Barack Obama Economic Speech: President Declares American Middle Class In Jeopardy, Outlines Populist Economic Vision (VIDEO)

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. — Declaring the American middle class in jeopardy, President Barack Obama on Tuesday outlined a populist economic vision that will drive his re-election bid, insisting the United States must reclaim its standing as a country in which everyone can prosper if provided "a fair shot and a fair share."

While never making an overt plea for a second term, Obama's offered his most comprehensive lines of attack against the candidates seeking to take his job, only a month before Republican voters begin choosing a presidential nominee. He also sought to inject some of the long-overshadowed hope that energized his 2008 campaign, saying: "I believe America is on its way up."

In small-town Osawatomie, in a high school gym where patriotic bunting lined the bleachers, Obama presented himself as the one fighting for shared sacrifice and success against those who would gut government and let people fend for themselves. He did so knowing the nation is riven over the question of whether economic opportunity for all is evaporating.

"Throughout the country, it's sparked protests and political movements, from the tea party to the people who've been occupying the streets of New York and other cities," Obama said.

"This is the defining issue of our time," he said in echoing President Theodore Roosevelt's famous speech here in 1910.

"This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class," Obama said. "At stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home and secure their retirement."

For Obama, saddled with a weak national economic recovery, the speech was a chance to break away from Washington's incremental battles and his own small-scale executive actions. He offered a sweeping indictment of economic inequality and unleashed his own brand of prairie populism.

He spoke for nearly an hour to a supportive audience, reselling his ideas under the framework of "building a nation where we're all better off."

Billed as an important address that would put today's economic debates in context, Obama's speech seemed a bit like two packaged into one.

The first was that of the campaigner, full of loft and reclamation of American values. The second was the governing Obama, who recited his familiar jobs agenda, his feud with Congress over extending a Social Security tax cut, even his fight to get his consumer watchdog confirmed.

Obama tied himself to Roosevelt, the president and reformer who came to this town in eastern Kansas and called for a "square deal" for regular Americans. Roosevelt said then the fight for progress was a conflict "between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess."

It is a theme Obama is embracing in a mounting fight for re-election against Republicans who, regardless of the nominee, will attack his stewardship of the economy.

One of the leading contenders for the GOP nomination, Mitt Romney, ridiculed Obama for comparing himself to Roosevelt.

Obama "said that he is like Teddy Roosevelt," Romney said at a campaign event in Paradise Valley, Ariz. "And I thought, `In what way is he like Teddy Roosevelt?' Teddy Roosevelt of course founded the Bull Moose Party. One of those words applies."

Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said, "Maybe instead of trying to be like other presidents, Obama should try being president."

Obama took aim at the Republicans, saying they would only return the same structures that led to America's economic downturn. "Their philosophy is simple: We are better off when everyone is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules," Obama said. "I'm here to say they are wrong."

The president conceded that the country is in the midst of a consuming re-examination on his watch, prompting national movements against both government spending and an economy that many feel disproportionately favors the elite. Obama went on the offensive about income inequality, saying it distorts democracy and derails the American dream.

Responding to those who want to cut taxes and regulation in the belief success will trickle down, Obama said: "Here's the problem: It doesn't work. It's never worked."

Obama noted that Theodore Roosevelt was called a "radical, a socialist, even a communist" for putting forth ideas in his last campaign such as an eight-hour work day, a minimum wage for women, unemployment insurance and a progressive income tax.

Left unsaid: Roosevelt's Bull Moose campaign in 1912 failed to return him to the White House.

Obama attempted to sum up the pain and peril for a society where the middle class is struggling. But he also called for individual responsibility.

"In the end," he said, "rebuilding this economy based on fair play, a fair shot and a fair share will require all of us to see the stake we have in each other's success."

Obama also challenged the big banks that took bailouts from American taxpayers, pointing to "a deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street." He said banks that were bailed out had an obligation to work to close that trust deficit and should be doing more to help remedy past mortgage abuses and assist middle-class taxpayers.

I have no trust of the man, he lied about cannabis, he is escalating the war on drugs, he wants to put over 7 million more Americans in jail (The Federal Government's Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 12.7 million people who have used some illegal drug in the last month , Approximately 57 percent of current illicit drug users limit consumption exclusively to marijuana.) This is his policy, how could anyone vote for such a person is beyond me
04:19 PM on 12/21/2011
"12.7 million people who have used some illegal drug in the last month"

That's about how many people are unemployed in America today, isn't it?

You think the Republican menace, the ones who are strick on this subject would be any more lenient? I bet your parents want to vote for ol straight thinking Obama eh? You still want to live in their basement though, don't you? LOL

facts suck when they get in the way of an agenda. And I'm 50 years old, my parents passed a longtime ago, in Florida we have no basements, and in 35years i have not been unemployed or without a business of my own, no dole, support, feed, educate, provide insurance for my children without aid from the government...... Do you even have a point or do you just want to spout the party line ....go over the cliff lemming, just follow the crowd

He talks about a fair shot and a fair share for everybody. THINK about that? Where in the Constitution does it say that? It says Everyone is entitled to life, liberty. and the pursuit of happiness, not a fair share, A FAIR SHOT, the rest is up to the individual!!!!!!!

Outake from an admittedly snarky article:

Yet, after hymning the virtues of “better services and better prices,” the president went on to issue the latest brain-dead call for increased “investment” in education. America “invests” more per student than any other nation except Switzerland, and it has nothing to show for it other than a vast swamp of mediocrity presided over by a hideous educrat monopoly. Might this fetid maw not benefit from exposure to “better services and better prices”? Perish the thought!

It's snarky, but that's not to say its devoid of pertinent observations regarding the content of the presidentail address. The whole thing can be viewed here:

most of the bad we hear from the right wing about obama is at the very least twisted truths when not out right lies. im not a right winger and i certainly think obama has made mistakes as ALL previous presidents have but im thinking that the biggest mistake of all was him even trying to reason with the bullies of the gopbagger party. . NOW they have dropped the ball on his side of the field and he needs to run with it not fall on it. GOP has made themselves a laughing stock and all the lies and twisted truths will not save them on election day. THEY and THEY alone have declared class warfare but they forgot that the many can and will defeat the few. It has been done before and it will be done again. Watch ohio it will show you how people take back their government when it fails them.

Your middle school rant spouting warmed over talking points simply lacks enough substance to be taken seriously. Its too easy to dismiss out of hand anyone complaining about the specks in the eyes of others while ignoring the LOGS in their own.

Instead of whining like an Occupier making vague references to personal grievances, try focusing on one anti-GOP issue at a time. Include a link or two to credible, verifiable sources to substantiate your arguments and you might be taken seriously by more than just your "fans."

Until then, what you complain about isn't class warfare, its plain old BIGOTRY. And as a black man who has lived with it for 50 years, using it to justify confiscating legitimately earned wealth from people you know nothing about, and have never even met, on the basis of the size of their bank accounts, is just as disgusting as if it were based on the color of their skin. And lest you think it not relevant, just replace the word "blacks" with "1%ers", and the phrase "sexually forcing themselves upon white women" with "exploiting the 99%" in the following article and you'll see what I mean:

"PBS - The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow: The Birth of a Nation"
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/stories_events_birth.html

Progressives should be LAST to accuse ANYONE of class warfare/bigotry given their shameful and wicked history of using it to advance the paternalistic objectives driving their politics.

Like football don't you. Which team can carry the ball into the endzone eh? 2012 must be the game one team must have a majory rule or the game will be called for lack of interest. The world is getting sick of the huge waste of time called American banter in the Senate. Either the world gives up on Democracy or it runs with it. The decision will be made in the 2012 election. Whether or not America is up to the task or not depends on it's citizens. Never has so much depended on so few. 7 billion are watching.

It would be nice if the people who are responsible for DE-REGULATING everything for the rich 1%- would realize that the mass majority of the people in the United States are not wealthy. It's the greed of those 1% and the money that they pour into the campaigns of those who continue to vote and rally for things that no longer is acceptable. Lets stop thinking of how we can build other nations and BUILD our own. Lets stop exporting "jobs" to countries and giving corporations (the 1%) tax breaks....lets think about Americans for a change. Many Americans would give anything to get the jobs the 1% send to China and India. Screw them!!!!!!! How about we take care of our own for a change
10:26 PM on 12/12/2011

My God, what a lying, corrupt class-warfare monger this POTUS is!! To say that capitalism/free markets have not worked and never have, shows his true colors as a socialist/marxist! He wouldn't know if it works since he has never worked in the private sector. He is a career public employee. This country has accomplished more in less than 300 years than many countries have in 3000. The working poor/poverty level citizens enjoy far more of the basics and luxuries than do 2/3's of the rest of the world. We take for granted something as simple as clean running water and electricity, while many parts of the world have neither!! Private enterprise and competition have developed everything from weed-eaters to the i-pad, not the gov't. Despite WM's reputation, they have provided low cost luxuries for the low income workers that they would never have been able to afford. The only lines we have in this country are those waiting to by the latest i-pads! This man's worthless communist father offered little to no help for his son both financially or mentally; while his mother was a traveling communist assigning her son's care to her white grandparents. Then Obama questions his white half while revealing in his black heritage - good be proud of your heritage!! But, where was his black father and black grand parents to support him as a young boy??

Interestingly, if the government had not provided for rural electrification, highway building, and environmental protection, many Americans wouldn't have any of the things you mention. Pure capitalism is like a forest fire - it burns everything in its way, and leaves nothing for anyone else. Not air, or water, or money.
04:50 PM on 12/09/2011
The gov't did not invent electricity, or invent the car, heavy machinery or much of naything else! It is run away govt that burns everything in sight. The gov't derives its money from the producers. All they know how to produce money is to print it!!
04:56 PM on 12/09/2011
Steve, let's face it!! Your are driven by the need for the gov't to make for a level playing field. It doesn't matter to liberals how the have nots got to this point, but instead of holding them also accountable, liberals want to punish the producers and those that work in the name of fairness. This is no fairness in that!!

His speech is an awesome LIE!! Check out the facts between capitalism/free market vs. socialism and communism. When's the last time you stood in line for the basic foods? Been assigned a ration card? Limited on the amount of beef, chicken, pork that you could buy with your ration card, plus being at the end of the line and received none of these luxuries? Had to live with your parents for years, since no housing was available for young, single people? We are so ignorant and spoiled as to what we take for granted and what 2/3's of the rest of the world has to do just to obtain clean, running water. Do some research!! Many of us Americans would not be "standing" at all if we had to endure what many on this planet have to under other forms of gov't.
02:43 PM on 12/09/2011
Actually, almost all of the great abundance we enjoy came about AFTER world war II, when government helped shape the economy and tamed the capitalist robber barons.

The US quite literally taxed itself into prosperity. If the conservatives have their way, clean drinking water, and abundant food will be history.

Do some research on the abuse, fraud and waste involved with medicare, social security, food stamps, unemployment, social programs for illegal aliens. How about $113M/LY for illegal aliens? Over $90B in fraud and overpayments with Medicare? All stolen by "will nots" from the hard working "haves" and liberals could care less. Quit looking for just "green" jobs and look for a job!!

How about the "hard working" haves who raid corporations who employ millions of "will nots" and shut them down, take the pension funds they have saved up for decades, move the jobs overseas, and pocket the difference.

You have a very weird idea of hard work. Apparently anything that enriches you is hard work, and if you work 80 hours a week and don't get paid enough, you are lazy. Interesting approach. How do you feel about bank robbers?

I'll give the President the benefit of the doubt. What is his plan? Until he decouples himself from the banks and his pro-China policy, how can Americans get a fair shake. The middle-class is downwardly mobile. To make things fair, then we need to stop exporting our jobs, we need to stop requiring the middle-class to lower their wages to compete with $3 an hour. We need to create jobs in America in new factories to produce things we import. We need an advanced space program that will create jobs in a new market. We need a new education system that educates not medicates. When the President starts giving details on how he is going to accomplish this, then he will get my vote. Until then, I want your vote to hold his feet to the fire.

China is not the problem. China has way more problems than most people in the US can ever imagine. They're doing what they feel they need to deal with it. The US and China are engaged in a dance, but so is the rest of the globalised world. The jobs that are gone aren't what we should want back, and they will not come back anyway. As hard as it is, what Obama said about what happened when we went from an agrarian society to an industrial one is the kind of transition we're facing now. What we import is a lot of junk from China and while I'd argue that has benefitted the US as much as it benefitted China, I don't think you really want to go in the direction of what the Chinese workers are going through right now (we already went through that). High end manufacturing is one option. Perhaps rethinking what it means to work is another.

I agree that we need a better education system. I think we have a decent one, somewhat degraded in the last 10 years, but still can be substantially improved. I agree with you about an advanced space program. I think we really should invest in retooling our coastal cities that will have to deal with rising waters (look at what happened in Thailand this year, this is because Bangkok is sinking and I think we're going to be looking at that in some of our prime real estate).

You have some good points Ram but we need a large enough base to encourage students to study engineering or consider manufacturing. We still need to employ x% of our people in manufacturing. An economy that is soley based on service does not have a way to export products to help its economy when there is a downturn. China is a problem because it is matching the dollar as it depreciates preventing the US from exporting more. I am not specifically talking about sneakers but computers, electronics, etc.

I'm 48 and school was far more difficult for me than my children. Students today graduate with the equivalent of my 8th grade education. We will need to send kids to college for 5 years so they have one year to catch up with better students. 40 - 50% of inner-city students fail, that is unacceptable. If GM made cars with a 50% failure rate, what would people do?

I want to build 5 major high-density urban centers inland modeled after Singapore and Shanghai to begin the process of migration. We will add 100 million people to the US population over the next 40 years. We will need places for everybody inland. It is too expensive to move the land to the coast, cheaper to move the people.
