Dr. Seuss Exhibit Opening With Theodor Seuss Geisel's Rarely Seen Works

Rarely Seen Dr. Seuss Works Go On Display

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A trove of previously unshown Dr. Seuss works is going on display at P & C Art Gallery.

"Secrets of the Deep," which opens Friday, features works that were never shown during Theodor Seuss Geisel's (aka Dr. Seuss') lifetime. Some were so hidden they were kept behind a false door in the La Jolla, Calif., home that Geisel shared with his wife Audrey.

These pieces were Geisel's private works, he called them his "midnight paintings" -- they include a self-portrait of Geisel as a rather bedraggled Cat in the Hat, a sweet sketch of two snuggling fish, a softly cutting parody of La Jolla socialites and other personal, sometimes dark, always whimsical works.

The Dr. Seuss pieces being shown at P & C are not originals, they're limited edition prints produced after Geisel's death. Ask William Dreyer, curator of "The Art of Dr. Seuss" -- the licensing arm of the Dr. Seuss operation -- about the controversy surrounding these and other of Dr. Seuss's posthumously-produced works on Friday and Saturday, when Dreyer will be at P & C talking about Dr. Seuss's life and art.

Dr. Seuss' "Secrets of the Deep" shows at two of P & C Gallery's locations -- in Old Town Alexandria at 212 King St. and in Georgetown at 3108 M St NW. The exhibit runs at both locations from Dec. 2 to Dec. 24. Curator William Dreyer will be speaking at 7 p.m. in Alexandria on Friday and at 7 p.m. in Georgetown on Saturday.
