'Jesus Stag Night Club': Johnny Depp Blasted By Christian Coalition For Song Involvement

Johnny Depp has found himself in a holy mess.

The Oscar-nominee, who moonlights as a guitarist and singer, pitched in work for British group Babybird's new song, "Jesus Stag Night Club." The act, spearheaded by Depp's friend Stephen Jones, wrote the song about a bunch of guys who go on a stag night -- or, bachelor party -- and get a party-happy Jesus doppelgänger to get them hooked up with all the finer things that a night of madness requires.

The night, predictably, becomes engulfed in madness, with drunken shenanigans leading to forgotten hours. A sampling of the tongue-in-cheek lyrics:

Saw a man in the street lying on the floor beaten up/ He had a fish finger sandwich and a yellow M coffee cup/ I bent down drunk and tried to pick him up/ But when I turned around I could see...it was Jesus.../ I can't remember where I was last night/ Think I was hanging on a church spire/ Tied by my ankles to a weathervane

Christian groups, no doubt big fans of Depp's previous wholesome catalog, especially his various work as late friend Hunter S. Thompson, were outraged at the song, with Lee Douglas of the Christian Coalition going so far as to condemn him to an eternity of pain and suffering for his participation.

"I'm sure he thinks he's being very funny but he's simply a disgrace," he said in a statement. "One day johnny Depp and his cronies will face the judgment of our Lord and they will burn in hell for this filth."

Depp has worked with said cronies before; just last year, he pitched in on the song "Unloveable" and even directed the music video.

The man can do what he wants. He owes no one an apology. If anyone should feel a need to apologize, it should be the people trying to tell other people how to run their lives. Ridiculous.

First of all..JOHNNY DIDNT WRITE AND SING THIS SONG ..and if people wants to blame someone BLAME THE BAND AND STEPHEN JONES.This is so simply..,and I'd like this group of Christians dont judge JD because Jesus called hypocrites are those who see the sin in others and dont see their own sin..and nobody is perfect.By the way..I dont think Johnny is a bad guy..and I dont know if he belives in God..but I always heard him saying to their fans.."bless you"..,so why does he say that if he dosen't belive ? weird..doesn't it'? This is friken unreal! Ok so number one Johny Depp is an artist. He does what he wants and he's not affraid to take risks. if you don't like it then don't listen to it. Condemming a person for expressing his talents to hell and an eternity of pain?? Really?? I think that is wrong. There is only one judge for us all and it's not this christain group. They have no right to say such things! I live in America. I've never heard of this group till now. I like this song, and I see nothing wrong withit what so ever. And i am a christain to. I think this group needs to get a grip, and quit picking on people who don't deserve it. We will all be judged someday. That day is not today.

Was I the only one who thought the song was interesting, lyrically especially, by invoking Jesus as a figure that in this day and this age, in the zeitgeist of intolerance and fear, people would simply step-over today, is interesting...and that it is only by destabilizing the usual ways of seeing, by being drunk, that he was lucky enough to have even glimpsed him at all.

Some of our posters, and self-appointed "judge" Lee Douglas from the article, he in flowing black robes and a scowl upon his face, seem to want to run with the 'statue smashers,' that wonderful group that waged war through Europe against art by smashing it wherever they found it, first the nudity, then the whole piece.
Dutch statue smashers, our nuns called them.
You can still go into their churches today...many offshoots of that Luther-inspired revolt (their attempt to take over world-wide domination of the religious business) and see....blank....nothing.
No art.
Or some picture of Jesus looking like Jesus of Malibu, rather than Jesus the Middle Eastern man and carpenter.

For some reason your reply was removed by a moderator. I did get a chance to read it and did not find it offensive. I respect your right to believe as you do. I also ask that you not pray for me because I find the thought of it repulsive. I have no doubt that you are a good person. It saddens me to think of the limits imposed by all religions including Christianity. For obvious reasons I will not pray for you, however, that does not stop me from wishing you well. My hope is that as you experience the only life that you will ever know you will learn tolerance and embrace everyone's right to live without your judgement.

Kind of hard to reconcile that, I mean both of those ideas.
Jesus loves you, unconditionally, and his arms are open...unless...you are....and here the smile slowly turns to a withering scowl, the forehead creases the eyes narrow and wow, it's eternal judgment time, for being, not someone who destroyed the world's economy by greed and then took 16 billion in TARP and gave themselves bonuses from that money, no, but damnation if you are....gay.

The internal contradictions of being Republican, of camels slipping through the eyes of needles, and other difficulties, just pile up.

It's fashionable to hate the poor, to blame them. And oh yes, the rich will start giving us jobs, if we suk up enough to them, identify enough with them, and hate who they hate....then maybe we won't be like the poor, even though for many, WE are the poor. Or soon to be. Families without professionals among them, are doomed to multiple part-time, low-paying jobs without real wages, which is why national health care was important to pass.

To be Republican and not be part of the 1% is so foolish and contradictory a position, as to rival being a Log Cablin, e.g. gay Republican, joining a party whose platform says you are not even a real person. You can be 'cured' of who you are, by praying away the gay, the Bachmann, and I mean, the Marcus way!
