Time's Joe Klein Blasts Romney Campaign's 'Idiotic' Media Strategy

Mitt Romney Time

NEW YORK -- Although Newt Gingrich may be surging lately, it's Mitt Romney who's stealing magazine covers this week. The former Massachusetts Governor graces the current issue of Time and will appear on the covers of The New York Times Magazine and Parade this weekend.

Despite all the high-profile pieces, Romney hasn't been spending too much time chatting up magazine writers. In fact, he only sat down with Parade, a move that reflects the 2012 campaign's strategy to limit national media exposure and the type of lengthy sit-downs that were more commonplace during his 2008 run. In October, the Washington Post's Karen Tumulty told The Huffington Post that Romney was "quite accessible" during the last election cycle and offered her plenty of access for substantive pieces that she wrote for Time.

This time around, however, Time wasn't as lucky. Joe Klein, who wrote this issue's cover story, didn't get to fly around with Romney while working on it. Klein had tough words for how the campaign is handling media access.

"It's an idiotic strategy," Klein said. "Because usually what politicians do is to do big profile-y sort of interviews at the front end of a campaign and then close off access at the end."

Klein said that Romney gave him "great access when pushing universal health care in Massachusetts," a subject he wrote a column about at the time. Klein said he expected Romney to talk to him for this piece, especially since "he and I had not a bad relationship in the past and I thought he's the smartest, most mainstream of these Republican candidates, and Time is a pretty mainstream publication."

Romney hasn't done interviews with the major newsweeklies yet this year, and he hasn't appeared on a Sunday morning show since 2010. Romney recently had a contentious interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, which Klein pointed to as evidence the campaign should have been more willing to put their candidate out in front of a national audience, earlier on in the primary race. "If he made himself accessible to Fox News a year ago, he could have taken care of a lot of the flip-flop questions," Klein said. "They've delayed it until now."

The Romney campaign shot back following Klein's critique.

"Mitt Romney does plenty of interviews," said adviser Eric Fehrnstrom in an email. "The fact he didn't do one with Joe Klein is what has Joe Klein upset."

"We just did major spreads with Parade and People magazine where both Mitt and Ann sat for interviews," he continued. "We'll do more as we go forward, both on TV and in print."

By giving access to Parade and People, the campaign may be hoping to highlight Romney's softer side -- more human than "Romney-bot," as the New York Times Magazine headline described the candidate. The interviews also allow Romney to speak about faith and family, while getting a few softball questions lobbed his way that would be less likely to come from more politically oriented publications.

The Parade interview with David Gergen promises readers "A Mitt Romney You Haven't Seen Yet," and includes an 18-image "Meet the Romneys" spread that Politico's Mike Allen likened to the "Republican Kennedys." Each magazine asked about Romney's iPad or iPod playlist.

Robert Draper, who wrote the Times Magazine cover story and who was also not granted a sit-down, seems to accept that the campaign will run its press operation as it sees fit.

"It's his prerogative to speak or not speak to whomever he wants," Draper said over email. "I don't take it personally and I've got to write the story regardless of whether he participates in it."

Correction: This post originally misstated the date of Romney's last Sunday show appearance.

Maybe military service should be a requirement for public office, so that we can get some tougher people in politics, rather than some spoiled rich kid who can't handle questions from, good heavens, he's a Republican -- FOX news.

When you have something of value to say, you seek and accept media outlets. When you have something to hide, you shun public attention and the scrutiny that comes with it.

Is Mitt hiding his sanity from the baggers, his insanity from the rest of us, or something else from everyone?

Waiting for the polls to come back before he (momentarily) makes his mind up about something?

It certainly is up to Romney who he speaks to. It is also up to the voter who they vote for. Hopefully, not Romney. Who do you get when you vote for Romney? You really don't know because he seems to have been on both sides of every issue.

I don't think Mitt Romney knows who Mitt Romney is. But he thinks you should... probably vote for him.

Mitt seems to view running for office the same way he'd approach assembling a swing set for the backyard: simply follow steps 1-27 in order and success will be yours. He doesn't think on his feet and he's socially awkward with anyone outside his own elevated economic status. Which is why his support keeps dwindling the longer he runs---he doesn't know how to build relationships, but he's pretty at going from point Point A to Point B if he doesn't have to deviate from the planned path.

....and so is Obama. Both men aren't comfortable around ordinary people. That's what elitism does to you. Just look at the way he's treated the black community?

Apparently, people are suppose to start supporting Mitt over Newt because he's more of a family man. That's the strategy. I think, though, that in these very tough times people just want someone with solutions, even if they have had three marriages. I can see the logic in drawing that kind of a distinction with Newt, but taking the fluff route of rolling out his family in lightweight publications only adds to the impression that he lacks substance.

Doesn't anyone else find this fact a little disturbing that the person who wants to be President of the United States of America will not talk to the media? Why not? Only people who "lawyer up" won't answer regular questions. What does Mittens have to hide?

He's merely waiting for the rest of the candidates to implode. It's actually not a bad strategy considering every time one of them is in the spotlight, they make some blunder or gaffe that causes them to lose support. I'd wait it out, too...

I understand what you're saying and we certainly have witnessed it, but you've got to have confidence in what you believe in so that the message doesn't keep changing, as with Mitt. He comes off as combatitive when he does do interviews. It just can't be a good strategy. People are still bringing up the gaffe that Obama made with the "57 states" blunder. They all make mistakes but it shouldn't deter you from communicating to the very people that will decide your fate.

Parade and People? Wow, those are two really hard-news publications. What's next? Teen Vogue and Highlights for Children? The reality is that th man has turned a hard 180 from prior positions and he finally has learned that nothing is forgotten in the days of digital media.

Team Romney has shrewdly determined that voters won't like Mitt if they get to know him.
