Ethan Zohn: 'I'm Going To Outrun Cancer'

Posted: 12/01/11 07:49 AM ET

Ethan Zohn has been through a lot: winning "Survivor 3: Africa," dribbling a soccer ball from Boston to Washington, D.C., experiencing a torn ACL, and receiving two cancer diagnoses. Others may have given in, but Zohn has found a way to rise above these challenges -- by just moving forward.

After his second diagnosis this past September, his doctors warned him he probably shouldn't run the upcoming New York City marathon, but his heart was set on the race. "I'm going to outrun cancer," Zohn told AOL's You've Got. "I'm in charge here, not you, cancer."

Watch the video for more of his inspirational story.

Why wouldn't his doctors want him to run? I highly doubt there is any evidence that exercise leads to worse cancer outcomes, and even if it did, this might be his last chance to run a marathon. That would be his choice to make. The doctor's job would be merely to inform him of the risks.

I know this is off-topic, but I have a real problem with doctors imposing activity restrictions on patients when there is nothing to back them; especially when the doctors are out of shape themselves.
