Obama: 'Ask Osama Bin Laden' On Appeasement Charge

By JIM KUHNHENN   12/08/11 02:55 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Thursday forcefully rejected Republican accusations that his foreign policy is timid and amounts to a policy of "appeasement."

"Ask Osama bin Laden and the 22 out of 30 top al-Qaida leaders who have been taken off the field whether I engage in appeasement. Or whoever is left out there, ask them about that," the president said during a news conference.

He also defended his efforts to block Iran from building a nuclear weapon, saying Iran is now isolated and facing tough international sanctions thanks to the work of his national security team.

His remarks came a day after Republican presidential candidates took turns criticizing Obama's foreign policy as weak during speeches before Jewish activists and donors. They especially focused on the Obama administration's Middle East policy.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania on Wednesday said Obama's policy toward radical Islamists "has been nothing but appeasement."

Obama seemed primed for the question about the critique, and his communication director, Dan Pfeiffer, promptly posted the president's response on Twitter: "Ask Osama Bin Laden."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Wednesday said Obama "emboldened Palestinian hard-liners who now are poised to form a unity government with terrorist Hamas and feel they can bypass Israel at the bargaining table." Romney also accused Obama of being "timid and weak in the face of the existential threat of a nuclear Iran."

Obama, citing "some of the political noise out there," said his administration has "systematically imposed the toughest sanctions" on Iran.

"When we came into office, the world was divided; Iran was unified and moving aggressively on its own agenda," he said. "Today Iran is isolated, and the world is unified and applying the toughest sanctions that Iran's ever experienced, and it's having an impact inside of Iran."

Obama said he was considering all options for dealing with Iran, but declined to say what those options included.

He said Iran's suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons is contrary to the national security interests of the United States and its allies, including Israel. "And we are going to work with the world community to prevent that," the president said.

Last week at a New York fundraiser, Obama specifically addressed concerns from Israel supporters about his administration's approach to the Middle East.

"I try not to pat myself too much on the back, but this administration has done more in terms of the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration," Obama said then.

“Sen. John McCain of Arizona, close to clinching the GOP nomination, called Sen. Barack Obama ‘naive’ today and…blasted him for advocating a bombing of Al Qaeda hide-outs in Pakistan,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Sarah Palin’s pointed criticism of Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda Tuesday morning included a swipe at Obama’s stated commitment to strike at terrorists inside Pakistan’s borders if they are in the sights of the American military.

“Senator Obama has also advocated sending our U.S. military into Pakistan without the approval of the Pakistani government,” Palin said. “Invading the sovereign territory of a troubled partner in the war against terrorism.”

Appearing today on Fox News Sunday, President Bush laid into Sen. Barack Obama, claiming he would “attack Pakistan” and “embrace” Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“I certainly don’t know what he believes in,” Bush said when asked if there had been a “rush to judgment” about Obama. “The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he’s going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad.”

Obama (Aug. 1):
I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will.

I LOVE the look of his eyes after he looks away and then back at the gentleman who asks the question. Very steely. The refugs will NEVER give him credit or taking out Bin Laden, Al Alawaki and the others. But the people of this country know damn well that he has done more in his 3 years as President than Bush did in 8 years of lies, false wars and handouts to his buddies.

member back during the 2008 election when John McCain — and Hillary Clinton — pummeled Barack Obama for saying he would go into Pakistan to get Osama bin Laden if the Pakistani government wouldn’t?

We do…

It began with comments Obama made in August, 2007 that if elected, he would make U.S. aid to Pakistan conditional: “Pakistan must make substantial progress in closing down the training camps, evicting foreign fighters, and preventing the Taliban from using Pakistan as a staging area for attacks in Afghanistan.”

He continued:

I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear: There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. Obama loves to take credit for killing Bin Laden. I guess that is his only accomplishment. I agree that Obama did good job. Bin Laden got it right in the head which is what he deserved.

I'm giving Obama credit even though he inherited the team Bush put it place to take out these low lifes. Obama is taking all the credit.

He has done more then any other administration in terms of security of Israel? Maybe he should ask the Israeli leadership if they feel that way before making such an outrageous claim. Obama has treated them like third rate world leaders and publicly embarrassed them when they visited him here in Washington. His approach to Iran, Palestine, etc. has actually created a much more dangerous situation for Israel to the point of making them feel more isolated then ever before. Obama keeps using the results of Bush implemented technology and drone programs as examples of how "tough" he is in dealing with terrorists (although he refuses to call them terrorists) when he really has had little to do with anything associated with putting these programs in place. He allowed the Iraqi leadership to out maneuver him and, after, billions of dollars, thousands of deaths and injured American soldiers, we are being "forced" out of Iraq with nothing to show for leading the removal of a dictator and giving Iraq a chance to have a democratic government. No oil deals, air bases, or any "payback" after all of that we have done to help the Iraqi people just shows where his head is in the middle east and his foreign policy reflects this. I think he is a closet Muslim.

First it is time for the US to stop sniffing after the Israeli's. Israel has no intention of living peacefully with the Palestines and all they love to do is decry to the world that they are disadvantaged, and need to grow their settlements to the point that they weed out the hopes of the Palestinian people. I believe they should have a homeland but they cannot be the middle-east bully they have been. As for Obama reaching out the Iran and other countries..How long can the middle east policy run on an engine of hate. All nations must try to reach out and see if there is a way for all to co-exist and be respectful of the religion, cultures, etc. For those that slap your hand then bombs away... As for being "forced" out of Iraq. We NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN IRAQ! Bush has 7 years and the bloods of thousands on his hands for lying about the WMD's. If you think he's a closet Muslim then sit right besides him because anyone reading your post will know you are a racist, closet ignorant.

All he did was okay a strike that his predecessor prepared and his intel community planned.

Dude says, "Okay, do it," and suddenly he's Patton.

Unreal. NEVER BEFORE HAS THE BAR BEEN SET SO INCREDIBLY LOW FOR EVERYTHING A PRESIDENT DOES.

--Real unemployment is 11%--but hey, without Obama, it would have been so much worse.
--The deficit has gone from 10 to 15 trillion in less than 3 years--but hey, without Obama, it would have been much worse.
--China? Much worse without Obama.
--Muslim extremists seizing Middle East? Much worse without Obama.

EVERYTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN WORSE--SOMEHOW! This is the idiotically low bar set for this man. He even gets credit for OK'ing a strike. Incredible.

Bush did not prepare the plan that got OBL. That was purely the Obama Admin. W had given up on finding OBL and I quote "I don't think about him much and don't care" (google it if you dare).

He gave the order, thus he gets the credit.

And FYI if this had been a Repub. ya'll would be shouting from the rooftops how great "your" predsident was.

Clinton had a chance to get Bin Laden and said no. Bush knew where he was and would not cross in to Pakistan to get him and let him head to the hills (literally) of Afghanistan. Obama put a bead on his head and took him out. I don't know what you are smoking but in my book that notch goes on his belt and no one elses.

If we follow your own logic then Obama is actually the best choice as no one on the GOP side has proven they are capable to lead.

With that said, so what;s your point?

I can understand why Obama dosen't want to make anyone look bad. Just look at the e-mails I have received.

IN HIS OWN WORDS. . . . . .

2008: "Navy Seal Team 6 is Cheney's private assassination team."

2011: "I put together Seal Team 6 to take out Bin Laden."

2008: "Bin Laden is innocent until proven guilty, and must be captured alive and given a fair trial."

2011: "I authorized Seal Team 6 to kill Bin Laden."

2008: "Guantanamo is entirely unnecessary, and the detainees should not be interrogated."

2011: "Vital intelligence was obtained from Guantanamo detainees that led to our locating Bin Laden."

Quote of the Day:
"If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you're not a idiot"
A nation of sheep begets a government of wolves."
