Children Of Immigrants Ask For Halt To Deportation That Splits Families

Children Holiday Wish

First Posted: 12/09/11 08:05 AM ET Updated: 12/09/11 12:01 PM ET

Some children didn't write to Santa with their most heartfelt wish this holiday season. Instead, more than 5,000 sent letters to the nation's political leaders, asking them to stop a wave of deportations that is tearing immigrant families apart.

On Thursday, dozens of children brought the letters to President Barack Obama and Congress as part of the "A Wish for the Holidays" campaign, organized by the coalition We Belong Together.

Letters were hand delivered to the offices of 54 members of Congress, including 27 members who are supporters of immigrant rights to thank them and encourage them to do more. Other letters went to lawmakers -- including Rep. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Rep. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) -- whose views they hoped to change. The children were only able to see Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), who welcomed them personally.

At a press conference in the Cannon House Office Building, nine of the letters were read out loud. One of the most compelling was written by Izamar, an 18-year-old girl from Chicago who has lived in the U.S. since she was 5. Her father is facing a deportation proceeding, she wrote. If he is sent back to Mexico, he will leave behind Izamar, her mother and her older brother, who suffers from quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Because the father is the main breadwinner, Izamar wrote, the family will either suffer great financial hardship without him or also be forced to return to Mexico, where it will be almost impossible to obtain the medical care her brother needs.

"It was very powerful to hear these children speak on how the deportations are affecting them, preventing them from eating and concentrating in school," said Lisa More, a coordinator with the National Domestic Workers Alliance, one of the main sponsors of We Belong Together. She described the event as a "real tearjerker."

Between January and June 2011, the U.S. deported more than 46,000 parents of U.S. citizen children. As a result of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions and deportations, more than 5,000 children are in foster care around the country, according to a study, "Shattered Families," by the Applied Research Center.

"Separating families is wrong," said Miriam Yeung, executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, another We Belong Together sponsor. "Immigrants are afraid to walk to the hospital, women in domestic violence situations are afraid to call the cops, and children are in fear of losing their parents."

In addition to the children, representatives from We Belong Together sponsors -- the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, MADRE, First Focus and other national and local community groups -- visited the offices of elected officials who have taken an anti-immigrant stance.

To launch the "A Wish for the Holidays" campaign, We Belong Together had called for letters to be written by children with family members at risk of deportation and others who could "imagine the impact of family separation on their friends and schoolmates." Andrea Frank, a sixth-grade teacher in New York City, was one of those who responded to the call. On Thursday, she was in Washington with the children to deliver their letters.

"I got involved in the campaign," said Frank, "because I thought it was important for my students, especially those that have immigrant parents." She said she had talked to her students about what an immigrant is and why someone would come to the U.S. She discussed immigration laws and the impact they were having on families.

"Children feel strongly about these letters because they cannot vote," she said.

The "Shattered Families" report found that children separated from their families by deportation face enormous obstacles in rejoining their parents, even though child welfare agencies are required by federal law to reunify children with parents who are able to care for them. Because child welfare authorities often lack formal policies for dealing with deported parents, the report says, children fall through the cracks.

Better policies could help. "The bottom line is that immigration laws can be enforced in a way that parents can make decisions the minute they are apprehended," said Wendy Cervantes, vice president of immigration and child rights policy at First Focus. "If that needs to happen, there are steps that can be taken for parents and children to stay together."

After one or both parents are deported, the "Shattered Families" researchers found, families typically remain apart for long periods, with child welfare agencies and juvenile courts often moving to terminate parental rights. Children who don't have other close relatives are even put up for adoption, HuffPost reported.

The "Shattered Families" study estimated that without changes to the government's deportation policy, 15,000 more minors will suffer the same fate over the next five years.

Due to President Obama's administration, over 46, 000 mothers and fathers of at least one U.S. citizen were part of massive ICE deportations in 2011.
Please sign a petition on Change.org to help reunite our familias. The signature goal is 48,486 – one signature for each parent that was deported by ICE officials at the beginning of 2011.

I get do tired of being called a fringing or racist just because I believe in closed borders.
I called and reported four illegals and the company that hired them today.
I did that because they're taking American jobs (they were painting and doing handyman work).
I also did it because of their blatantly racist attitudes towards many of us in online forums.
I have even started building a webiste to encourage others to do the same.
I usually live and work in Mexico and my wife had to wait in line but they don't?
I gulped I break up five million illegal families because that will go far in teaching them.
Learn to speak their language, befriend them, gain their trust, and if they're found to be illegal, report them and their employers to local police, ICE, and the IRS.
Hunt them with the law so they get no rest, no peace, and gave to hide under a rock instead of marching publically telling us how they have a right to our jobs, tax dollars, and political say.
Hunt them. Drive them from us.

Lets examine that statement - Izamar was brought here when she was 5. That's 13 years ago. Its doesnt say how much older her older brother is, lets assume 20. So these people sneak across our border with 2 young kids in tow, one of whom has cerebral palsy with the express intent of the US to take care of them. The father is the 'main breadwinner' So who has been paying the medical care for this person? Who has been educating Izamar for the last 13 years? The US taxpayer. In 13 years you cant manage to file the paperwork and go through the system to become legal??? Why are we only deporting the father? The whole family is here illegally!

"There are many shattered American families of people who have gone to prison, why should we feel sorry for illegal aliens, they have their own country. "

First of this isn't argument its a justification for your prejudice. This is a false analogy. Them having their own country has nothing to do with having sympathy for a fellow human. You should feel sorry for the families who suffer regardless of their identity, because their human, like you an me. Its like the three hikers imprisoned in Iran a few years back. Its like the Iranians saying well who cares if they mistreat them, they are "spies" "violated our laws", and they have their own country. They probably did mistreat them and it wasn't all right, we thought they were cruel for it. it especially shouldn't be all right for AMERICANS to do the same

We go to other countries and tell them to be humane when we can't even do it ourselves. I'm not saying illegal immigration is ok. Is not and the law should be enforced but the solution shouldn't be dehumanizing...and if we really want change we shouldn't focus the whole punishment on the illegal immigrant but instead on the person supplying the illegal immigrant with resources to want to keep coming. You cut off the illegal resources, and they have no reason to come. A little bet of an oversimplification...it won't solve everything but it's definitely better than the way were solving or problems now that obviously aren't working. duh...America if it doesn't work the first time, try a different way!

"America if it doesn't work the first time, try a different way!"

You're right, the 1986 amnesty didn't work, now try enforcement. People think this family thing is just a loophole for illegal aliens, it's not. No one put a gun their heads and told them to cross the border and bring their kids with them. Even illegal aliens who have kids here. One day that will be shutdown too.

If you are not here legally you have no right to be here, man, woman or child.
08:29 PM on 03/27/2012
And actually your wrong about the gun thing, actually a lot undocumented immigrants in the late 80s and 90s especially from Central American countries like El Salvador and Guatemala were escaping civil wars where their were guns being not only pointed to their heads but their children's too. These civil wars were a result of a past of US CIA coups and US involvement and military and economic aid to repressive military regimes.

"To defeat the rebels, the US equipped and trained an army which kidnapped and disappeared more than 30,000 people, and carried out large-scale massacres of thousands of old people women and children. " taken from BBC news http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/1891145.stm

just few examples.

one movie about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6xwPYpdeAk

so yes someone did put a gun to their head, and like anyone would do they fleed, some went other Latin countries, but since they were also in the same situation, many fleed to the US.
08:29 PM on 03/27/2012
Yes your right the 1986 amnesty didn't work and i believed that it encouraged even more illegal migration. The problem wasn't the amnesty, it was granting amnesty when the problems with immigration were not fixed yet. Problems with the immigration system need to be fixed first.

And jus soli which is found in the 14th amendment of the US constitution is a rule that the citizenship of a child is determined by the place of its birth. So it is a rule of the land, sorry. ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/jus%20soli ).

Should we blame banks for having alot of money in them because it might make someone want to rob them? Should we blame electronics stores for having the newest high tech gadgets because someone is going to want to steal a few? Your argument that we lure the illegal aliens here makes about as much sense.
07:49 PM on 03/27/2012
this makes no sense...banks having money, somebody wanting to rob them???? what a false analogy. Can you back up your arguments with logical arguments please. These employers are hiring undocumented immigrants just like that, immigrants aren't putting a gun in their face saying hire me or i'll shoot. They are willingly employing them for cheap labor. A bank doesn't hand out their money, like these employers are hiring undocumented immigrants instead of American citizens. If anything a bank protects their money from thieves, and that is what these employers should be doing. Hiring American citizens, and not undocumented immigrants just because of their greed. It's more their fault for encouraging it.

Are you trying to tell me they don't have any fault in it???
05:57 PM on 02/17/2012
You guys should take a look at the shattered families report before you guys leave your offensive comments. Its not the fact their being deported its the fact that there kids are being taken from them, you uneducated ignorant people. Your no better than the illegal immigrants for having all the resources available to you in this wonderful country to educate yourself but instead of doing so, only resource to prejudice, stereotype and hostility to jump to hasty generalizations and spit out illogical arguments full of fallacy after fallacy of name calling, oversimplification, and post-hac. I dare you guys just take a look at the study just a glimpse. The problem is they don't allow for them to take their kids to their homeland with them. They never get to see their children again. Its a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the US was a leader in the UN to form. It goes not just against one article but against articles 5,6,12, and 16! 4 articles!!!! And the United States considers itself a leader in human rights????

I think what is offensive is my child has to fend for herself in school because the teachers are tied up assisting children of illegals rather than her. I find that very offensive.
08:37 PM on 03/26/2012
Are you underestimating the ability of your child? I went to school with many illegals too and it didn't affect me what so ever. As a matter of fact because of it i was able to learn how to write and read spanish just by listening. Now I'm set in the job future with not just the knowledge of one language but three because i was placed in that diversity...and even though i didn't get all the attention of the teachers or tutors or anything i still managed to make it to a 4 year university...so saying your daughter doesn't have a chance its an excuse and its like your calling her stupid for needing all the attention of teachers and not relying on self sufficiency. Maybe, like me, she'll have the chance of learning another language and will have a better looking resume when she's looking for a career.

Deportation doesn't have to separate families. There is no reason why an illegal alien can't take their family home with them.
08:48 PM on 03/26/2012
Did you not read the report...the problem is the government isn't letting the parents take their children with them. Once they get deported the child protection services try file to take custody from the parents and puts them in foster care, because they believe the child will be better of in the US. That is the problem that they need to let the parents take their children with them, not separate them by trying to make them stay here.

Note that it does not state anywhere in the article that any member of the highlighted family is a US citizen. It does state that the girl came to the US when she was 5 and that her brother is older (so presumably, they were not born here). The logical and legal solution is obvious.

Had the rich and wealthy created the jobs that they were intended to create with their 70% tax cuts these last 30 years, jobs would be aplenty, and the Americans would not listen to the Republicans scaring them that new immigrants would take their jobs...it is not the immigrants, who work mostly in backbreaking agricultural jobs that pay corn cobs, no, I believe I have never heard anyone telling me that they got laid off from their apple picking job so they are hoping to find work in the south picking oranges, sounds funny, but I have never heard any such thing, but I have spoken with the workers on a cruise ship (short cruise Daytona to the Bahamas) and these workers are mostly Central Americans and the cruise ships hail from across the seas so they are not subject to our American minimum wage, but for the tips do they work and bring that money home every couple of months that their family may have a better life, a real home not one made out of cardboard, money for a doctor when needed, good food, that their children need not beg or turn tricks with tourists. And they work hard, don't take long cigarette breaks and are loyal. So what were you complaining about these immigrants that you must run them out of the country???
10:03 AM on 01/12/2012
Cruise ships? First of all, they are NOT "immigrants". The people that are invading the united states are Illegal Immigrants. I am a construction worker with many years experience. I watched as more and more contracters started hiring illegal immigrants. The kept just enough of the legal citizen journeyman on the job site so the illegals would learn our trades. I eventually got layed off like all the other legal citizens. Now days, when i go to any job site to ask for a job, the job sites are full of nothing but illegal aliens. The illegals refuse to hire white or black US citizens on their job sites and you wonder what people are complaining about? Im complaining that the illegals are undercutting US citizens and stealing our jobs and that i have to now collect food stamps to feed my family. Im complaining that the illegals have NO right to be in our country and stealing our jobs. I complaining that the illegals work under the table at these jobs and dont pay tax's. im complaining that i am going to have to split up my family and send my kids to my sisters to live because i am about ready to be put out of my house. I am complaining that 4 familys of illegal aliens live in one house up the street from me and drive by me each morning on their way to do my job to send the money to some other country.
08:51 PM on 03/26/2012
Shouldn't you then be mad at the people hiring the illegal immigrants. If it wasn't for them supplying them with jobs, illegal immigrants wouldn't be here in the first place. It starts with them. So why don't people work on reforming that by making the employers hiring illegal immigrants punishments harsher. They come here for jobs in the first place if theres no jobs being offered to them, then they have no reason to be here.

These articles are hard put to explain the legal complexities of these cases. Too dense.

It is lawful to say "deport".
It is legitimate to expect that deported people will take their families with them back to their country of origin, end of story.

But I will say that we are wrong in demonizing undocumented residents more than native-born violent criminals and in making children pay for this disparity. We are wrong to let a system persist that is subjective, imperfect and prone to error with no possibility of amnesty for anyone who shows merit or meets certain requirements.
We are odious when we flex our Born in the USA muscle because birthplace is one of the most fortuitous conditions of all, but, tragically, much too determinant in shaping a human existence.

And be careful, people. When you start to lose empathy and compassion for others, it´s a huge red flag about the quality of your own life.

Yes, I agree. Where is the compassion by the pro-illegals for American families who are suffering from the brunt of illegal immigration? Yeah, their quality of life must be terrible having to look in the mirror and know that they care more about illegal foreigners than their own fellow citizens.
07:51 AM on 12/22/2011
Where do you suggest we deport natural born citizens who have commmitted violent crimes, too?

We cannot support the entire world. Why do you think we have been in debt since WW2? (Clinton did not solve the debt, he just indebted us to China, forcing us to have to import tons of unsafe products, including foods)

The only way to NOT separate families of undocumented immigrants is to deport the whole family together, which means not giving automatic citizenship to a child just because Mom made it across the border before having the baby. Citizenship of children should depend solely on the legal citizenship of the parents.

I do not suggest that citizens be deported at all. I just question the fact that we treat honest, hard-working illegal immigrants worse than Born in the USA criminals. And as for citizenship: jus solis or jus sanguinis. The US accepts either/or as prerequisite for citizenship by birth. You don´t agree with the first condition? It is what it is.

Human beings have been migratory since the beginning of time. Put an end to the concept of borders and, with it, the concept of "illegal" or "legal" would also disappear. Employers could no longer exploit because all jobs would be available to people in equal conditions and, best of all, idiots like the ones posting on here against those who suffer this tragedy would be feeling a lot less superior.

Nothing but advantages and a lot less drama.

Gee, I wonder why the children of citizen parents who are incarcerated for a crime and therefore separated from their children aren't writing to our government about their plight? I wonder how many in here would advocate for their parent's release so that they are no longer seperated from their children?

Why aren't these illegal alien parents taking their children back to their homelands with them? Even if they are U.S. citizens, minor children belong with their parents. Once they are of age they can come back here if they so choose. These kids need to be taught who is at fault here and it isn't our government. It is their parents.

Children are not interested in understanding the complexities of the mess that grown ups make, nor should they be forced to bear that burden. They just want to be with their parents, thus their request, although solely based on emotional criteria, is every bit as legitimate as the next guy´s.

Kids should be taught right from wrong at an early age. If they want to be with their parents then let them go back to their parent's homeland (or theirs) with them.
