'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Hard Copy Viral Video, Daniel Craig On Rooney Mara (VIDEO)

Dragon Tattoo Mara

David Fincher may not have any use for movie trailers or promotion, but the marketing people at Sony pushing "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" have other ideas. The Oscar-nominated director can take solace in the fact, however, that at least the film's viral campaign follows his own dark and mysterious style.

A new video found at the "Dragon Tattoo" tumblr site, Mouth Taped Shut thrusts fans into the brooding and gritty past that Mikael Blomkvist, the journalist portrayed by Daniel Craig in the film, is seeking to uncover. The video features an elaborate re-creation of the old syndicated tabloid mystery show "Hard Copy," with an over nine minute segment looking into the death of Harriet Vanger. Using editing tricks to make it look like it's been transfered from a number of VHS tapes over the years, the "segment" probes the questions of Hedeby Island, with an angry neighbor leading the charge.

The video sets up the mystery that Craig and Rooney Mara, who plays hacker/investigator Lisbeth Salander, will take on in the film. It also marks another step toward opening the film up for public inspection ahead of its late December release date; in addition to the viral content, Craig has begun giving interviews -- however reluctantly -- to promote the movie.

Amongst his recent interviews, Craig spoke to Time Out London about his investigator character and more.

"What I like about him is that he's flawed, he's a complex, weak, egotistical man on a moral crusade," he said. "And all those things combined are interesting, plus he has this brilliant relationship with this girl, Lisbeth Salander, this damaged, hyper-intelligent human being. On paper, they shouldn't come together, but they do and they respond to each other. She's the one with the balls in the relationship. He's happy to watch while she beats someone up."

The relationship, of course, is spelled out in the original books and, subsequently, the film's adapted screenplay, but Craig also thinks the choice of Mara to play Salander was crucial.

"There were shenanigans going on while she was being cast," Craig remembered. "David Fincher was adamant and I get that. Just look at the beginning of 'The Social Network,' she's phenomenal. She's got something about her, but also she's physically perfect. When she puts the hoodie on and the leather jacket, she looks like a 14-year-old boy, she looks sexless. Which is perfect. The other side of it is that when she doesn't have that on, she's really sexy."

SOCIALISM IS AWESOME

Fincher is becoming the new Hitchcock. The Social Network is an underrated, yes underrated, work of Shakespearean proportions. Zodiac is a tremendously overlooked masterpiece. Htchcock would be proud. Now with Dragon Tattoo He's revisiting the mystery genre that he conquered with Se7en. I am a huge fan of the original Swedish films and it will be tough to top them. Even if this film is nearly shot for shot remade the talent behind it will rescue it from doom. The government should subsidize talented directors like Fincher.

The trailers look great. It looks like Fincher really went the extra mile to stay consistent with the book and the way it describes Michael Blomkvist, Lisbeth Salander, and Erika Berger. The Swedish versions just didn't represent those characters the way they were written. As much as people seem to be enthralled with the Swedish films, they just didn't capture the grittiness of Stieg Larsson's stories or the depth of the conspiracies. Hopefully Fincher can accomplish this.

I didn't mind it when they remade 'Let the Right One In". I think the books are great. I think it broaden's the "work' and imagination of any creator.

Yeah good take, I will totally watch Lisbeth beat up people. Girls are taking over. She's a vigilante, with a twisted take on morals, but fights for good.

Remaking the Swedish version is as bad as remaking "La Femme Nikita" as "No Way Out." Some movies are too good to be topped. Even Fincher (who I adore) could do no better than to exactly replicate the original.

They're readapting the book

Since you haven 't seen Fincher's film, I don't really see how you could say that.

If and when you are proven mistaken, will you admit it?

The Swedish films were so good I'm not sure Hollywood can top them.

I have to disagree. I felt the original films were lacking integral parts of the book. I also felt that the girl cast to play Lisbeth was not right for the roll, nor was the actor who played Blomkvist. I am excited to see what Fincher does with the story. His movies are always dark and intense, just like the book was.

Now, more than ever, must return to my Kindle...must finish this book before the release of Hollywood's version of this remake of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The hype has been oh so enveloping that I can't wait both to finish the book and to the see the movie. Esp can't wait to see Craig (007) give way to Mara (the ball-buster) in the movie.

Oh Shirley you would finish the book in no time. I love the frienship between Lisbeth and Michale, priceless. There is a page where Michael tells Lisabeth what really frindship is, "if there is no trust the frindship crumbles."

A really creative way to add to the movie. A little heavy handed with the vidoe blips and static, but I love the idea. Great use of alternative media to build the experience.

I loved the original, but have no problem with a "remake" especially if it will encourage more people to read the books. I look forward to seeing it.

The word "Strange" was used in three headlines today in the entertainment section. Perhaps they should hire more than one copy writer.

casting daniel craig was such a hollywood move to me. the dude is is in peak physical condition, while the swedish blomkvist was this much more human, doughy looking guy. Idk maybe i'll change my mind when i see it.

"Doughy" -- exactly my impression from reading the books! Blomkvist is a writer, and writers have to sit to work. Then at the end of the day, they're too beat to work out. Craig looks nothing like the writers I know -- and I know lots of them. But he does have that cynical aura, so it could work. Rooney Mara looks more like her character than Craig does.

He's a good actor and can carry a film so I don't mind his casting, but he isn't who I pictured. Ironically who I did picture as Blomkvist was a young Stellan Skarsgaard who is actually playing Martin. I'm sure Stellan will be great for Martin though and he is the right age for that part. The most baffling casting for me was Robin Wright as Erika, she just seems too docile and earthy, I'd rather have a Juliane Moore or Michelle Pfiffer type

Peter Skarsgaard would have worked well for Blomkvist....
