Occupy Boston: Police Evict Protesters; 46 Arrested

Occupy Boston

First Posted: 12/10/11 09:43 AM ET Updated: 12/11/11 11:02 AM ET

BOSTON (AP) -- Police officers swept through Dewey Square early Saturday, tearing down tents at the Occupy Boston encampment and arresting dozens of protesters, bringing a peaceful end to the 10-week demonstration.

Officers began moving into the encampment at about 5 a.m. to "ensure compliance with the trespassing law," police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. The city had set a deadline for midnight Thursday for the protesters to abandon the site but police took no action until early Saturday, making Boston the latest city where officials moved to oust protesters demonstrating against what they call corporate greed and economic injustice.

As police moved in, about two dozen demonstrators linked arms and sat down in nonviolent protest and officers soon began arresting them, according to the Boston Globe.

The protesters were "very accommodating" to the officers, Driscoll said. Forty-six people were arrested on charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct, police said. No injuries were reported.

The entire operation lasted less than an hour. Crews then entered the area to begin cleaning it.

Protesters first erected the encampment on Sept. 30. Many pulled up stakes and left the encampment Thursday after learning of the midnight deadline Mayor Thomas Menino had set for them to leave the square, but others stayed, and some said they were prepared to be arrested.

While Menino previously had said the city had no plans to forcibly remove the encampment, he appeared to become increasingly impatient with the protesters in recent days, saying the occupation had become a public health and safety hazard. He issued his ultimatum after a judge ruled on Wednesday that the protesters had no right to stay in Dewey Square.

Protesters estimate that 100 to 150 activists lived in the Boston encampment. Demonstrators were forcibly removed from similar encampments in New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

When an Occupy Miami member offered evicted protestors vacant apartments in a building he owns in Downtown Miami's Overtown neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect solution: the 'Peace City' space would provide headquarters for the movement and shelter a small faction of the group's most vulnerable members. But it hasn't gone well. Other tenants say the building has become a cesspool of drug use and violence while non-resident Occupy Miami members are trying to distance themselves from the 'radicals' -- all while the two factions are wrestling for control over Occupy Miami's social media sites and future plans.

From the Miami New Times:

The feud between the Overtown occupiers and more mainstream members has only gotten worse. The two factions are now battling for control of Occupy Miami's social media sites. The movement's main Twitter account recently announced it had been "hijacked by a small, non-consensus group of radical members." The Occupy Miami Facebook page was also temporarily hacked by someone inside Peace City. Meanwhile, the Overtown occupation is slowly driving away more moderate members.

"This is a black eye on the Occupy movement," says Shannon Reaze, an Overtown community organizer and Occupy Miami supporter who is now helping tenants move out of Paz's building. "The violence and drugs going on here are way outside of what I thought Occupy stood for. This place is destabilized."

...The supposedly hard-core activists here spend their days drinking and getting high. And as Peace City devolves into lawlessness, the most committed occupiers are leaving. Local landowners and politicians want the place shut down, while cops are suspicious. Yet as long as Paz wants the protesters around, nothing short of a demolition order can keep them out.

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has a new lawsuit involving tents on its hands. But it doesn't involve temporary structures in McPherson Square.

Two protesters arrested during a February action outside Merrill Lynch's offices on 15th Street NW near McPherson Square have filed suit against the Metropolitan Police Department, Legal Times reports. (Read the complaint here.)

The plaintiffs, Samuel Dukore and Kelly Canavan, were part of a "targeted occupation" of Merrill Lynch on Feb. 13 where protesters were raising awareness about Merrill Lynch's reportedly close ties with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Issa, for his part, claims that the reports of these close ties are "wildly inaccurate."

OWS reports via its website:

After the brutal attack on the attempted re-occupation of Liberty Square by NYPD on the 6-month anniversary of #OWS, a number of Occupiers have relocated their base of occupation to Union Square in midtown Manhattan, a point of convergence for several #OWS protests over the past 6 months.

According to reports on the ground, several dozen people slept in the park after the illegal and violent raid on Liberty Square. Over 70 people remain, now on Day 3. Although tents and tables are still banned, Occupiers have brought blankets and sleeping gear. Many are calling it ¨the new Occupation.¨ In addition to holding General Assemblies, Union Square Occupiers are providing vital jail support for those arrested on #M17 as they are released from NYPD custody. So far, the NYPD has made no attempt to remove Occupiers or prevent them from sleeping in the park.

The woman had the apparent seizure has been identified by the New York Observer as Cecily McMillan:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

A video uploaded to Youtube late Saturday night purports to show the attack. Two women can be heard commenting, “There’s Cecily,” then there is confusion as the police clearly perform a violent take-down on someone in the crowd.

According to Jeff Sharlet’s November, 2011 article about the Occupy Movement, this may be Ms. McMillan’s second violent encounter with police.

The paper reports from last night's chaos at Zuccotti Park:

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention. For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands until an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

OWS has degenerated into yet another left vs right BS movement, and has accomplished nothing. It's lost the public's interest and is now know just for confrontations with cops. It is now just more background noise.
Don’t give me the “dialogue” routine, the only dialogue is about the clashes with cops and how irrelevant OWS is!
I don't expect many of you right wing/left wing drones to get this!
As much as I agree and sympathize with OWS, it's hardly the big revolution it's touted to be.
It's really an outburst of mostly left wing activism, something that's been largely dormant for years ( anti war protesting notwithstanding).
It's present course is self limiting, it's preaching to the converted and not winning where it counts, with middle America.
Yes , you need to win over the red states, the non left leaning people. Unfortunately the left shows it's prejudice here, disliking a good chunk of the 99% it claims to represent. The present focus on confrontation plays well with those already in the OWS camp, but alienates everyone else. I know nobody will agree with me, but if OWS is truly going to represent "the 99%", it had better control it's image, come up with some real solutions and clean up it's act. Right now it represents maybe 30% of the population. A long way to go.
This is the how the Tea Party started, OWS will suffer a similar fate if it continues the way it's going.

Wow, suppression of the American taxpayers right of free speech, true change brought to us by Obama. Last I checked, Obama was a democrat and yet some shallow minds want to blame republicans for his actions and lack of action. Nothing can good can come from a political party, especially the socialist leaning democratic party, that refuses to hold its elected officials accountable.

I have never been so proud to be an American. To see our young people off of the couches and video games and willing to go to jail for what they believe in. Willing to be brutalized by the police, pepper sprayed, tear gassed, handcuffed for hours until you lose circulation in parts of your hands.

Now we're seeing the right tactics. Move the protests out of the streets and parks and into the stores, banks and office buildings. Confront the corporations and banks on their own turf. If the police want to react with arrests let them fill the jails.

Right now, I am watching Bloomberg TV, the only news channel I can stand. In the next few hours, France and Italy will be launching a sale of bonds (ie debt) to meet the funds they need in order to stand. I have a terrible sense the money changers won't buy enough of them, driving interest rates even highers for their bonds. Italy is already a disaster, and now it is spreading to France. This is an important story, only Bloomberg is covering it.
OWS is a response to this world financial implosion. The senate passed a bill 93-7 last week adding the military to our police presence here at home. It is now in the house, and will pass with equally high percentage making it veto proof. They can pick up anyone, lock them away for years without charges or any due process. We lost all our civil rights under Bush, now we are seeing the results. OWS will vanish, it will have to go deeply underground to survive. Nobody in their right mind want such a fate. Oppression is the new method of government in this country, they no longer care to preserve the illusion of freedoms.

As more people become familiar with Charles Ferguson's documentary "Inside Job" the occupy movement can only grow (Boston is just warming up - go Boston!).

I hate to use the expression 'rip off' but this is exactly what the 1% did to the 99%. The massive recession which became apparent in 2008 was a carefully calculated rip off of the 99% by the 1%. It was no accident. And boy did they rip us off. Anyone defending the 1% doesn't know the facts.

Nothing will truly change or anything new be empowered until every soul in these United States COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDS the "Money-As-Debt Usury Extortion Fractional Reserve PRIVATE INSIDER CRONY Banking System" invented by the Bank of England in 1694.

Even our elite universities do not teach the monetary and financial history of the last 300 years. Thinking people have to start digging on THEIR OWN in these matters to understand how the current World INSIDER PRIVATE Banking System works.

You make some excellent points. People speaking out against OWS refuse to face the truth, they are going to lose, too. The corruption in the global economy is breathtaking in it's depth.
I see three factions seeking to dominate in a world government. 1. China, 2, Russia & 3 is the corporate oligarchy strangling the life out of Europe and America. China, like the US, rules by oppression, but they have a growing middle class, and probably won't revolt. Russia is being led by a 21st century Napoleon, the people are used to suffering and want their national greatness back. They rule by oppression, but the people will be behind a return to greatness. The 3rd, and weakest is the corporate oligarchy choking the life out of Europe and America. Unlike China and Russia, we are not a people used to oppression, we despise the corporate powers, and probably won't lie down for it. We are people who are not used to oppression, and we will fight it.

we're all hamsters on neocon "financially engineered" and "financially innovated" wheels

we have sent TRILLIONS to israel in direct and indirect aid over the decades

The number of Israeli billionaires doubled over the last two years to 16 while their combined wealth tripled to $45 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Recently deceased shipping magnate Sammy Ofer led his countrymen with $10.3 billion, followed by diamond mine mogul Benny Steinmetz and Carnival Cruise heiress Shari Arison.

While much of the world struggles with recession, Israel's economy is going strong and is minting new millionaires at a faster rate than just about any other country. The number of Israeli millionaires nearly doubled to 10,153 from 2008 to 2010, according to the Merrill Lynch-Capgemini World Wealth Report.

Those who are super-rich are no longer squeamish about displaying their wealth. One tycoon is building a 60,000-square-foot estate in the ancient city of Caesarea, along the coast between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Plans are underway for a special terminal at Ben-Gurion airport to handle the bustling traffic in private planes and helicopters. The national motor vehicle department said recently that it had to draft new regulations to allow for the import of Rolls-Royces, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins.

The bill passed by the senate last week 93-7 made it clear who our leaders serve. It adds the military to government police presence, establishes a police state here at home. They will be able to arrest anyone, hold them for years without charges or due process. That is their answer to OWS. The real criminals own our congress, courts and executive branch.
