Dan Gilbert Emails David Stern: Cavs Owner Calls Proposed Chris Paul Trade 'Travesty'

NBA teams in the Western Conference were understandably fearful of having to face a Lakers' backcourt featuring both Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul. How could anyone defend such a tandem if both players stayed healthy? Would they surpass the Frazier-Monroe and West-Goodrich backcourts as best of all time?

While fans around the NBA were wondering how many wins such a pair would post over the shortened 66-game schedule, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and his peers were far more concerned with the Lakers' record keeping than their won-loss record. Gilbert, especially, was just not going to sit idly by as Paul got traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. So what did he do? He wrote his feelings down and emailed them to NBA Commissioner David Stern.

And, no, the email was not in the same comic sans font that Gilbert used to excoriate LeBron James after "The Decision."

At one point on Thursday, Chris Paul was considered a Laker after several news outlets reported a three-team deal between the Hornets, Lakers and Rockets. Los Angeles was set to give up Lamar Odom, who didn't take the news very well, and Pau Gasol in order to acquire the all-star point guard. But later that night, Stern suddenly nixed the deal/ Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! and several others reported that the owners -- who happen to be the stakeholders of the Hornets -- pressed Stern to void the agreed upon deal.

League spokesman Mike Bass denied that the owners killed the deal and indicated the trade was vetoed for "basketball reasons."

However, the Yahoo! Sports Staff obtained an email sent from Gilbert to Stern in which he explicitly urged the Commissioner stop the trade. Initially it was believed that Gilbert's lobbying against the trade may have factored into Stern's decision, however, Wojnarowski, later tweeted that a timestamp on the email indicated it was sent after 10 p.m. when the trade had already been vetoed.

"It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed," Gilbert wrote in the email obtained by Yahoo!. "This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets."

In the email, Gilbert seemed particularly bothered by the fact that the proposed swap would allow the Lakers to save $40 million while also getting the best player in the trade. Even worse, Gilbert feared that the Lakers would still be able to acquire all-star center Dwight Howard later on from the Orlando Magic. Expressing a sentiment likely to be felt in the sparsely-filled arenas of the many also-ran teams, Gilbert asked Stern "When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?"

Despite Bass' denial it certainly seems like "basketball owners' reasons" were as much a factor in this bold veto as anything likely to happen on the court.

Lakers SAVE a ton AND get a good player?
Now THAT's a business plus.
Regardless of fans focusing on individual players, sorry, but coaching WINS championships.
Then again, $100 for nose-bleed seats keeps most fans away.
Here is hope'n that the silly princess owners' lockout didn't harm the NBA brand so much that ONLY billionaires that don't mind the money loser, will qualify to own a club.

Too bad. Yes, the Lakers would have received a very good player in Chris Paul, but New Orleans would have been better off with the trade.

The NBA should contract (in the shrink sense) both New Orleans and Cleveland out of existence as franchises.

I really don't see the problem with the trade...it's not as if they're trading nothing for Paul (Gasol is arguably as good or better player

That's why I can't watch NBA basketball anymore. There are a couple good teams and the rest are like the Washington Generals. In addition the refs have far too much say in the outcome of games.

Why do people take things they heard on ESPN and try to pass it off as an original thought? Come on man.

Dan Gilbert has reached a status that he deserves to have:the worst owner in all of sports. He is a crybaby and a spoiled brat. I hope that someone can buy the Cavs from him one day. I hate to say this, but the Cavaliers fans need to tell Danny Boy to shut up.

Being a successful small market team is probably 80% luck. You get lucky to get a Durant, a Paul, a James, a Duncan.
OKC and especially San Antonio were able to take that giant stroke of luck and make the most of it whereas Aaron Gray was a starting center for New Orleans last year and Lebron James was passing to Boobie Gibson.
Dan Gilbert won the lottery and squandered it away.

What a cry-baby. Lakers know how to run a team correctly, and for that they should be punished? When a league caters to the bottom-feeders who live off the luxury taxes of the richest teams, you're in trouble. Gilbert needs to go away, and quick.

At one point, Lebron James was trying to recruit other players such as Dwayne Wade to Cleveland. For some reason, I don't think he would be complaining now if that happened.

What?? It is completely true. For years James asked, begged to get quality players so he could play in Cleveland forever. This tool goes out and gets who? Shaq when he was no longer playing to win but just to have fun? Your owner is a crook now dealing with karma from making his money off the poor and desperate with his loans at 40%-200% interest. Cleveland sports....where the talent goes to die.

Is he going to petition the league to start handing out participating trophies as well?
06:59 PM on 12/09/2011
You know, Gilbert may still be stinging from his franchise losing their best shot at any relevance, and he's also guilty, imo, of actions and comments unbefitting an owner of a professional team, but his "Washington Generals" comment, I think, is on point. If the league's best players continue flocking to only the "sexy", big market teams the league as a whole becomes less competitive and the regular season somewhat pointless. If I was a small market owner I'd object to that, too.

It'll be interesting to see where the leagues goes from this point as it is a PR nightmare for all involved.

All teams were small market at one point, through ingenuity and proper management they turned themselves into successful franchises. This clown has had a handful of first round success stories, and he managed to squander them all away.

I don't disagree there. His mishandling of the LBJ situation I think sealed his fate. He needs to let that one go and concentrate on the future.

I like the Washington Generals comment.
The richest teams are always going to win. They will always end up with the best players at the highest salaries. If player payrolls were equal on each team then the advantage would be gone. Small markets and less wealthy owners could hire good coaches, good players, and win. Maybe if the union paid the players or something.
But that would be fair. Can't have any of that.

Really? So it wasn't fair that he landed LeBron in the Lottery huh?

I'll tell you what isn't fair, surrounding Lebron with a bunch of trash and expecting to win a championship from it. You have no idea what your talking about, back away from the comp and stop commenting on sports, cause your out of your element.

Hey guess what, that crappy coach that was coaching IN cleveland for the Cavs, a small market team, and Gilbert.... he's now coaching the Lakers. LOL.

Again, your waaaaay out of your element. Go back to the writing or playing the flute....

OKC and Memphis seem to be doing rather fine without having many marquee players on their rosters, how about this loser BUILD a team instead of whining constantly?
