Obama Campaign Outlines Five Paths To Reelection

Obama Maps

WASHINGTON -- At a briefing with reporters on Tuesday morning, top officials in the Obama campaign outlined five distinct paths that they can pursue to help the president win reelection.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, chief strategist David Axelrod and campaign manager Jim Messina pledged to take the same numbers-based approach to the 2012 campaign that former campaign manager David Plouffe famously used in 2008. And in surveying the electoral map, they have gamed out several regional strategies to help them clear the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) earned a total of 251 electoral votes in 2004, but due to redistricting, the states he won now carry a total of 246 electoral votes. Assuming the president is able to hold on to the states Kerry carried -- a not entirely risk-free assumption -- the campaign could try to follow what Axelrod and Messina are calling the "West Path." If Obama wins Colorado (and its nine electoral votes), New Mexico (five) and Nevada (six) and adds them to Kerry's 246 electoral votes, he would have 266. Add in the six electoral votes from Iowa, where Obama has been leading the polls (but Republicans have been making voter registration gains), and he'd have 272.

The second path for Obama to pursue is the "Florida Path," which would mean winning the Sunshine state and its 29 electoral votes. That total added to Kerry's 246 electoral votes would equal 275.

The third path is the "South Path," which involves winning North Carolina (and its 15 electoral votes) and Virginia (13) to Kerry's total to reach 274.

The fourth path is the "Midwest Path" which involves adding Ohio (and its 18 electoral votes) and Iowa (with its six) to Kerry's total to get to 270 on the nose.

Finally, there is the "expansion path," which has the president losing critical states but still winning the election by bringing others in the fold. Under this scenario, the reelection campaign doesn't hold on to Kerry's wins in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, losing their 20 and four electoral votes respectively. He also fails to win Ohio and Florida, both of which he won in 2008. But by re-winning Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and adding Arizona (with its 11 votes), a perhaps more likely proposition than it was in 2008 when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was running, Obama gets to 272.

Of course, the reelection team isn't tied to a pursuit of one of these paths over the other. And certainly the identity of the nominee who eventually emerges from the GOP primary will affect the campaign's strategy in the months ahead.

In a separate briefing with reporters last week, Axelrod said that the idea of someone with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's history in private equity "is going to be a strong compelling candidate in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania is just not true." He conceded, for good measure, that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich would have "less to explain" to those Rust Belt voters. But Romney would play well in a state like Michigan, where he grew up and his father served as governor. None of the Obama campaign's five potential paths to victory took the prospect of losing Michigan and its 16 electoral votes into account.

The point, in the end, is that the map is malleable. But the Obama campaign does have more conceivable paths to victory than conventional wisdom would suggest.

This article was updated to further reflect differences between the 2004 and 2012 electoral maps.

If these are the five routes that his campaign is discussing, there are probably at least five that they are not. That would be well advised since reelection will be much tougher than his first go-round.

If he had prosecuted the Bushmen and women, set up an economic team that wasn't part of the financial-deregulation gang, not taken single payer off the table, and drew up some regulations with teeth--when he had majorities in the House and Senate--he wouldn't be scrambling to try to get back the people he abandoned in his quest to placate the depraved right wing.

I am an Obama supporter, but what you suggest is so far to the left that had Obama pursued such ideas no mainstream group could support his reelection. Prosecuting people in the Bush Administration for "war crimes" was/is a losing proposition. The tragedy of the whole Iraq fiasco is that many people from both parties went along with it. Yes, we tortured people. You know what? The average American supports us having done that. They believe that's why we beat the terrorists. The liberal wing of the democratic party is not mainstream America. Its ridiculous to pretend you could govern the country with policies that only appease this group.

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

Every vote, everywhere, would be politically relevant and equal in presidential elections.

When the bill is enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes-- enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538), all the electoral votes from the enacting states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and DC.

The bill uses the power given to each state by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution to change how they award their electoral votes for president.

In Gallup polls since 1944, only about 20% of the public has supported the current system of awarding all of a state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each separate state (with about 70% opposed and about 10% undecided). Support for a national popular vote is strong among Republicans, Democrats, and Independent voters, as well as every demographic group in virtually every state surveyed in recent polls.

The bill has passed 31 state legislative chambers in 21 small, medium-small, medium, and large states. The bill has been enacted by 9 jurisdictions possessing 132 electoral votes -- 49% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.

Whether in Japan, Europe, or North America, we are now seeing the consequences of a world devoid of leaders. Nowhere can you find a single prominent individual willing to blaze a new trail to economic success. Instead, all we get all around the world is: 'It's not my fault'. These are perilous times indeed.

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages” - Adam Smith - Wealth of Nations

It's doesn't take a PhD to know that when you take from those that produce without payment (ie: taxes) they produce less. When you give more without obligation or effort to those who don't produce or produce little - it doesn't encourage more production either. How hard is that. 50% of Americans don't pay taxes. 50% either work for the govt. or receive some form of govt. subsidy.

And we really believe it's the fault of the 1%? We blame WS for corruption. It's govt. policy that creates this mess, then they complain and find fault with others for the mess , and then pass more bad policy that makes the mess worse.

Come on folks - snark about blaming Bush but that doesn't solve the problems. More "fairness" doesn't fix the economy. Robbing from Peter to pay Paul does get Pauls vote but doesn't give Paul any incentive to do any addl. work. Societies for 2,000 years have tried "fairness" - Socialism, Communism, etc.. - all utopian dreams about "fairness" - yet Capitalism built the most powerful nation EVER. Now we what to tear it down because it's not "Fair".

Taxes aren't "produce without payment" you simply are looking for a more concrete type of payment than taxes paid offers. Our country would be much worse off if we didn't have the federal reserve running to keep our currency as stable as possible, and without the social security that so many people now depend upon for retirement (which I will admit, I something I very much disagree with). How strong would our economy be without the highway system put into place by Eisenhower (who RAISED taxes to pay for it)? Taxes provide so very much to every one of us, you seem to have a hard time realizing that.

We can debate all day long .. the fact is - my humble opinion - that we have created an entitlement society where everyone gets a trophy regardless of performance or production. Obama is trying to pull the upper class and lower classes closer to gather. It doesn't work. Those that produce produce less and those that don't produce has more incentive to continue not producing. How the hell do we have so many people in poverty after spending 15 trillion we don't have. 15,000,000,000,000 -

The democrats learn something very clever - how to legalize vote buying - VOTE FOR ME AND I"LL GIVE YOU SOMETHING - and it's kept the lower class in property for 40 years and the dems. want to keep them their - that's a big part of their base.

we can debate for years about economic theories -what works and doesn't work. When you rob from peter to pay paul you always get pauls vote and paul just want more and more to keep giving his vote. POLICY drives jobs out of the US. POLICY created the housing crisis. POLICY creates the corruption.

And infrastructure has been mostly paid for by municipal bonds for 50 years. Yes the
highway system was a great success. Roads and Military - good uses of tax payer money. Education is a mess and more money makes a bigger mess. Govt. agencies have no incentive to spend less, only to spend more.

The Rethuglitools seem to have received their checks from the Koch's again. The delay must have taught them a lesson about how tools are supposed to obey. Doesn't matter, Obama is going to win in a landslide, there are far fewer Tea Partiers these days.

"Why would the very rich become more richer and the working class humiliated?"

It's not all the "very rich" who wish to misuse the working-class. It is those with issues about wanting to keep themselves from being "working-class". Thus, it is a selective perception by *some* that the working-class is somehow beneath them. However, they fail to explain this while at the same time seek to exploit the working-class. It's a power thing for those who wish to exploit others for their own personal gain. There are *some* very rich who see the inequality for what it is and wish to balance that in a more equitable manner.
