Stephen Adly Guirgus Protests White Leads In 'The Motherfucker With The Hat' Hartford Production (SLIDESHOW)

The writer of the Tony-award winning play "The Motherfucker With the Hat," is criticizing a Connecticut production for casting two white actors as the play's Puerto Rican lead characters, reports the Times. Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, who is not himself Latino, posted a note to his Facebook page today excoriating the Hartford-based company TheaterWorks for making no effort to cast the leads consistent with the identities he created for them. From Guirgis' Facebook page:

In Hartford Connecticut, the mayor is Puerto Rican. But in TheaterWorks production of my play in Hartford - the 2 lead Puerto Rican characters are played by white actors. The play was cast in NYC & Conn, and if you look at the breakdown here, you will see that not only did they not cast Latinos, they didn't even seek Latinos for the 2 Latino leads!!! If this disturbs you, please repost.

Guigis told the Hartford Courant he took to his Facebook page after trying and failing to "deal with the issue 'in-house.'" He was apparently unimpressed by a letter TheaterWorks founder Steve Campos sent him over the weekend vouching for the play's director, Tazewell Thompson, who Campos wrote had a "nightmarishly tiny window" in which to cast "the very best actors available."

Thompson, who is black, sent Guigis a letter Monday apologizing for not taking more time, calling the casting "indefensible," and writing "at length" of his years spent trying to cast minority actors, reports the Times. He'd worked previously with both of the white actors he cast, Ben Cole and Clea Alsip.

The Hartford production did cast a Puerto Rican actor as Cousin Julio, reports the Times. On Broadway, the "self-destructive" Puerto Rican couple at the heart of the play had been realized by Bobby Cannavale and Elizabeth Rodriguez. Both Cannavale and Rodriguez share Latino backgrounds (Carnnavale's mother is Cuban, reports the Times, while Rodriguez is "of Puerto Rican descent"), and were nominated for Tonys for their performances.

The Hartford run ends Sunday, but Guigus told the Courant he hopes to send a message to directors considering future stagings. Regional productions are scheduled in Los Angeles and Miami, with hints at reviving the Broadway cast, which included Chris Rock.

The 2008 sleeper hit recast the ethnicities of nearly all the Asian-American MIT students who inspired it, starring Jim Sturgess as a character based on Chinese-American pro gambler Jeff Ma. Ma hit back at claims that he was a "race traitor" for not strong-arming the studio, telling USA Today: "I would have been a lot more insulted if they had chosen someone who was Japanese or Korean, just to have an Asian playing me."

Judge the actors by the job they do and not by their race. If the playwright insists upon this he should have made this known BEFORE these actors were cast. It's a shame. The gracious thing to do would have been to allow these actors to finish, compliment them on their work and then make the requirement for future productions - although I would disagree with it. What a shame.

Texas Mexican-Americans were angry when Hollywood selected Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican, to play Selena in the biopic of the same name, but were mollified by her award-winning performance. At least they did,'t cast Madonna.

I agree with Stephen Adly Guirgus, but this is nothing new, it happens all the time.

Puerto Rico is about 75% white. "A recent study of Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 800 individuals found that patrilineal input, as indicated by the Y-chromosome, showed over 70% of Puerto Ricans could trace their ancestry to male European ancestors, 20% could trace it to male African ancestors, and less than 10% could trace it to male Native American, ancestors."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Puerto_Rico

My friend read "Starship Troopers" and told me that most of the characters were black, which the movie changed.

I have no idea where your friend got the idea that most of the characters in Starship Troopers were black - the main character was Filipino, the others were a mixture drawn from all over the world. The movie bore little resemblance to the book though.

The idea that he can't find minority actors is hogwash. I was an actress for ten years- and am a black woman. There are tons of minority actors out there who would love the opportunity to work. Especially considering that lead roles are few and far between. He could have found two great Latino actors to play those parts.

That happens a lot now. The Persians were complaining when a white actor was cast in "Prince of Persia."

You might want to re-visit your notes from "Historical Anthropology 101"..
Persian is NOT a race, nor has it ever been.

And categorically, Persian/Iranians are caucasian.

But as it is an obsession in the USA to categorize all non-English speakers with non-fair skin as "non-white", I guess our American ignorance will once again trump historical fact.

I think that Hollywood is making Latinos pay for the fact that J-Lo is going out with a guy who wears wife-beaters and backwards baseball hats.

Happens everyday!! The green zone film with matt damon was also inspired by the heroic efforts of a latino in the US army in Irak. Latinos are made to be the bad guys in hollywood they are not often portrayed as heros or good guys. No wonder why people have such negative views of us.

I agree that is Hollywood's general portrayal of Latinos. So liberal, so two-faced.

amazing that this playwright can be so igno rant...following his "logic" if you're Puerto Rican or Black (or even white American for that matter) you can't do Shakespeare because only a real Englishman can portray any character in his plays..... guess he would have opposed Natalie Wood portraying a Puerto Rican in West Side Story or he would object to Bernecio Del Toro portraying a character who is not Puerto Rican in any of his movies...pretty sad...

good luck with the title....Maybe its just me, but I kind of find the title more offensive to PR's than the casting of non PR's to play PR characters.

Guirgis is not latino himself yet he wrote a play about latinos. I don't get his gripe. Is he the only non-latino that can portray the latino experience (whatever that is)? What an ego.
