Just got back from Machu Picchu on Monday. Definitely worth the trip. You can't take a bad picture there. The elevation at Cusco is killer. If you smoke or have a heart condition I would suggest you consider a different vacation.

I had trouble in Cusco, too. Did you get to Aguas Calientes? That's the spot where I started to feel woozy.

Anybody wants to go to Macchu Pichu better hurry if you are getting close to 50. The altitude is really high, and anyone with upper respiratory conditions who can't walk uphill and breathe thinned out air at the same time is on his own. Most organized tour companies look very closely who they will take. On the other hand the pyramids are a good bet. Another health tip: if you have a compromised immune system don't go in any of the tombs. There is fungus growing on the walls from the humidity from peoples breath, which can cause upper respiratory infection.
I have seen it, and it is not very noticeable. I knew a woman who had just finished her cancer treatments successfully, was in remission and her family took her on a dream trip to Egypt. She was thrilled with the trip, was home a few weeks and died from a lung infection.

Machu Picchu is actually lower in altitude (2,430 metres - 7,970 ft) than the city from whence the tours depart (Cusco) and it shouldn't be any problem for normally-healthy visitors of any age. The train takes you to the buses and the buses drive up to the MP park. There is no climbing involved unless you want to do something extra like climb the nearby Huayno Picchu mountain.

Diamox (acetazolamide)! Sort of miracle drug for those of us with altitude sickness. Anyway, can help. Won't keep the mummies away, though.

The place I want to see before I die is the house I was born in that little town 8000 miles away. The rest ie beauty but emptiness. Give me my youth back and I would day the happiest human being.

Winner: Machu Picchu (from the southern Quechua Machu Pikchu, "Old Mountain") is the contemporary name given to a llaqta (ancient Inca Andean town) built mainly of stone in the mid-fifteenth century on the rocky promontory that links the mountains of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu in the eastern foothills of the Central Andes in southern Peru.

I loved Machu Picchu ,especially the rebuilt part and the train ride, but I would go back to India in a heart beat. Totally out of my comfort zone and so much to see.

Only the rich guys that make the decisions for the republican party can afford these places.
