Oprah To Dr. Oz: 'Running A Network Is Challenging' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   Katherine Fung First Posted: 12/07/11 01:11 PM ET Updated: 12/08/11 07:59 AM ET

Oprah discussed the challenges of running her own network in her debut appearance on "Dr. Oz" on Wednesday.

"Let me tell you running a network is challenging," Oprah told Dr. Oz. "Can y'all please find it on your channels?" It is a familiar tune for Oprah, who previously admitted that running OWN was a lot harder than she had imagined.

Despite lukewarm ratings, however, Oprah has remained steadfast about seeing her network succeed. On Wednesday, she said, "You have to be committed because, you know, I signed a deal. I'm going to do it." She also said that she does not miss doing her old show everyday, though she does miss the audience.

She teased her newest show "Oprah's Next Chapter," which features her talking to public figures and other interesting people outside of the studio. In one episode, Oprah meets a Hasidic Jewish family that has never heard of her before.

Oprah was also on Dr. Oz to unveil a huge milestone for O magazine: the January cover featuring Oprah and Dr. Oz together (see below). He is the magazine's first "cover boy," as Oprah put it.

The talk show host and Oprah protege is just the fourth person to share the cover with the former queen of daytime. That honor has also been bestowed upon Michelle Obama, Ellen Degeneres and Rosie O'Donnell. Oprah told People magazine that she chose to feature Dr. Oz because "the January issue is all about firsts."

Their interview in O magazine also contained some juicy tidbits. Oprah told him that she read his wife Lisa's book and learned "that y'all have a very hot sex life!" (which Dr. Oz seemed to acknowledge). She also called him "the leader of all the talk shows" and advised him to create balance in his life -- something she said she hasn't done. When asked why, she answered, "Because the show became the great love of my life -- not just the mistress. It filled everything. With each year, as you’ll see, you have to keep raising the bar."

Below, see the four times Oprah has shared the cover of her magazine, including her latest cover with Dr. Oz.

Oprah, just please get out of your pulpit. NO more of "your life sucks and I have the answers" television. Please, just please go away

I admire Oprah. I even placed her on my FB page as an admired person - and then removed her. When her website was flooded with requests that she consider taking on the cancelled "continuing dramas" (soaps) which included other shows besides AMC & OLTL, she provided a textbook, inaccurate reply that no one is interested in continuing drama. She did not do the research and relied on her programming Chief, (that she since fired) for her response which was inaccute and condescending. Even many media critics stated that it was a good idea and would bring a million or more viewers to her channel. This is one reason that many of her ex-fans do not watch her channel. Also that big blow out, final farewell show of hers was a bit over the top, since she is still in media.

Oprah and other celebrities always make a big deal media-wise donating and doing big things in OTHER COUNTRIES, but they do not provide what they donate and do (and its their right not to) in this country where you have millions of people out of work, seniors who need resources and help, homeless families, homeless veterans, etc. I have since provided my loyalty and donations to celebrities who spearhead charities IN THIS COUNTRY, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Salvation Army, First ladies Obama and Biden on the Veterans' Family charities, Food for Friends, and AARP among others.

That Lisa ling show is the only good show on OWN. Everything else is "leftovers" from other networks.

Oprah has done so much for millions. She is arguably one of the most inspirational people on the planet. Hasn't found that balance? Join the crowd? Made a commitment and will see it through. Doesn't sound to me like she's sorry, sounds like she's challenged. I'm a huge fan and have benefitted by her messages of hope and compassion. I don't see that changing.

Yes - all you have to do is WANT it badly enough. If you're not getting it, it's your own fault because you don't want it enough.

Every time i look at the menu, it seems a string of one show or another is airing, with lots of repeats (most of which are shows i'm not even remotely interested in - Sweetie Pie's? Really?). Also, the OnDemand menu has pitifully limited offerings, so it's impossible to review the overall line up unless you sit and wait for original content on the channel itself. It doesn't seem like a well managed network.

Pick up One Life To Live and All My Children and reconfigure them, then get rid of so many talk shows.

bbbbut talk shows are GOOD for you - this is a network that is all about what is good for you not about what entertains - that you can get on any old network not run by an inspirational guru with A list friends.

Exactly! I had the same idea. There is not much going for the network. And a talk show network is just nuts.

I was reading this Huffington Post article about Ms. Winfrey's appearance on Dr. Oz's show where she talking about how challenging it was to start a network. Yet what she was quoted as saying next to Dr. Oz surprised me.

"You have to be committed because, you know, I signed a deal. I'm going to do it," she said.

Now does that sound like "live your best life, follow your dream, seek your passion" Oprah that we all know? Not to me. It sounds like someone who's stuck in a gig that they now regret.

I see that too. There is much to be said for going out with dignity. She must think she is the best thing since sweet potato pie-- I think people have had enough of Oprah. Her network sucks. I have never watched anything on that network because it is all I have seen before. OPRAH--go away and play with Gayle.

I watched this interview with interest. I like Dr Oz. I am tired of Oprah and her self-aggrandizing behaviour. The "perfect" Oprah took an opportunity to take a very cheap shot at Anderson Cooper and his new talk show during her interview with Dr Oz. Oprah made a snide comment that her show is not about eating broccoli and spinach. Anderson Cooper has had a couple of shows about his picky eating habits which have shown him tasting these broccoli & spinach. The OWN is not doing as well as Oprah expected so she is trashing her competition? So...live your best life only until it affects your bottom line then attack!

True story. This interview was playing on the tv over my dentists chair while I was getting a root canal. I had to stop the procedure, pull the cotton out, and beg the assistant to turn it off. I offered to sit for a second root canal if that is what it took to leave the screen blank. Once her grating self-congratulatory stream of preening faux populism boast-speak was gone, the pain subsided by 30%. True story.
