Twitter's 9 Biggest New Features: What You Need To Know About The Redesign (PICTURES, VIDEO)

Twitter on Thursday introduced a dramatic overhaul of its website and mobile apps.

The redesign focuses on simplicity and encourages participation from both established users and newbies who might not be familiar with the site's modus operandi. A new emphasis on organization will streamline the site's features. Bringing hashtags (#), @mentions and personalization into the foreground, Twitter has broken the site's layout into four separate sections. A customized feed will help users easily discover and interact with new content. Twitter has also created unique pages just for brands.

The company hopes to "bridge the gap between the awareness of Twitter and the engagement on Twitter," said CEO Dick Costolo said at the design's launch at the company's new headquarters in San Francisco, according to the AP.

TechCrunch says of the revamp, "While some aspects of the redesign look like reorganized versions of what was there before, the heavy incorporation of symbols could help the service become more mainstream than ever."

Twitter's revamped interface looks a bit like Facebook's new Timeline profile, which is currently rolling out to users across the world. While Twitter's big changes are already live on the site's new mobile apps, web users will see the changes "over the next few weeks," according to a post on the Twitter Blog.

Four new buttons will help users navigate the site. Pictured above, these buttons will take users to pages labeled "Home" (represented by the house icon), "Connect" (@), "Discover" (#) and "Me" (the silhouette icon). Home is where your stream of followers' tweets lives, Connect is where you can view how other tweeters are interacting with you and your tweets, Discover is where you can search for people and topics, and Me lets you view your personal profile and content.

AllThingsD writes that the overhauled site is "supposed to be 500 percent faster than Twitter was three or four months ago."

Twitter was lacking the public eye's attention so they wanted to get back in the game!

But let’s not get side tracked here, there’s the one main underlying reason for all these changes: the profit.

There's something funny about people in a HuffPo commentary thread talking about the lameness of Twitter.

These are some cool changes, but who reads Twitter on the Twitter site? I use a desktop client tucked away in a corner of my screen. Or I read tweets on my phone.

I generally love Twitter's graphical presence, but the rounded corners here, especially as rounded-corner pods, are a bit yesteryear. But overall I like the design of the Twitter site, past and present.

Twitter is lame. End of discussion.

Twitter is for people with not signs of intelligent life. Reconnect with reality, not meaningless minutia.

Geesh -- no. Now if I was one of those twitter types, I could have twittered this error. It would be of the caliber for a tweet.

They took away a feature that I liked with Twitter for Android. You could swipe a tweet and then retweet it. Now you have open the tweet to retweet it. :(

Honestly, I'm so tired of these overhauls. I don't use mobile apps and I resent being forced to use a design tailored to them -- it's confusing and more time consuming than the old design. For example, I used to be able to click on a Twitter name in a user's stream and their page would pop up in the right hand column, making it easy for me to follow them. I could continue down the stream and click on someone else, and their profile would replace the last.

Now, I have to deal with a pop up -- which means every time I want to follow someone new I have to "X" out of the pop up first to go back to the Twitter stream I was looking at. This is ridiculous. I am now less inclined to use Twitter and will be looking for a program that is easier to use. Twitter should have given people a choice.

These welcome changes are huge step forward. The new graphics and menu functions dramatically improve the site’s usability and appeal. With 100 million users, but many fewer regularly tweeting, traffic may soon increase exponentially.

I love Twitter. My friends don't get it. It's a great marketing tool if you understand how to use it properly.
