Patton Oswalt Calls Bachmann 'Mean Girl,' Blasts Santorum's Homophobia On Olbermann (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/07/11 09:37 AM ET Updated: 12/07/11 09:37 AM ET

Patton Oswalt went on "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" Tuesday night to promote his new movie "Young Adult," and while there, tried to wrap his head around Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum's baffling attitudes toward gays.

First, he tackled the recent viral video of Bachmann being confronted by a child, who told the Republican presidential contender "my mommy's gay but she doesn't need fixing" at a book signing. Oswalt pointed out that although many believe the kid was coerced by the mother to say that, Bachmann entirely missed the point of the exchange by glaring at the mother instead of responding.

"What if he was coached by the mom? It's still a completely valid point, and why didn't she answer it? ... Why would anyone roll their eyes at a little kid? That's the creepiest 'mean girl,' bully behavior you could possibly do."

Next, Oswalt went after Rick Santorum, who has made "traditional marriage" a key campaign issue. Particularly, Oswalt finds it odd that Santorum uses the Bible as an excuse to legitimize his crusade against gay rights.

"It's almost like he's saying, 'I would love to be tolerant of gays, but it's that darn book! Every morning I wake up and am like, let me get out there and get at those gays and be tolerant! Oh, Jesus! Romans 1:27, you got me again!"

He finishes by speculating on Santorum's obsession with gay sex, which he believes is "all he talks about," to the point where being really into "family values" may be a new subtle lifestyle signifier.

Oswalt's film "Young Adult," starring Charlize Theron and directed by Jason Reitman, opens nationwide this Friday.

While I do find Patton funny, calling Bachmann a mean girl trivializes her complete lack of empathy for other people.

For me, it's not even about the issue.....Imagine how easily Bachmann could've responded in any number of "safe" ways. She might've said something that at least respected the child without endorsing gays, or just thanked the mother-son "family" for attending. But no....she's paralyzed when faced with people or issues she can't understand and simply doesn't feel the incident deserves a response, much less an honest one. What kind of fear leaves a candidate speechless when faced with a bashful 8 year old and his mother? Handling these situations gracefully isn't the mark of a Washington "insider", it's a basic leadership skill.

Can someone please tell me why conservatives can't accept gay marriage, how does two guys marrying effect them, how?
11:58 AM on 12/08/2011
Pat does have a point even if the mother put the kid up to it, he's an 8 year old. How can she not answer an 8 year old's question? And another thing, gay marriage shouldn't even be questioned, if someone is gay that's their own business. If someone wants to marry the same sex then fine, we shouldn't say no to gay's because all it is gonna do is start trouble as already shown. Gays are people and they should be given the same right to marry as any one else. PERIOD!

Bachmann 'glared at the mother' because the mother tucked tail and ran after the kid was forced into saying whatever he said. It's fine to hate Bachmann, but reserve a little disgust for that pathetic excuse of a mother.

Huh? First, you are assuming the mom put the kid up to it, you don't know that for a fact. Second, Bachmann could not respond to a question from an 8 year old, it doesn't matter who prompted the kid to ask the question, a presidential candidate should be able to respond to any question from an 8 year old. That's pathetic.

Why is it that when a person who is against the GBLT movement gets his or her head cut off like it is the French Revelotion all over again. Yet we have to give the GBLT their fair time. Hurrah for Michele. Its a gutsy thing these days to say whats on your mind. OH yes I am a conservative Christian and yes I am taught to love everyone but on the other hand YOU CAN'T WALK ALL OVER ME. So if the GBLT want to have the platform GUESS WHAT I want to be able to say what is on my mind. God Bless us all.

You think its gutsy to be a bigot? That's a whole new level of hypocrisy, even for Republicans.

Saying what's on your mind in a pleasant way, even while disagreeing, is kind of a pre-requisite for being a successful politician on a national stage. A speechless, frozen glare, on the other hand, does not speak well for her capacity to thrive on a national and international level.

Michelle Bachmann claims she has "never made a gaff" so we must all assume that she is as spiteful, clueless, i.gnorant, and pathologically insane as she appears....Ricky Santorum is just a closet case or as the "good Catholic" he claims to be --- he might have been traumatized by a priest...just saying

I can't stand Bachman...she's an imposter...a lame brain...and outright liar.....but she did nothing wrong...and the people defending this action of using children...are wrong...and will always be wrong...

I am an unrepentant breeder, and am sick of the non stop gayness. Ok , you're gay. Wanna get married, I'm cool with that. Good, go be be gay, but respect the fact that people find the lifestyle, and sex gross.

Actually we do respect the fact the people find the lifestyle ( which is a misnomer ) and sex gross.....( we kinda find straight sex gross ... for us ).....

The problem is that YOUR FEELINGs.... that we So Willfully    MUSTRespect.... has a tendency of not RESPECTING US BACK..........

On
How we Love
How we Make Love

Should not require your Seal of Approval......
Or YOUR VOTE

Especially because you find it so GROSS
unless you want us to feel the same way about ourselves that you find so Gross.....

Knowing now of Michele Bachmann's love of money it wouldn't surprise me if she had children just to make a buck
She certainly proves it by taking in 23 foster children at a $433 month stake per child

I hope Patton becomes a breakout star after working for so many years like Zach Galifianakis did with The Hangover.
