Reddit Raises More Than $31,000 In Hours For Lucas Gonzalez, Boy With Rare Immune Disorder (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 12/06/11 06:29 PM ET Updated: 12/06/11 06:35 PM ET

Days after publishing a post on Reddit, the Gonzalez family has received more than $31,000 in contributions from the site's readers to go toward son Lucas' bone marrow transplant.

The 3-year-old boy suffers from Hyper IgM Syndrome, a rare immunodeficiency disorder that makes him more susceptible to infections and puts him at an early risk of death.

Dr. Suhag H. Parikh of Duke University, recommended Lucas undergo a bone marrow transplant to overcome the risks associated with the disorder.

In order for Lucas to receive the procedure, the Gonzalez family has to relocate from Florida to North Carolina, where the hospital is located. According to the post, a financial adviser estimated six-months worth of living expenses, insurance costs and medical bills would run the family about $50,000.

Lucas' aunt's boyfriend took to Reddit with the boy's story. He posted an image gallery under the username ironyx, and explained the family's circumstances.

Within hours, the Internet community had donated at least $31,000.

Although ironyx included a letter from the doctor verifying Lucas' condition and recommending treatment, one user decided to verify the story for himself and spoke to the doctor on Duke's campus. Sure enough, the story checked out.

As an expression of gratitude Luis Gonzalez, Lucas' father, has vowed to get a Reddit tattoo. In a recent post, Gonzalez said he had decided on "the Reddit robot with a heart on his chest."

As of Dec. 6, the family had raised $55,038, according to their website, loveforlucas.com.

This isn't the first time Reddit users have banded together to raise money for a cause, MSNBC reports.

Earlier this year, the community helped raise more than $30,000 for Doctors Without Borders, and in 2010, Reddit users donated about $185,000 toward recovery efforts after the Haiti earthquake.

Some day, in a bright future, we may have bake sales to raise money for Dept. of Defense...instead of real and virtual bake sales to keep kids alive.

NO ONE should have to go through this just to stay alive.

Health care for ALL.

What drives me crazy, is that the Child needed a fundraiser to get medical treatment, except for Republicans of Course.

And Teapublicans hate Obamacare. Figures anyone who isn't an ultra-rich conservarat isn't worth saving according to their philosophy. You would think their being so hateful would eat their souls out but they wallow in ignorance and arrogance.

Why isn't health care included as a human right in the USA, it is a developed country, right?

I'm shocked that $$$ is still associated with health care delivery in a developed country.

Why did the USA choose a mismatched 'for profit, insurance, business model' to deliver health care in the 1960's? Why?

It's a business model that fails at matching the product to be delivered (denies payments, builds in lead time to delay payments, drops patients in need of care, profits off of inhumame treatment, deliberately builds admin layers to complicate and confuse health care process, etc)...AND the country keeps using this "worst case business model matchup in the history of health care delivery in developed countries".

HELLO, pick a business model that delivers heath care already, look around, every other developed country in the world has a model that works, pick the best of what they offer and get out of using the mismatched fire insurance business model for health care already.

This desperate need to raise money for health care is not necessary in any other developed country in the world!

Doesn't Duke have a Ronald McDonald House or a similar place for the parents of very ill children to live? If not, that would be a worthwhile endeavor. I used to work at the beautiful David's House at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital, a home away from home for families just like Lucas'.

there are only so many rooms in a Ronald McDonald House.

This is what sickens me about America: That parents have to beg strangers for money to save their child's life--and most people are okay with that.

Wishing you good health and a long life Lucas!

This is another of countless examples of why we need universal healthcare in America. It is wrong that the weathiest nation in the world still kills 45,000 of its citizens every year because they don't have health insurance. Health care is a right not a privilidge.

You didn't read the article. They DO have health insurance, but they have to leave their jobs and move, so they can't afford to pay the bills and the expenses during recovery.

A bone marrow transplant and its subsequent recovery would cost significantly more than $50,000.

Health care for profit is an abomination. We have so much yet so few receive it.

don't forget that SOPA or PROTECTIP would surely shut sited like reddit down.

Great news and hope for all the best to Lucas and the family.

Yet another story for health care as a basic human right.
We keep fighting and we will get there.

ironic that you say that when the two groups that raised the most money for him were r/atheism and r/trees (weed smokers)
