Angelina Jolie's 'In The Land Of Blood And Honey' Ban Sought By Bosnian Serb War Victim

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina — The head of a group for Serbs held prisoner during Bosnia's 1992-95 war says Angelina Jolie's movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey" should be banned in the Serb-run part of the country.

Branislav Djukic of the Bosnian Serb Association of Camp Prisoners told the Associated Press on Tuesday that although he has seen only the trailer, he can already say the movie "is showing lies" and portraying Serbs as the only ones who raped women during the war.

Jolie's movie will be released in the U.S. on Dec. 23 and is a heavy drama about a Serb soldier who finds his ex-lover, a Muslim Bosnian woman, among sex slaves in a camp.

The movie was praised by a selected audience of 11 non-Serb war victim groups who saw it in Sarajevo earlier this month.

more then half of the babies born during the war, after etc... were a result in rape by serbs, it is sad to see Jolie make a love story out of such a brutal war.... would rather see a movie where they show what happened so that the serbs can see what kind of animals they really are for the most part. There isnt a time in history more then 100 years where the serbs dont start some sort of problem. I am not saying all serbs are bad but I would have to say the majority of them supported what was going on, Tito knew they were trouble and started moving many of them to todays country of macedonia. Just give it a little more time and they will start more problems.

I quote: "The movie was praised by a selected audience of 11 non-Serb war victim groups who saw it in Sarajevo earlier this month."

And I ask: Why has he one of the MANY Serb victim groups only seen a trailer and they've seen the movie? obviosly he is right the film is anti-Serb wich is,thanks to USA and Germany's fascism became normal and okay. Make a movie portraying any other people as evil? Well here is sa few tons of material: NATO. Hitler will seem like a little baby once you finish!

Dude, there have been thousands of movies depicting genocide (and the like) about different countries...including Canada, the US and Australia killing First Nations peoples. Or South Africa and movies about Aparteid.

If you are Serbian, and I'm guessing you are, accept that no country is perfect when it comes to the fair treatment of it's citizens and others. Yours is just one in a long stream of movies made about mass killings.

It's not about the movies it's about war victims not getting any justice AGAIN! The same thing happened to Serbs in WW2 and WW1. We were butchered and blamed, then when the regimee that started the agression fell, the truth came out but no side responsible wanted to accept it (Croats,Bosnians,Albanians and Germans have all commited genocides on Serbs).

Most importantly, the only genocide in WW2 that Germany and Austria havent apologised for is the ones on Serbs in Kragujevac. They killed civilians, high school children mainly, in an operation "100 Serbs for one dead German soldier and 50 Serbs for a woonded soldier". Since they still not only refuse to simply say "we are sorry" but they censor it and try to wash history to make kragujevac seem like a lot smaller "massacre" with movies such as this one and documentaries wich is why I support the old law from Tito's regimee to still forbid all Germanic people to enter the city and municipility of Kragujevac. Killing 5 000 (or more) man, woman and mainly children is a genocide, while Srebrenica killing of 5 000 Bosnian army trained men is a massacre, for those who know the term definitions.

As a Serb myself I understand where you are coming from, but that said, you haven't seen the film and most or none of us commenting have not. Jolie in her work with refugees has always been very compassionate towards all sides of the issues surrounding displaced people. I find it hard to believe she would have painted Serbs as totally evil. This sounds like a love story where love triumphs in one form or another-- set against horrible events and conditions. I would suggest we all wait and see before criticizing.

While most folks will assume this movie's prizes are about wanting its well-intentioned global movie star director to show up, Jolie and producer Graham King deserve respect for making this taut, intimate, moving Bosnian War drama on location in Budapest and Esztergom in 41 days, with no rehearsals.

Are you Serbian? If you are, you'll have to accept the face that your people perpetrated an ugly actrocity against hundreds of thousands of other people. It was Serbia that coined the term "ethnic cleansing". Facts can be unpleasant, but that doesn't stop them from being facts.

I won't go see it - too intense for me - scenes in it I could never deal with. But from what I am reading she could get an Academy Award for this.

I'm sure it will be too intense for me too, but I will go see it. I'll just look away.
Have you seen "Inglourious Basterds?" I've seen it twice in the theater, and then I bought the DVD, so I've seen it at home too, but I always look away when they do the scalping.

ScalpingNazi's does not bother me in the least. In this film, a child isslaughtered in front of his mother. No doubt very powerful and relevant to the film, but Gracie doesn't watch things that high on her SSRI-ratings scale.

She won't.
She might get nominated, but she will not get the award for a directorial debut.

Blood and Honey” proved the most gripping and memorable film I’ve seen in years. I have not stopped thinking about Jolie’s remarkably intelligent depiction of very complex characters and her truly vivid understanding of this war’s violence against women, in particular. A first-time writer and director, Jolie has produced a remarkable work of art that challenges us to see what we might prefer to forget, and she leaves us unable to leave her vivid, exquisitely drawn imagery behind

Wow, someone at HP really doesn't like Jolie. After actually watching it, the film has gotten nothing but rave reviews, including from some initial critics. But HP managed to find the one critical person who hasn't even seen the film and follow that store.
Well for those of you are are interested, Clint Eastwood did an interview with her in Interview magazine.

This is a film I definitely want to see. If it is as good as I imagine it will be, it will be very powerful.

It's not going to show the Serbs in a good light, that's a given. And I say that not because there's anything inherently wrong with Serbian people [Disclosure: I am 1/2 Croatian], but simply because this is a telling of an aspect of that war in which Serbs acted in evil ways, so there's no avoiding it.

People - this movie is not about the entire Serb-Bosnian war, not was it supposed to be. It's not meant to be a description of all the complexities of the war, or how it started or even why it started.
It is a movie. It is ONE story that is set with war as a backdrop, impacting the main plot.

This isn't a movie made from the write up of an Encyclopedia entry. She isn't saying that this is what defined the war. She picked a story and made a movie of it.

As 2nd generation Scot - I don't watch Braveheart and think - omg, it was all the British fault (okay, I do a little). But, I know it was the Scots as well. I am not looking for the movie to explain what the clearances were about or who caused them. I a watching a movie. Nothing more. Nothing less.

"She picked a story and made a movie of it." You are correct. She allegedly picked the story from the novel of James J. Braddock.

Exactly! The movie can stand on its own. However, it was also her intention to encourage people to talk about what happened not too long ago, in Europe.
If we're not careful, it can happen again. It's frightening how people who were living peacefully together could turn against each other and commit those atrocities.

LOL It's usually both at the same time.

It's fine to like her. It's fine not to like her. It's fine to have opinions, positive or negative. It's not fine to make up stories that one can't back up, and it's ridiculous to criticize a movie one hasn't seen.

Who is criticizing her movie? I see a lot of people who are not happy that she made a film about a story they think she is not qualified to tell and I see a lot of people who are huge fans of Jolie and are trying to shush those who are upset with her.

I am sitting on the sidelines watching both sides and I think both are behaving badly, but especially those Americans who are criticizing these women who were victims of rape. Shame on them.

In the end, Jolie is getting free publicity for her film. The whole thing has a very sour taste.
