Iran British Embassy Stormed: Students Released

Iran British Embassy Stormed

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran on Thursday banned foreign media from covering any rallies in front of British diplomatic missions in the capital, in the latest fallout from the storming of Britain's embassy in Tehran by pro-government demonstrators.

The attack on the compounds on Tuesday was preceded by an apparently state-approved rally outside the British Embassy to denounce Britain's support for the latest round of Western sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

"We inform all representatives of the foreign media that their presence at rallies in the city, especially in front of the British Embassy and Gholhak garden, or residential compound, is not permitted unless authorized in advance," Iran's foreign media office said in a statement.

After mass anti-government demonstrations in 2009, Iran banned against foreign media from covering opposition protests, but this is the first time Tehran has barred foreign media from covering pro-government rallies.

Tuesday's rampage at the British compound went on for hours, with the mob hauling down Union Jack flags, torching a vehicle and tossing looted documents through windows. Protesters replaced the British flags with Iran's flag and a banner in the name of a 7th-century Shiite saint, Imam Hussein, and one looter showed off a picture of Queen Elizabeth II apparently taken off a wall.

The incident has deepened Iran's isolation and significantly escalated tensions with the West. It prompted Britain to pull its diplomats out of Iran, shutter the ransacked embassy and order all Iranian diplomats out of the U.K. within 48 hours. Germany, France and the Netherlands have recalled their ambassadors in solidarity.

Italy and Spain both summoned Iranian envoys to condemn the storming of the British embassy.

On Thursday, Iran allowed diplomats from 16 EU nations and eight other countries, including Russia, Brazil and Turkey, to visit the ransacked British diplomatic buildings. A Western diplomat who took part in the trip told The Associated Press the visit aimed to make a quick assessment of the damage to the site. He did not elaborate.

Also, Norway reopened its embassy in Tehran after a 24-hour closure due to security concerns following the attack.

Late Wednesday, Iranian authorities released 11 hardline protesters detained for the attack on the British diplomatic buildings, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported Thursday. There was no immediate explanation for the release.

Under Iranian law, damaging property carries a prison term of up to three years. It could, however, indicate the 11 have high-level protection from circles within the Iranian establishment.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has remained silent on the attack on the British diplomatic mission, but Iran's foreign ministry expressed regret and called the embassy assault "unacceptable."

However, hard-liners have spoken out in support of the protesters. Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the "wrath of (the protesters) resulted from several decades of domination-seeking behavior of Britain."

The storming of the embassy came two days after Iran's parliament voted to reduce ties with Britain following London's support for the recently upgraded U.S. sanctions on Tehran.

Tehran's relations with Britain have become increasingly strained over the past few months, largely driven by increasing tensions over Tehran's refusal to halt uranium enrichment – a process that can lead to nuclear arms. The West says Iran is developing atomic weapons; Tehran denies the claims.

An Iranian hard-line protester runs inside the British Embassy as a diplomatic vehicle is set on fire by demonstrators who stormed the embassy, in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011. Dozens of hard-line Iranian students stormed the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, bringing down the Union Jack flag and throwing documents from windows in scenes reminiscent of the anger against Western powers after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The mob moved into the diplomatic compound two days after Iran's parliament approved a bill that reduces diplomatic relations with Britain following London's support of recently upgraded Western sanctions on Tehran over its disputed nuclear program. The news will get out without the press, just like OWS in NY. The savvy population will always find a way to get the news across if for no other reason, to provide vital information to family and friends that may otherwise end up the the wrong place at the wrong time.

The British should round up a bunch of Millwall fans, feed them beer and speed and set them on Iranian embassy before their diplomats are put on planes and sent home.

If you do not believe that Iran is one of the most moderate Islamic countries, then wait until Slafis (wahhabis) take the major share of power in Libya and Egypt through "democratic" elections.

By supporting Israel, West pushes Muslims to be more militant and take on West's vital interests everywhere.

"Early returns suggested the Salafi parties may have won as much as 20-25 percent of the seats, analysts said."

West should change its attitude otherwise the WWIII and clash of East and West is on horizon.

China and Russia had both sent signals that they will fight on the side of East.

Respect brings respect. West should start to respect the East.

West is controlled by a bunch of Zionist Bankers and unconditional support of Zionist Regime in the main reason West should have such a out of touch foreign policy.

Iran is moderate comparing to Nazi Germany. So?
02:05 PM on 12/02/2011
I am not endorsing Iranian regime, but he is accurate in his assessment. The 9/11 hijackers, al qaeda, al qaeda in Iraq and everywhere else follow Wahhabi/salafi ideology, that incidentally considers the Shia to be heretics because of their progressive approach to Islam. For example, the Shia Iran doesn't have a problem with genetic research, abortion, cloning and stem cell research. Also, women have a lot of rights in comparison. 65% of university student in Iran are female. Women drive taxis, trucks, are firemen, policemen etc,

Arab spring will soon teach West to respect other cultures and Muslims.

Iran is very moderate compared to Salfis that will take over Libya for example.

West should learn that change is not always necessary means change to better. Ghaffafi and Saddam was much better for West. West is headed by a bunch on incompetent leaders who have the power only because of the deep pockets of Zionist bankers.

By being militant and attacking Muslim countries, West will radicalize the regimes that are forming after all the Western puppets are falling in ME.

You want to have respect, you have to respect others. This work in personal relationship and also will work in relationship between civilizations, if you can call what West has now a civilization.

I'm no fan of the IRI, but this is all blowback from repeated meddling, manipulation and warmongering.
It was MI-5 and the CIA that carried out the coup that ousted Mossadegh and re-installed the Pahlavis to the throne, but hey- events in the past don't have consequences, right? The US, and Great Britain are collectively guilty of crimes and atrocities rivalled only by Gengis Khan and the Bolsheviks in scope and viciousness, yet we are taught that American and British meddling and warmongering has always been a benign, gentle thing. It's as if Opium wars, artificially created famines, the thermal destruction of entire cities by area bombing and the use of atomic weapons against civilian targets were okay, yet attacking an embassy and breaking windows were a capital sin, an object of horror. If The US and the UK had not been meddling and warmongering in the region, especially since the First World War, perhaps you would see less xenophobia and resentment.
It is also extremely ironic that Iran is now under international condemnation for the nuclear program started with the US blessing under the Shah.

Why am I surprised to see people defending such behavior?

What is wrong with you people? I bet you'd be outraged if it was BNP and EDL members storming the Iranian embassy in the UK...
05:42 PM on 12/01/2011
Looks like it is time to do some target practice, with our cruise missiles, in Iran. We can practice with our "bunker buster " bombs too.
04:43 PM on 12/01/2011
Released, paid, and sent home. Is anyone suprised by this?

Iran's embassies were at.tacked today in Britain and Switz. I think. I guess people are fed up with Iran and don't want to see them get away with the at.tack on the British embassy like they got away with the at.tack on the US embassy in '79.
05:36 PM on 12/01/2011
Iran is just sitting their, being threatened for the last 8 years by the US and Israel and now you're fed up?

They release thugs who stormed and attacked a foreign diplomatic building. But they keep in prison human rights campaigners for women's rights, or their relatives.

Kind of tells you a lot about this regime. Hey, why shouldn't they have nuclear weapons, huh?

The heck with the Brits. That frog Churchill (as Colonial Secretary) and his nation of shopkeepers destroyed Iran's (Persia's) constitutional monarchy in 1921, they and the Russians invaded Iran in 1941, and they finessed the US into destroying Iran's democracy in 1953. I'd call this a bit of payback time.

And how old were you when the monarchy fell in 1921? Were in active in the armed forces during 1953...Oh so this didn't effect you in anyway. Interesting.

Ok how about Xerxes invading the western world? I imagine the payback from that would be the Brits overthrowing a monarch almost a century ago.

They were release because the Iranian goverment wanted them to do exactly what they did.
01:07 PM on 12/01/2011
Well of course they were released, they were henchmen of the Abinajab (sp) regime. The real criminals are the Clerics and political leaders who fomented it.
02:38 PM on 12/01/2011
Considering the Iran/British history over the past ~200 years, and recent British decision to sanction Iranian central bank over trumped up allegations, I doubt the regime had to do much fomenting.

They held a "STATE SPONSORED ANTI BRITISH PROTEST" in front of the embassy...yeah Iran's government didn't inspire this. Stop apologizing for a regime and people you know nothing about.

Really? Did those college kids (who actually were just walking outside and about whom all of the allegations were made up) storm an embassy and start fires, destroy personal property, etc.

Nope.

Why, of course not....they only made gasoline bombs and threw them at the police. Hey, just some kids having a little fun, right?

The Iranian leadership has used "rent a mob" before. These people were doing what they were told to do. It is a widely used tactic by totalitarian governments.
02:55 PM on 12/01/2011
It's funny you should write that. When our CIA overthrew Iran's democracy in 1953, CIA agent Kermit Roosevelt (TR's grandson) did exactly that, paying fundamentalists to riot in the streets. Does that suggest that we are a totalitarian government?
