Ross Truett Ashley, Virginia Tech Shooter, Described As 'Friendly'

Ross Truett Ashley

By BOB LEWIS and STEVE SZKOTAK   12/10/11 04:19 PM ET   AP

RADFORD, Va. -- The man authorities say killed a Virginia Tech police officer before committing suicide had broken up with his girlfriend over the summer and vaguely mentioned some family issues, but he was loyal and never hinted at plans for violence, friends and former classmates said Saturday.

Police say Ross Truett Ashley, 22, stole a car at gunpoint Wednesday from his landlord's office in what would be a precursor to the events a day later: On Thursday, police say he killed the police officer, then turned the gun on himself in a parking lot on the campus.

"Ross wasn't that kind of person. He was friendly, nice," said Nic Robinson, a 21-year-old history major at Radford University preparing for law school. "Obviously, he had his bad days, but it was the same as anyone else having those days."

The most notable setback in his life that Robinson knew about was Ashley's breakup over the summer with his girlfriend. It clearly hurt him, she said, but she never saw him obsess over it.

There were other issues in Ashley's life, however, that he wasn't as forthcoming about, she said.

"We all have our family problems, so the way that he was saying it just made it kind of seem like, `just another thing to add to the list," she said. "He never made anything sound like, `This is serious, I need you to sit down.'"

Ashley never talked about guns or weapons, and she said she never knew whether he owned or knew how to use one. He also didn't use drugs or drink heavily.

Former classmates in his hometown described him as a hard-nosed football player who had a deep knowledge of the Bible.

J.D. Muller, 22, said he and Ashley kept in touch through social media but hadn't spoken in person for a couple of years. Ashley never made any suggestions that he might turn violent, Muller said. He said he never recalled Ashley so much as losing his temper or getting upset, and Ashley also seemed to know Scripture well.

"He wasn't some kind of monster that people are trying to depict him as," Muller said.

Those who knew Ashley said he could be standoffish and reserved, and one neighbor said he liked to run down the hallways of his building. Ashley lived in an apartment in the college town of Radford and was a part-time student at the university there.

"He was always very nice, I would say that he was reserved, but I wouldn't call him a loner," said 22-year-old Kyle Carlson, who graduated high school with Ashley and had a few advanced-level classes with him.

At the Stop and Shop in the center of town, residents were talking about the shooting, but no one knew Ashley or his family.

Pat Pickett, 68, a 27-year resident of Partlow said her grandson played football with Ashley at Spotsylvania High School.

She said her grandson called Ashley "a nice boy, he was just like any other football player. He said he wasn't a troublemaker."

"Everybody's just kind of sad. I feel bad for the boy, I feel bad for his family, and I feel bad for the family who lost their father and husband," Pickett said.

The gathering place in the middle of town is about five miles from the Ashley family's stone and timber house, complete with a picnic table on the lawn amid expansive woods.

No one answered the door at the house on Saturday morning. Hours later, a man in a white pickup truck was parked in the driveway and posting no trespassing signs.

Neighbors said they did not know the family and declined to comment.

Wonderful to see nobody even considers whether this person had undiagnosed mental issues or not. As long as the vast majority walk around with their head up their ass this kind of situation will keep happening. I have to admit that maybe the reactions of the people who knew him aren't completely biased but it's just the attitude of a lot of commenters here that worries me.

What he did was deplorable and whilst any issue he had himself wouldn't really be an 'excuse' as such it would be an indication of diminished responsibility.

it's pretty clear why family/friends try to stick up for a loved one when they do something like this. it is the only way they can keep their sanity. obviously the general public sees this guy for what he truly is, but imagine if you had to live with him every day and not see the signs(if there were any). it is probably the most devastating thing possible to realize that the person you think you know the most (spouse/family member/friend) would be capable of something like this.

the rationalization is a necessary defense mechanism for the people left to answer for the killer.

And here I thought HuffPost viewers were enlightened... I call this the failure of the police, courts, college, and mental health systems to identify this kid and get him off the streets...

Just like they failed to do with Jared Loughner...

Yea, they're always nice until they kill someone. Like the Craigslist killer. Makes you think though. How nice is that nice guy you know?
09:52 PM on 12/12/2011
That nice guy you know is probably just a nice guy. Paranoia's not particularly helpful to anybody.

Well, duh, if he had been the kind of person who goes on murderous sprees before last week, he bloody well would have been caught before last week, now wouldn't he?

Bull[cough]$hite...

Why is it everyone psychopath gets some 'friend' or 'family' member that has to weigh in with the 'HE never did anything to anyone'..

Always makes them sound like the slow wheel on the short bus.

Your so right, he waited till the right moment to vent his rage and kill. As if he had a right, becasue he is a white American, and he can do as he pleases, as in "Entittlement", just because his mom and Dad, are White. He's so dissapointed he didn't get his way.

I think it's a knee jerk reaction - a kind of testimonial of sorts to let people know that they didn't raise this kid to do these things.
02:09 PM on 12/12/2011
well I highly doubt people who played football with him in HS 4 years prior or a guy who hadn't seen him in two years or a guy who graduated HS and had "a couple of advanced classes" with him are exactly going to say "yep, I saw this coming" People can change a lot in 4 years espeicially after high school. What did they expect these practical strangers to say about it?
12:28 PM on 12/12/2011
ok he was nice.but he took innocent lives.i guess nice have a new definition.im will be nice and kill my boss
03:12 PM on 12/12/2011
no he was not nice before either, he was hiding his rage, now you could say he was very good at cammaflaging, till he broke. What does nice mean anyway? So people disscriminate, so is that nice too, because they are nice too you? hmmm
06:35 PM on 12/12/2011
ok i respect your point of view.but in the news thats what they said he was a nice friendly person.obviously something else was going on in this kid mind.and to bad he didnt get the right help he needed.

friendly?really? what is up with white kids shooting up schools? seriously. and before you get all into your feelings and call me racist, your opinion is duly noted and filed under, don't really give a carp.
12:59 PM on 12/12/2011
Whites make up a vast majority of the US population. Among college students, the percentage is even bigger. Around 70% of college students are white.

Therefore, we would expect the vast majority of school shootings to be from white students.

What you should be giving a carp about is why blacks are responsible for an inordinate number of non school related shootings despite being a tiny minority (12.6%).
03:43 PM on 12/12/2011
Oh you just got trolled, hooked and baited into getting upset about a racial topic and then acting on your underlying desire to spout off a negative statistics about "blacks".

Totally could've ignored it as the poster pointed out and just called him out for saying something racist, but you had to be equally racist in defense (people keeping track of racially focused statistics is a key giveaway for most neutral observers when calling it out like I am now).

Don't feed the trolls. Look at ickymcpooh's post for a solid example.

I dont know why kids are so angry and violent nowdays. But when you say white kids as if no other race of kids shot guns at people is asking for it.You are a race baiter and you can file that any where you want.

I don't think the people who were interviewed are making excuses for this man. They were asked about their experiences with him and gave honest answers. His actions were/are inexcusable and horrific and these people know that.

A nice and friendly cop killer. What a waste of life. I feel for the family of the policeman who got killed, not for the murderer, but I have to say, the killer saved us some money. Everybody who kills someone else, should kill themselves, its good for our bankrupt nation, we could save some money.

It is just nauseating to read about people making excuses for these killers.

Didn't this 'so-called nice friendly' guy blow a cop way? I would like for his defenders to tell that cops family how nice and friendly the killer was. See how far that gets them.
02:15 PM on 12/12/2011
They kind of gloss over it, but when you look at the people that are saying he was "nice" and "friendly" most hadn't seen him since HS and if he's 22 that was at least 4 years ago. The other guy basically said he hadn't seen him in two years and only knows things about him through Facebooks. None of these people they interviewed seem to have first hand knoweldge. None of them were close to him, so to me, the article is even more insulting due to the fact that they interviewed anyone who had ever crossed paths with him to get a quote and then write an article on the fact that he was "nice" and "Friendly". This article should have been about not knowing a motive, and then maybe describing oh I don't know, the VICTIM and their accomplishments? Who gives a crap what some kid who had advanced classes with the shooter FOUR years ago? Or what a one time teammate had to say about him FOUR years ago!

If he was a "Bible" reader as they claim, it didn't stop him from doing what the Bible is known for "Thou shalt not kill" and especially thyself...so much for reading the Bible.

Maybe he thought the cop was a Caananite. Or had gathered sticks on Saturday. Or was wearing blended fabrics. Or had shaved his beard. Or eaten shellfish. The same chapter of the Bible that says "thou shalt not murder" recommends death for all those offenses.
