been woth today....

not as much as your ego
12:24 PM on 12/02/2011
That makes no sense. His ego can't be worth anything because it's an ego...and on top of that, that's not being egotistic, that's living in the past. Get it right or go home.

I don't think there's a full moon tonight so there must be some other explanation for such a dorky comment.

That kind of money will feed a lot of little hungry American children, and some toys for Christmas, and a check to Focus Adolescent Services who saves the lives of American children; the sick, the abused and more.
12:12 PM on 12/02/2011
yeah and so could your money.
12:25 PM on 12/02/2011
You should take some of your OWN money and put it towards feeding little hungry American children. Ever think about that? =)

My children have been telling me for decades that the three I have in mint condition are worth money. I just never knew how much. I don't get this "grading system." I must find out who does that.

How could a comic reading couch patato like that get that kind of money to afford a comic??
12:12 PM on 12/02/2011
whos the real couch potato here cbjaws?
12:29 PM on 12/02/2011
Actually I'm at work, but nice try ;)
Hence why I have money, I was simply asking how could a couch potato really make that much money when all they do is sleep in a parents basement??

Something is screwed up in this world where there are people starving in this world, familes living in their cars, and people dying because they can't afford the medicine they need, BUT a comic book sold for 2 million.
09:23 AM on 12/02/2011
What is the man just supposed to give his money away. Don't shame him because he is rich and wants a comic book. Shame the people living out their cars instead of driving them to work.
09:49 AM on 12/02/2011
I am positive that families do not want to live in their cars. Many middle class hardworking families are just one missed paycheck to homelessness. This economic downtourn has cost thousands of people their jobs and loss of their homes, while big CEOs still reap big profits.
The middle class is the backbone of America.
The rich WON'T pay (or would rather buy 2m comic books),
the poor CAN'T pay,
but the middle class ALWAYS pays.
Mark my words, as the middle class goes, so goes America.
A day of reckoning is coming.

Guess it's lost on me, 2 mil for a comic book about superman. really?! I never was a big fan of superman mainly because ..... hell your superman why do you need to hide your identity? who can hurt you? I would just have a press meeting and tell the world I'm here to take out the bad guys and if they for one second even think of hurting in anyway the folks I love there won't anything left of them when I get my hands on them. Now Mighty Mouse he was the coolest, he got the girl in the end .
09:38 AM on 12/02/2011
You know these guys were not real, don't you?
11:02 AM on 12/02/2011
