The Best iPhone Games Of 2011 Ranked By Apple (PICTURES)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 12/12/11 02:09 PM ET   Updated: 12/12/11 02:09 PM ET

Apple has announced its picks for a few good apps.

As part of its annual App Store Rewind series, Apple has highlighted the best releases and top sellers across six categories -- music, movies, TV shows, apps, books and podcasts.

Of the more than 500,000 iPhone apps in the iTunes Store, the Cupertino company has showcased just over 100 iPhone apps that Apple loves best. They range from DJ apps and medical imaging apps to photo editors and news readers. Apps have become a booming business for Apple, which said in October that users download over 1 billion apps each and have downloaded more than 18 million apps in total

In addition to presenting the top apps in education, business and weather, among other genres, Apple shone a spotlight on iPhone games. It named both an iPhone app of the year, Instagram, and an iPhone game of the year: Tiny Tower, a free game Apple said "taps our inner Donald Trump," took the top spot as Apple's favorite iPhone game.

Seven other games earned nods from Apple, and we've presented them in the slideshow below. See the iTunes Store for the complete App Store Rewind 2011 rankings, then take a look at the 13 most popular free iPhone apps of the year.

Apple awarded Tiny Tower (free) the distinguished title of iPhone "Game of the Year."

"This addictive app taps our inner Donald Trump, as we grow an economic empire by building towers and populating them with businesses and bitizens. We find its marriage of time management and social gameplay irresistible," Apple wrote of Tiny Tower.

Users tend to agree: The app has earned a rating of four-and-a-half stars out of five from over 14,000 reviewers on iTunes, though the app hasn't cracked Apple's list of the top 30 free apps.

One reviewer said downloading Tiny Tower was the "best decision ever."

I really like Tiny Tower, but I also highly recommend a brand new free iPhone app called ShakyPlanet. You can collect ShakyGlobes and other eCollectibles with ShakyPlanet. Each one plays music and animates when you tap or shake them. They are really cool and fun - part game, part music, and you "own" each one you download, even if you lose your phone! ShakyPlanet has beautiful free holiday ShakyGlobes in its store right now that really bring you back to the good old days! I also like to collect them when I travel - they have free ShakyGlobes for many different cities, and you have to actually be in that location to be able to download them, which makes them all the more special. It's also easy to post them to Facebook or Twitter and send them by email to share your experiences with your family and friends!

Usually one of the first things I do when I buy a new computeris delete all of the games. I never play them so why waste the space on my hard drive.

The obvious question is why the hell did you feel a need to comment then?

Some people are just need to feel holier-than-thou so they pretend like playing video games is a huge waste of time, the problem is that too many of these people end up spending that time getting fat in front of a TV.

Oh good. Because silly me..I thought phones were for making phone calls. I wonder how the quality of phone calls stack up amongst the different phones. Now that would be useful information.

You seem to be right. They are a distraction from other issues.

I have the Tiny Tower app and it is probably the most fun real-time game I have ever played. It doesn't have the downside of Farmville; an alternative currency practically impossible to acquire without real money. I highly reccommend this game because it's fun for all ages and very addictive.

Sarcasm?
if it is then there really is no reason to be
they're giving credit to the great developers of the amazing games they have created
why shouldn't they give their opinion?

Um, I'm not a math major, but 1 billion each should be less than 18 million total downloads.
