Cat With 26 Toes To Foot The Bill For Animal Rescue Center (VIDEO)

Meet ginger-and-white tabby Daniel, the cat with 26 toes.

This cute tom has two extra toes on each foot, making him a near record breaker in the toe stakes.

With his freaky feet, he is helping Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Wisconsin raise their profile, and the money they need to move their building due to a rent increase.

They are seeking small donations of $26 – or $1 per toe, so essentially Daniel will be footing the bill.

His condition is called polydactylism and cats like this are often given nicknames including "boxing cats", "mitten cats", "mitten-foot cats," "snowshoe cats", "thumb cats", "six-fingered cats" and "Hemingway cats."

Daniel's 26 toes are only two shy of the Guinness world record, and the footloose tom was originally going to be sheltered out, however Amy Rowell, owner of the Animal Rescue Center in Greendale believes this cat was brought to her by fate.

She found the 26 toe-d tom at animal control. Animal Rescue Center tends to adopt cats that would otherwise be put down. He was very clearly saying, "I need to be rescued, I'd like to be your friend, please pay attention to me",' she said. 'And when a sign is that obvious, we tend to not ignore it."

I had a kitty like this! He had been thrown out of a moving car on the highway in Massachussetts. I'm not generally a cat person, but I LOVED this cat.

I don't know if it's because he was abused or because he's genetically a little different, but he was very clingy and needed lots of attention, unlike cats usually do.

He hated when we watched TV, and he would warn you to stop and pay attention to him by sitting behind you on the couch and extending his giant paw next to your face. You had a few seconds to respond before getting slapped. His front paws looked like big mittens, almost like he had thumbs :)

As far as I could tell, the only limitation my cat have is that his claws didn't always work right..it made me worried to let him be outside, but easier to give him a bath!

We have three rescue cats (have been rescuing cats from animal pounds for 25 years now) and two of them are now seniors. All I want for Christmas is to rescue another one from death at the shelter. We don't adopt kittens as they are much easier to adopt. As soon as my husband walks by my computer, I often will put up an article or click over to petfinder. He thinks we have enough right now, but maybe I'll win out and another cat will hit the "feline lottery" ... a life with us.

mmm someone needs to do some math--2 extra on each foot-the pic shows 6 toes-6X4=24 which means he either has 24 toes or he has 3 extra on 2 feet and 2 extra on 2 feet-there is no way he has 2 extra on each foot and it ads up to 26--

Most cats have 5 toes on each front foot and 4 toes on each back foot for a total of 18 toes. Add 8 extra toes and its makes 26 toes in all

It adds up if you count the dew claws, the 5th toes, on his front paws. 5 toes + 2 extra on each front paw, plus 6 on each back paw equals 26.

What a sweet boy.. I love cats :)

Good story. I think we need to do every thing we can to help out the animals. Be it more adoptions or more facilities to house these unwanted animals, I would be more inclined to vote for a tax increase of this sort versus some of the others......

What a sweet kitty. I wouldn't care if he had 40 toes I'd still think he was precious.

My cat Joe has a boatload of toes, too. We had to have a few of the smaller ones growing between his normal toes removed. He's even got a couple growing halfway up his leg.

He's a sweet boy, but he must be some kind of mutant.

Almost sounds like one of those new AWD cats. LOL
