Tim Tebow, Broncos Beat Bears 13-10 In OT: Denver Wins 6th Straight (VIDEO)

By ARNIE STAPLETON   12/11/11 08:30 PM ET   AP

DENVER -- Tim Tebow did it again. Matt Prater's 51-yard field goal 6 1/2 minutes into overtime gave the Broncos a 13-10 win over the stunned Chicago Bears on Sunday. Prater's 59-yarder with 3 seconds left in regulation tied the score after Tebow led another rally.

It was Denver's sixth straight win, and half of them have come in OT since Tebow, dubbed the "Mile High Messiah," was promoted to starter.

This one put the Broncos in sole possession of first place in the AFC West following Oakland's 46-16 drubbing at Green Bay.

After failing to score on their first dozen possessions, the Broncos (8-5) erased a 10-0 deficit in the final 2:08 of regulation.

Tebow hit Demaryius Thomas with a 10-yard TD pass, then got the ball back with 53 seconds left after Marion Barber saved Denver precious time by going out of bounds when the Bears were trying to run out the clock.

Tebow drove the Broncos 39 yards for Prater's kick, which he rocketed through the uprights.

The Bears (7-6) won the toss in overtime and quickly got into field goal range before Barber, who rushed for 108 yards but will be remembered for his two late mistakes, coughed up the football at the Broncos 34 and Elvis Dumervil recovered.

Denver was out of timeouts after Thomas' touchdown and had to try an onside kick, which the Broncos couldn't recover. But on second down after the two-minute warning, Barber cut outside and was pushed out, stopping the clock.

The Bears would have to punt, and Tebow got the ball back at his 20 and went to work, not needing to go far with Prater's strong leg in the thin air.

Tebow, who also led the Broncos to wins in OT at Miami and San Diego since his promotion over Kyle Orton in October, ran 12 times for 49 yards and completed 21 of 40 passes for a season-best 236 yards.

He was intercepted once, fumbled the ball away on another play and was sacked five times by Brian Urlacher & Co., who couldn't seal the win despite their stout defense.

The Bears, whose playoff hopes are faltering, are 0-3 since Caleb Hanie replaced an injured Jay Cutler, the former Broncos QB who has a broken thumb on his throwing hand and is out indefinitely.

Hanie completed 12 of 19 passes for 115 yards and was sacked four times.

The beat-up Bears also were without top running back Matt Forte, who's out indefinitely with a knee injury, depriving Chicago of the league's leader in yards from scrimmage (1,487) and its third-leading rusher (997).

His replacement, Barber, broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run.

The Bears ran just one play in Broncos territory – Hanie's pass to Kahlil Bell from the 48 that lost 5 yards in the first half – until Devin Hester returned the game's 12th punt 26 yards to midfield midway through the third.

With safeties Brian Dawkins (neck) and David Bruton (calf) sidelined, the Broncos were left with rookies Quinton Carter and Raheem Moore, and both of them missed the tackle on Barber's TD.

Cornerback Andre' Goodman sustained a concussion three plays before Barber scored.

Barber gained 16 yards on a screen pass from Hanie on third-and-27 on the final play of the third quarter. After the break, coach Lovie Smith sent Robbie Gould out for a 57-yard field goal attempt.

No Bears kicker had ever made it from that far.

Gould, whose previous long was from 54 yards last year at Detroit, nailed it with lots of room to spare, giving the Bears a 10-0 lead.

He would be outdone by Prater.

It is suppose to be that the defense was tremendous, but there is the intangible "phenomenon Tebow". I guess that deserves discussion about what the Broncos record would have Kyle Orton continued to play. It looked like a losing team with Orton. The D is great, but Tebow say what someone should get some credit for the 7-1. QB is usually judged by victory and defeat plain and simple. The numbers may not be there but the most important. Now this could be the Trent Dilfer argument again, but these reimbursements fourth quarter just make the discussion more interesting.anyway, for more news, we can visit http://www.tebowformvp.com/... thanx

Cut the god squad crap Tim. I gave up religion thirty years ago because of people like you. Go pray in the corner to your god quietly with dignity but not on national TV in front of me. Seeing someone pray is NOT why I watch NFL. Didn't Jesus tell the parable about the guy preaching for the whole world to see and pray for the right reasons?

Good for Tebow, but Prater deserves a lot of credit as well. Time to get off Tebow's back and let him play. He is a good QB and fun to watch. What else do you want?

Interesting to read that liberals are even mentioned in an article on Tim Tebow being a quaterback who likes religion...Guess we will be reading that Obama is responsible for Tebowmania,

Tebow 7-1 this year as a starter for the Broncos.

Jamarcus Russel 7-18 in three seasons.

Russell was picked #1 overall
Tebow picked late first round to everyone's surprise.

Tebow still in the league and turning heads everywhere.
Russell out of the league

That says it all.

I find it very strange how Tim Tebow is being criticised by the liberal media for taking a knee on the field but Reggie White was praised for holding prayer circles after the game.

Why do you think that is???
10:37 PM on 12/13/2011
Because Reggie wasn't a phony.

XLT has the inside scoop on Tebow. Let's hear it, dude. Tebow has been taking all that money from his charities and using it for his own personal gain, like flying himself to see the kids these charities help?! I knew it. Phony!

I think that Matt Prater's clutch place kicking (59 yards?!) was actually much more of a factor than Tebow's field leadership and on-field performance, which if anything was mediocre. "Tebow, who also led the Broncos to wins in OT at Miami and San Diego since his promotion over Kyle Orton in October, ran 12 times for 49 yards and completed 21 of 40 passes for a season-best 236 yards. He was intercepted once, fumbled the ball away on another play and was sacked five times by Brian Urlacher & Co., who couldn't seal the win despite their stout defense.'

Not to deminish the kicker...but he is a kicker. A quarterback has a much larger roll to play. If you doudt what a quarterback can do, if the record with Tebow vs. without Tebow hasn't convinced you look at the Indianapolis Colts.

The kicker did well. But let's not underestimate the importance of a Quarterback. A kicker can score every point of every game in a season...The Quarterback is still a much more valuable player...

Seriously though, if it wasn't for his garish display of his religion, nobody would care about this guy.

I am just loving the comments from the left. They just cannot hide their derision for Tebow SIMPLY because he is a Ch ris tian!! I always love seeing the left wing big ot ry on display!!!

And it came to be that the man named Brady walked in the wilderness for 7 off days and 7 off nights and came upon a burning pile of game tape and the tape spoke to him and sayeth.....Brady....Brady....
And Brady was sorely afraid and cowered .Who art though he asked?
And the tape sayeth unto him....... I am Belichick.
What doth thou wanteth of me mighty Belichik Brady asked.
And the mighty Belichik told Brady to hew 7 tablets out of stone with his own hands and once this was done Belichik burned all sorts of wondrous figures and words into the stone .
When he was finished Brady gazed in awe at the tablets and asked Belichik what his will was .....
Belichick replied with a cold voice....taketh these plays to the huddle and along with thine team mates kick bronco ass .
And so was it written and so it was done.

You can't always go by defensive yards. Teams with great offenses, especially offenses that score quickly, often give up more defensive yards simply due to the fact that the other team gets more possessions.
03:39 PM on 12/12/2011
Just mho, but I think the games are fixed.

Tebow is a very devoted Christian, he actually preaches in a way Jesus would have done. He is very humble and could care less about the NFL. Tim is not involved...but.
Since the Broncos won a couple with Tebow leading, there became a great storyline for the NFL.
The world is supposed to end in 2012. Religion is going to be HUGE in 2012. I see and I expect the NFL sees a great marketing opportunity in young Tebow and the Broncos.

It just seems too likely that such storylines keep happening in the NFL at exactly the right time.
(teams wanting a new stadium always seem to have great seasons right before a bond issuse for the stadiums is going too vote, ect...)
just sayin...

If you're right about the games being fixed, I hope the Bears at least made some good money off that one. Once they went up 10-0 they pretty much laid down on the field and let the Broncos have their way. Marion Barber probably got paid the most; his run out of bounds with under 2 minutes left in regulation is a play a high schooler wouldn't have made. In case you weren't 100 percent certain he was paid to make that move, he sealed it with the OT fumble. But the rest of the team had to have been in on the deal too. The "prevent nothing" defense they played in the 4th quarter and OT was just as bad as Barber's gaffes. Before the Bears backed their Safeties 25 yards off the line of scrimmage Tebow was worse than Hanie! And now he's a "hero" again...

i don't understand at all why so many make such an uproar because the guy is a person of faith when it is but part of what makes him the person he is. would they rather he was like so many others that are felons, drug abusers, drunks, bling kings, animal abusers, dead beat dads, etc. i for one am glad to see someone on the field who isn't like what we've come to expect as the norm from our players. push comes to shove, the man is by far the better role model than what we've come to expect from then nfl or any professional sport for that matter. for me it doesn't matter if he were buddhist, jewish or christian, he is at the end of the day a rare positive role model and one that more in the nfl should take their cues from imho. character matters both on and off the field, enough said.

He is a young QB who is winning while learning...

Steve Young was 3-16 in his first 19 starts and then sat behind Montana for 2/3 years before taking over the 49ers.

Peyton Manning was 3-13 in his first year as a starter....

I can go on...ALL YOUNG QB'S LOOK LOST FOR A WHILE!!!

In this case the Broncos are winning while he is learning...

Bronco's kicker makes a 59 yard field goal, let me say that again 59 YARD FIELD GOAL, to tie the game and 51 yarder in the OT to win and all we hear is about Tebow! If he was that good he would have bring his team closer to SURE field goal attempt as oppose to a, once in a life time 59 yard field goal.

Prater is NOW the most accurate kicker of FG's over 50 yards in NFL history...so I'm not so sure it was a once in a lifetime kick....his 51 yarder would have made it from that distance as well...

Conditions at Mile High are generally excellent for kickers; thin air, not much wind. Note that Robbie Gould, who has attempted relatively few 50-yarders in his career, kicked a Bears' franchise record 57-yarder in the same game. That kick, according to Tony Siragusa, who was watching it from the end zone, hit the net. It would have been good from 65. Prater kicked a 70-yarder in practice. Gould popped a couple of kickoffs out of the end zone. It was a good day for kickers, in probably the most kicker-friendly stadium in the league.

maybe once in a life time is a little exaggeration but 59yd FG's are not that common around the league and yes maybe it has to do with thin air up there or maybe because of the altitude god can hear Tebow's prayer a little more clear whatever it is they didn't win that game based on Tebow's football skills.
I don't have anything against the guy, seems like an all around nice guy with a good attitude but the media hype is getting rather annoying.
we'll see about his late-game "heroics" next week.
