Swimming With Pigs In The Bahamas (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/09/11 01:20 PM ET Updated: 12/09/11 01:43 PM ET

Nearby Paradise Island may have a swim-with-dolphins program, but it's Exuma Key in the Bahamas that has what may be the world's weirdest water-going wildlife: pigs.

Interestingly, a group of hogs is often called a drift, a particularly fitting name for this group, captured by snorkelers plying the shallows off Exuma.

If swimming with the pigs takes off, we may have to add the Bahamas to our list of the world's coolest animal migrations to watch.

Pig Beach, (Big Majors Cay, nearby to Staniel Cay in the Exumas, Bahamas)

It seems crazy to me that this very small feature of the 150 plus miles of these enchanted islands gets the headline. It's a good hook to get the curious adventure traveller, but after the twenty or so minutes watching/photographing them swim, eat, and poop what's next? Strange that's a common question with so many outrageous adventures so closeby. The trick is, like everything else, knowing where they are. That's where we come in. Eight years and 20,000 nautical miles later sailing a big 50' catamaran we could brag a little, but we let our past adventures do the talking. Check us out, please =) www.yachtsolstice.com

it was june of 90' and i was sitting on the beach near toledo city on the island of cebu. i had only been in the philippines for about a month by that time but by then i'd assumed i had seen it all, oh how wrong i was. in june residents of cebu have this huge celebration and everyone serves up the best food they can as the centerpiece for the celebration which includes the traditional pit roasted pig. the pigs though aren't all locally raised i was soon to find out but on a neighboring island. so i am sitting there under a palm tree, san miguel beer in hand with a local friend and classmate when i see a large barge like boat heading into shore, then it stops. the front drops and dozens of pigs are pushed out into the water and swim in mass to the shore. i grew up in the rural west and herding cattle and other livestock is far from being something new for me to see but this was so surreal. it became even more disconcerting when they took a sharp left and headed straight for us instead of the portion of the beach where they were intended to go. nonetheless the image of all those swimming pigs heading straight for me will forever be burned into my memories.

I have pet rats and my other love is pigs. I recently moved from NYC to upstate,NY to live in peace with my rats and hopefully to get two pet pig rescues this spring. I'm a vegan. It was wonderful to see real handsome men being kind to the pigs.
Sincerely,

Pigs are actually very intelligent. Equally as intelligent as dogs. They can play video games.

THE IRONY of this story which I am certain the writers are completely unaware of is that "Paradise Island" where they swim with the (inhumanely captured and confined for our amusement) dolphins,
was originally named "HOG ISLAND". They felt that it was suited to tourists and then many years ago renamed it Paradise Island.

Did you know that in the north where it's much colder in winter, they sometimes stack up , just like firewood, to keep warm ? The stack has been known to get so high, the bottom pig is suffocated by the weight of the ones above him/her. I have seen stacks 4 high, where everyone looked warm, and comfortable. Check it out. This is true.
