Republican Jewish Coalition Forum: GOP Presidential Candidates Lambaste Obama On Israel

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential hopefuls took turns lambasting President Barack Obama's policy toward Israel on Wednesday, accusing him of being timid in the face of Iran's attempt to build nuclear weapons and allowing a dangerous distance to develop between the U.S. and its long-time ally in the Middle East.

"This president, for every thug and hooligan, for every radical Islamist, he has had nothing but appeasement," said former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania in one of harshest criticisms on a day filled with them.

In speeches that resembled political auditions before Jewish activists and donors, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Michele Bachmann promised to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and Texas Gov. Rick Perry pledged he would increase military aid to Israel.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a co-front-runner in the polls with Gingrich, said that the president, by his actions, has "emboldened Palestinian hard-liners who now are poised to form a unity government with terrorist Hamas and feel they can bypass Israel at the bargaining table."

Recent controversial remarks about anti-Semitism by Howard Gutman, the U.S., ambassador to Belgium, also figured in the assault on the administration by Republicans seeking the right to oppose Obama in next year's elections.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who was Obama's first envoy to China, suggested the remarks had been cleared in advance by the State Department or perhaps even the White House.

All of the Republicans stressed that Iran must never be permitted to gain a nuclear weapon, raising the possibility of a pre-emptive military strike to prevent it. Israel regards the prospect of a nuclear Iran as a threat to its own existence.

Any criticism of Obama drew applause from the audience, and the White House and its allies were quick to counter the allegations.

"Because they know they can't attract Jewish voters with their domestic policy, Republicans turn to Israel and attempt to make the Jewish state a partisan issue," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida Democrat who is chair of the Democratic National Committee.

She said Obama has demonstrated unwavering support for Israel, and during his presidency, U.S. military assistance has reached unprecedented levels.

Mindful of the political stakes, the White House has arranged briefings and a Hanukkah party at the White House for Jewish leaders on Thursday. Obama is expected to speak next week to a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism.

The maneuvering nearly a full year in advance of the presidential election reflects not only the importance of Jewish voters in the political base of any Democratic president, but also the traditionally outsized importance of their financial contributions for any White House hopeful of either major political party.

Jews accounted for a mere 2 percent of the electorate in 2008, and Election Day polling showed Obama drew the support of 78 percent of them. More recently polling by the Gallup organization has placed his approval among Jews at 51 percent.

Given those polling statistics, the eventual Republican presidential contender is highly unlikely to capture a majority of the Jewish vote in 2012. The party's often unspoken, more modest goal is to hold down the level of the president's support in hopes of swinging the outcome in one or more states likely to be most competitive.

Against that backdrop, there was little political percentage in holding back, and the Republicans who took a turn on Wednesday's stage didn't.

Huntsman, Obama's first envoy to China, suggested that Ambassador Gutman's comments about anti-Semitism reflected "ambiguity that the administration has toward Israel."

"I say these aren't speeches that are cooked up at local level within the embassy. They go high up within the State Department, probably within the National Security Council," he said.

In reply to a question, he said he was less concerned about demanding the ambassador's resignation, as other GOP hopefuls have done, than in finding out who had vetted the remarks.

In a speech earlier this month, Gutman identified two types of anti-Semitism, a traditional kind that he said must be combatted, and a newer strain in Europe that results from "tension, hatred and sometimes even violence between some members of Muslim communities or Arab immigrant groups and Jews ... largely born of and reflecting the tension between Israel, the Palestinian territories and neighboring Arab states in the Middle East over the continuing Israeli-Palestinian problem.

"It, too, is a serious problem. It, too, must be discussed and solutions explored," he added.

Gingrich, who has risen dramatically in public opinion polls in recent weeks, drew repeated applause when he said he would move the embassy, make Bush administration diplomat John Bolton his secretary of state and ridiculed Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the entire State Department.

"The fact that ... Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton would talk about discrimination against women in Israel and then meets with the Saudis, ..." he said, his voice trailing off as laughter erupted in the hall.

Women have far fewer rights than men under Saudi law.

Romney said that "in his inaugural address to the United Nations, the president chastised Israel but said little about the thousands of Hamas rockets raining into its skies. He's publicly proposed that Israel adopt indefensible borders."

Obama has `insulted its prime minister, Bibi Netanyahu, and he's been timid and weak in the face of the existential threat of a nuclear Iran," added Romney. He repeated a pledge to make his first foreign trip as president to Israel.

Good to know that just one man, Ron Paul, is running for President of the United States, and to prove the point, he was not invited.

The rest of the field may not know that Israel will indict, try, convict and jail its president for past behavior. They should check their closets closely.

I wonder, are people here aware that Ron Paul was banned from this debate because he would actually have something to debate about with the other candidates, in that he would not be in line to kiss a rear quarters of the hard line Israeli right?.

And remember, Paul is EXTREMELY popular with the tea Party and many other Republicans, so clearly, this entire thing was a political whitewash rather than a debate.

Imagine if these buffoons actually had to defend their views on Israel against someone who actually knew what they were talking about and was not afraid to say it? They would have all just sat there like deer in the headlights.

These debates are just public displays of stupidity, views of the underbelly of ambition, an orchestrated national implosion! “Loose lips sink ships” remember that; now add “disseminated duplicity demolishes diplomatic ties”. This reporting of Republican statements, if accurate, suggests that they might have been consumed with Obama envy weeks ago when Netanyahu said “ Obama’s action to block the Palestinian statehood bid was a "badge of honor" after President Obama’s UN stance saying "The bonds between the U.S. and Israel are unbreakable," Obama said. "Peace cannot be imposed on the parties. It’s going to have to be negotiated. ... The ultimate goal of all of us is two states side by side, living in peace." as reported in September by most media sources including the right-wing noise machine Politico. To propagate this insanity, as report here, is evidence that none of these GOP hopefuls are capable of handling foreign policy. Don’t be duped by the infamous sound bite or personally motivated urge to misrepresent!

Huh? This group is loyal to no one or nothing but themselves. They spew whatever nonsensical sound bites will attract whomsoever they believe it most influential in getting them votes. As Sarah Palin proves in the last round, they have little understanding of foreign policy or what is happening in the rest of the world. I wouldn't put Israel's fate in any of their hands.

This administration has killed more Al Qaeda leaders than the previous administration. They stood by Israel at the UN against the bid for Palestinian state recognition and got Germany, France and the UK to go along. The posturing among the goper candidates for money and votes alone is a dangerous game. It also makes them look like the fools that they are.

obama HAS shown his distain for Israel - for him to claim that he has done ' more ' for Israel than any other admin, is an out and out lie -
We must aid and defend Israel - we must -
Israel has the right to exist - to defend herself - to SIMPLY be -
And obama has no right to treat her as he does.

*We* must aid and defend Israel? Last time I checked Israel was a foreign country. We have 0 obligation to them. And it doesn't take some raving antisemite to see their negative effects on American foreign policy.

These candidates have no problem critizing the ambassador to Belgium for his remark which in reality isnt even antisemitic yet they go on national television being racist toward Latinos and mind you a much larger voting block. It is also a disgrace that these politicians both on the right and left have dual allegiance if they love Israel so bad well maybe they should go live there.

Look at the number of anti-Israel posts here vs. pro-Israel posts. Many, many more against Israel. In fact, probably only 2% of the posts here are pro-Israel. But here it the interesting thing, the anti-Israel posts are also anti-Republican and anti-Democrat. Obama and Democrats say that they are a great friends and supporters of Israel. The Republicans claim that they are. Yet most of the posts here are are anti-anyone that supports Israel. At a time when there is such divisiveness in the US between the political parties, support for Israel may be the one thing that brings them together. And yet, 98% of the posts here would like to drive a wedge even here.

It's not the people of Israel that Americans are upset with, it's the government! The government thinks that they can do whatever they want and be answerable to nobodyl. They build "illegal settlements" while villifying the palestinians, they used white phosphorus rounds in a civilian areas, the body count of palestinians as opposed to Israelis is unbelievable. They don't think that the rules of civilized nations apply to them and actually thumb their noses at the International community. You might as well have Dick Cheney running the country.

Look at the posts. Most are not critical of just the current Israeli govt. They are critical of Israel going back to multiple administrations, even when Labor was in power. I am critical of many policies of the Netanyahu govt but still support Israel. But claiming that US support for Israel is due to Jews having too much wealth and influence, especially considering thier size of the population is, at best, anti-democratic and at worst anti-Semitic. Suppose Jews controll 10% of the wealth of the US and yet represent only 2% of the population. Applying the thinking of some of these people who post, 80% of their wealth should be taken away from them simply because they are Jews in order for them to then have the same proportional influence as everyone else. Yet, 90% of the wealth still rests in the hands of the other 98% of the population. Yet, they still can't over come the influence of the 2%. Really?
07:46 AM on 12/08/2011
One can support the existence of the State of Israel and still be critical of the policies of Netanyahu and his political party, Likud. The anti-Israel nonsense here is closer to the positions of Hamas and the current regime in Iran than to the regimes in most of the Arab world, including Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League, all of whom recognize the State of Israel.

When people like Romney accuse President Obama of "appeasement", as he did yesterday, it is disgusting, short-sighted and counterproductive to achieving peace.
