Obama 2012 Gaining Support From Democrats

KEN THOMAS   12/11/11 05:19 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — After a dreary summer marred by the fight over government borrowing, rank-and-file Democrats say they are growing more optimistic about President Barack Obama's political prospects in 2012. They cite his tougher, more populist tone and what they view as a chaotic primary fight among Republicans.

Many Democrats acknowledged that high unemployment and economic uncertainty create formidable obstacles for the incumbent. But interviews with more than a dozen Democratic activists across the nation found support for Obama's more forceful message against GOP lawmakers and interest in rebutting the presidential candidates.

Several pointed to Obama's speech last week in Kansas, where he argued that the middle class had been under duress for the past decade and economic policies must give everyone a "fair shot and a fair share."

"He didn't have his voice and we didn't have our voice," said David Leland, an attorney in Columbus, Ohio, and former state party chairman. "But now he has successfully turned that particular corner and most people are much more enthusiastic and much more fired up about it."

Added Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat: "What he said in Kansas brought us back down to basics." Durbin told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that "this is a make-or-break moment for the middle class in America."

Entering 2012, Obama faces a set of economic numbers that have improved but that no incumbent would relish: unemployment of 8.6 percent in November, down from 9 percent in October; consumer confidence of 56, well below the level where a president typically gets re-elected; and an economy that has created 100,000 or more jobs five months in a row – the first time that has happened since April 2006.

Politically, Obama's approval rating, as measured by Gallup, has been in the low 40s during the fall and hasn't topped 50 percent since last May. Polls typically show about three-quarters of voters view the nation on the wrong track. Republicans have blamed Obama for high unemployment and rising debt, contending that his policies have failed to lift America from recession.

"No amount of rhetoric or new slogans is going to change this president's record," said Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer. "On issue after issue – from job creation to a $15 trillion debt, voters are ready to change direction because of the president's failed promises and policies."

Nonetheless, a month before the first vote in the GOP nominating race, many Democrats said they were encouraged by the topsy-turvy contest. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have been battling for the lead while businessman Herman Cain, who's now dropped out, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry stumbled after rising in polls.

"Obama has not been everything I've wanted him to be but he's sure a heck of a lot better than any of the Republicans who have raised their hands," said Tom Bordeaux, a Democrat and former Georgia legislator who was recently elected to an alderman seat in Savannah, Ga.

Mary Gail Gwaltney, a member of the Democratic National Committee from Las Cruces, N.M., said she felt stronger about Obama now "because I'm looking at the other party's field and they don't have a strong candidate."

Democrats, who have targeted Romney through the airwaves, indicated that they would give Gingrich similar treatment, labeling the former Georgia congressman the "original tea partier" in a Web video released Sunday by the Democratic National Committee that highlighted his stances on Medicare, Social Security and taxes.

As Obama confronts the GOP field, many Democratic stalwarts said the president's tone and message will be pivotal.

Many activists said they were unhappy with Obama's attempt to reach concessions with Republicans last summer during summer negotiations over the government's borrowing limit. But they said they were reassured when he proposed a jobs bill in September and hit the road trying to sell the package.

Only one provision has been enacted, tax incentives to encourage companies to hire unemployed veterans. Still, many party organizers said Obama's fight with congressional Republicans over payroll tax cuts, unemployment benefits and efforts to force the wealthy to pay more in taxes would help their cause.

"He has to be seen as a champion for the average person," said George Nee, president of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO. "I think that's where his heart is – that's what he believes – but he's been too tentative in showing it. I guess in the labor movement, we come from the perspective that we've got to know where you are."

Rob Tully, a former Iowa Democratic party chairman who supported John Edwards in the 2008 Iowa caucuses, said that last summer many of his party allies shared his sense of frustration that Obama "was not engaging in the fight" with Republicans. But he said Obama's more populist tone and attention to bread-and-butter issues for middle-class voters has resonated with him.

"I was frustrated with him but I have come full circle, back to the fold," Tully said.

Beyond the message, many activists said Obama's organizational efforts should help their cause. The campaign has been recruiting tens of thousands of volunteers to help with the re-election campaign. Democrats contend Obama will have a yearlong head start over the Republican nominee and his organization should outpace that of his eventual rival.

"He understands clearly that there's a race and some of the things that worked for him in the election aren't going to work this time," said Judy Kennedy, a DNC member from Phoenix, referring to the 2008 race.

Kennedy said she was deeply concerned about Obama's chances over the summer but came away reassured after meeting with campaign officials in Chicago last September. "My feelings about it have improved dramatically over the last few months."

Debbie Dingell, a DNC member and the wife of Michigan Rep. John Dingell, said many Democrats long have recognized the headwinds facing them next year and are working to organize voters in the most effective way.

"It's going to be a tough year and because of that, they're not kidding themselves that this isn't going to be challenging and they're prepared for a tough fight," she said.

How can you tell when a Republican bagger is trying disguise themselves as a "disgruntled Democrat"? When they compare President Obama to Jimmy Carter. They selectively forget that HW was so bad he didn't get a 2nd term either.
08:48 AM on 12/14/2011
Comparing Obama to Carter is an accurate comparison as it pertains to what the two of them have done to the American psyche.

As to HWB, he didn't get a second term because he lied about not raising taxes, when the House and Senate were then controlled by the Democrats.

Sean Spicer fails to say that much debt that is attributed to Obama is the two wars that Bush & Co (CEO-Dick Cheney) forgot to put in the budget.

It fails to account for the Bush tax cuts that they left off the books also.

Sean may be spinning to himself but everyone knows he is a proponent of lies

Get off you soap box and tell the truth.

A view from across the pond : May I wish your President every success with his campaign for another four year term, I fail to see how one could not agree with his policies on EQUALITY, DEMOCRACY, and giving the man in the street a FAIR DEAL, unlike the T/Republicans who panda to big business, and are only out for themselves and NOT for the benefit of the common man, in any event they don't have any credible policies to offer, but just stab each other in the back and make gaffe after gaffe.
Your economy like all of the Western World will take years to fix.

I fail to see how a country who still worships and gives welfare to a formerly brutal monarchy has any reason to comment on our political concerns.

I mean shouldn't you be watching what the Homely/Gawdy/Tacky Royal family is doing. And dont forget to give them your tax dollars, so that they can keep themselves in ridiculous clothes and Captain Crunch Hats.

To "to a formerly brutal monarchy" I don't know to who you refer, our Royal family gives our country much more than they cost, I equally do not understand how the American public give hard earned dollars to Politicians who use it for any reason they care, and not in the interests of the great good of the American people.
We have very strict Election law which prevent individuals or Corporations donating more than $7500 with having to disclose it and to which Party it was donated to.

Gaining "support" from his base isn't going to get him re-elected. In fact, Obama now trails both Gingrich and Romney in the most recent polls at 48 to 43 (with a margin of error of less than 3%). And in ALL of the polls, Obama has been steadily losing ground amongst everyone other than his core. If it continues, and that seems very likely given the current state of the economy, employment, spending deficits, national debt, etc., Obama can begin packing his bags long before the election takes place. And it doesn't seem that there is anything to turn this downward slide around.

If either one of the present debating candidates become President you can bet your last pair of socks the Supreme Court will get another Roberts or Scalia .

When that happens the Preamble of the Constitution will be changed from "Promote the General Welfare" to "Promote the Corporate Welfare" .

A WISE WISE MAN. WE NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY WE PACKAGE OUR MESSAGES. WE NEED TO PUT OUR POTUS ACCOMPLISHMENTS FRONT AND CENTER! We know and believe in our President but we must package the product better for the American people. The Right has a very flawed destructive product to offer the American people but their marketers and packaging is always done as if their product is flawless and 100 percent solid gold! Let's do it all the way right! We MUST start working smarter to create the package that speaks volumes and can't be beat! We have some of the greatest minds right here...Let's do this together...all suggestions are welcome, let's bring everything to the table for OBAMA/BIDEN N 2012... Losing is NOT an Option!

Jasmineflowers, not only whatever facts you are basing your views on wrong, or all screwed up, you are simply regurgitating a lot of right wing talking points that are absolutely nothing but false spin. . I won't even begin to entertain you and any of your other misconstrued ideas. Now we can agree to disagree as my position is very strongly and unshakably Pro Prez. Obama and just as strongly Anti This GOP and the far Right Wing of which I'm sure you fall somewhere in between. That said, you are welcome to continue posting with awareness that there is not a chance in hell that my mind will be changed. "sweetie~" :0)

Why not TX, the Righties do it all the time and theirs are all lies! I am just taking the good from the Right and using it to enhance what is already a great and real asset. Just improving the marketing / messaging. I admit the Righties are and have always been the best at messaging and packaging. Anyone who can continuously package big time Certifiable BS and sell it as Solid Gold Prime Time Stock and turn profits and gain power for decades are the ones to steal tips from. Hey I openly give them full credit, props and kudos even. Live and learn:) We'll see who has the last laugh N 2012

I want to apologize to President Obama. But first, some background.

I found out three weeks ago I have cancer. I'm 49 years old, have been married for almost 20 years and have two kids. My husband has his own small computer business, and I run a small nonprofit in the San Fernando Valley.

Fortunately for me, I've been saved by the federal government's Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan, something I had never heard of before needing it. It's part of President Obama's healthcare plan, one of the things that has already kicked in, and it guarantees access to insurance for U.S. citizens with preexisting conditions who have been uninsured for at least six months.

Which brings me to my apology. I was pretty mad at Obama before I learned about this new insurance plan. I had changed my registration from Democrat to Independent, and I had blacked out the top of the "h" on my Obama bumper sticker, so that it read, "Got nope" instead of "got hope."

So this is my public apology. I'm sorry I didn't do enough of my own research to find out what promises the president has made good on. I'm sorry I didn't realize that he really has stood up for me and my family, and for so many others like us. I'm getting a new bumper sticker to cover the one that says "Got nope."

It will say "ObamaCares."

Thank you for your comment.
My young adult daughter was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. A very sad turn of events for her, and us, her family. However, we are so delighted that because of HCR and the provision to allow young adults to stay on their parents health insurance till they are 26, we will not be utterly drowning in debt because of this terrible turn of events.

I hope you will reflect this blessing by voting for president Obama and for those like your daughter.

That pre-existing condition element is, indeed, huge... I note that, historically, medical costs have been the reason for a significant percentage of personal bankruptcy filings.. and of course, as we all know, the uninsured charges by the heatlhcare system are signifciantly greater than the "accepted for payment" charges that those of us have.

I too have a "pre-existing condition" and have followed this change in our core healthcare codes with great interest. Good luck with your medical issues, but at least paying for care is not adding to your stress.

The GOP so far has no one to put up against Obama but a used up warrior and an unseasoned half-term governor not likely to overtake a highly intelligent President with four years of experience

A new Fox News poll that says most voters think Obama will win the 2012 election had Gretchen Carlson flustered and uncomprehending. Even with some Republican bias, the poll only confirms what the rest of us see as obvious: a weak Republican field makes Obama's re-election far more likely than it ought to be with this very weak economy.

Assuming that laughable statement is true and that the people who hate and despise the Democrats as profoundly as the most extreme Republican constitute the base of that party who paid the price of not turning up for the midterms? I believe Obama is still president and given the Republican field is likely to remain so.

Cut you a break?

In what way?

The same way Obama took when he ignored the Constitution--just as Bush did before him when he took us into two illegal wars and cost us the good will of the world with his torture and drone attacks on civilians?

What break? The one that allows you to pick and choose what laws we live under. For someone with your name, I'd think you'd want fair treatment for all of us in all laws--especially our Bill of Rights!

How do you feel about his assuming the powers in to the presidency (that the next guy can use, too) to name any one of us an enemy of the state, hunt us down and eliminate us? For a Constitutional Law Professor, he either has no real knowledge of, or respect for, the document.
