Mitt Romney's Jab At Obama's Christmas Vacation Considered Old News By Some

Mitt Romney Obama Christmas Golf

By CHARLES BABINGTON   12/ 8/11 04:01 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Ah, Christmas traditions: colored lights, mistletoe and criticisms of a president's vacation plans.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is hammering President Barack Obama for playing golf and planning his usual family Christmas in Hawaii. Obama should spend more time fixing the economy, says Romney, who is using the issue to raise money.

For some Democrats and Republicans, it's a tired tactic. Every president spends time away from Washington and engages in weekend recreation or relaxation, they note. Former aides to Obama's predecessor, Republican George W. Bush, say all presidents have a right to such pastimes.

"Presidencies wear people out," Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer said earlier this year. "And they just simply deserve a break, especially a president with a couple little kids."

Another former Bush aide, Tony Fratto, defended Obama in 2009, the president's first year in office.

"There should be no criticism of presidents making occasional personal travel," Fratto said. Presidents are also "husbands and fathers, and the pace and pressure of the job are incredible."

Fleischer and Fratto are familiar with the subject. Bush spent 490 days as president at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and 487 days at Camp David – one-third of his eight-year presidency, according to record-keeper Mark Knoller of CBS News. Like Obama and other presidents, Bush noted that he worked during much of the time he spent outside the White House.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said in an Iowa telephone conference call this week that in some respects, Obama's "idea of a `hands-on' approach to the economy is getting a grip on his golf club."

"He's going off for 17 days in Hawaii. He'll be playing a lot of golf," Romney said.

Romney used similar language in a new fundraising letter that asks for $18 – one for each hole on a golf course.

Obama recently announced plans to spend Christmas in his native Hawaii, a family tradition. It soon appeared likely the trip would be shortened because of Congress's struggle to pass important tax and spending legislation.

"We are going to stay here as long as it takes to make sure that the American people's taxes don't go up on January 1st," Obama told reporters Thursday. If Congress fails to meet its deadline, he said, "maybe we'll have a white Christmas here in Washington."

Obama spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, "I don't remember Gov. Romney having a hard time or complaining about this president's predecessor taking his family on vacation – spending, I believe, far more time on vacation than this president."

Other presidents, including Dwight Eisenhower, were sometimes accused of devoting too much time to golf. Bush had at least one controversial moment involving the sport.

Speaking to journalists from a golf course in August 2002, Bush sternly condemned world terrorism. Then, in a transition that seemed jarring, he said, "watch this drive," and hit his tee shot.

Bush took "working" vacations. Obama escapes from the reality of his duties. Time and time again he avoids every crisis we have by leaving town.

Some facts for those libs that just don't get how damaging the Dems and Obama have been:

The Dems took over the House and Senate on Jan 3rd, 2007...at the start of the 110th Congress.

On Jan 3rd, 2007, the DOW closed at 12,621.77. The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%. The unemployment rate was 4.6%.

George Bush's Economic policies set a record of 52 straight months of job creation.

Jan 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Franks took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.

Bush asked Congress 17 times to stop Fannie and Freddie, starting in 2001...because of the risk to the US economy.

In 2009, prior to Obama taking over, Pelosi and Reid bypassed Bush and passed continuing resolutions to keep government running...at that time they passed a massive omnibus spending bill.

Perhaps Obama needs to stay in the country and take a page out of George W. Bush's book.

I think that Obama gets too much "credit" for the actions of Bush and Congress. Congress has not got anything done in months, and yet we point the finger at Obama. He wasn't the best president, but he certainly was NOT the worst. Its a lot harder then most people think, just look at how much Obama has greyed since becoming president.

Really Mitt? Have you forgotten your boy Bush? The man went on more vacations then any other president in history. Now Obama wants to spend some holiday time, which he, like all Americans are entitle to, and Mitt is saying he should stay home and fix the economy? Is Congress going to be there to help him? No, I don't think so. They like everyone else in Washington will be celebrating the Christmas recess with their families. So give it up Mitt, that's an old chest nut thrown by the republicans every year at a sitting Democratic president. When are you people going to realize that Americans don't expect or want their president working during Christmas.

economic conditions for the mid / working class have been going down long before Obama showed up...where was you ire toward GWB for unfunded wars, tax breaks to millionaires and prescription drugs.

Unemployment is lower than it was in Feb 2009, weeks after Obama took office and before any of his proposals were enacted.

you need not say more when what you say should be wrapped in a diaper

I guess an Einstein like yourself conveniently forgets that it was your boy Bush that put us into this mess in the first place. It took 8 years to get us to this point. The man sank this country and then walked away leaving Obama with two costly wars, that have killed thousands of American men and women, a huge deficit, millions of Americans unemployed and the lost of respect by other world leader and you think that Obama is the worse president in American History? When it comes to remembering the facts, I just love the spin you republicans come up with to make any Democratic president look bad. Stop listening to faux news and realize that the truth is out there if people like yourselves could believe something other then what you hear on fox news.

So what? We all know the Obama's do not like or celebrate "Christ-Mas" which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Son of God,that is no big deal for them to take a brake for Christmas.Which many Americans celebrate, why the Obama's have taken a brake for Christmas ever since they have been in the WhiteHouse,They celebrate the muslim Holiday Ramadan every year.Maybe the Obama's enjoy visiting the Muslim Association of Hawaii, during Christmas instead.

More lies from republicans...So what's new?

" Bush spent 490 days as president at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and 487 days at Camp David – one-third of his eight-year presidency..."

""We are going to stay here as long as it takes to make sure that the American people's taxes don't go up on January 1st," Obama told reporters Thursday. If Congress fails to meet its deadline, he said, "maybe we'll have a white Christmas here in Washington."...

What foolish talk! A president never gets vacation time. He wakes up every morning to the same security briefing he gets in Washington. He has the same cadre of advisers and go betweens following his every movement just like in Washington. he has to make the same daily decisions he has to make in Washington. The President works every single day and night. For a republican to try to use this as a way to bring in extra campaign cash is trifling. If a candidate thinks this will make more people vote for him he is begging for the idiot vote.

Take a much needed vacation Preident Obama. Think about how to lower these darn gas prices. There's got to be a way to do this. In the 60 years I have been around I can tell you this, and that's the economy revolves around OIL. Get the OIL prices down, and the economy will florish. It's a challenge that every President has faced, but it works every time. If he can do that and each State legalize Pot we could get a whole lot of tax money from it. Think of it. More jobs as a result too.

Prices have gone down recently due to lower demand because of the economy. I like the pot thing but that might talk another term.

All we need to do on any Romney statement is wait. He'll sooner or later flip-flop.

"Go on Christmas vacation for your family AND America, President Obama. Please, take a MUCH needed rest during these challenging times before our president has a stoke or something like FDR," he'll say. Or should say!

Is Romney promising he will never take a day off if he is President?

If so,this is yet another reason we should not vote for him.
