Florida Family Association: History Of Protest Prior To 'All-American Muslim', Lowe's Boycott

Lowes

MITCH STACY   12/13/11 07:28 AM ET  AP

TAMPA, Fla. — The conservative group that got Lowe's to pull its ads from a reality TV show about American Muslims has been fighting for more than two decades against gay rights, strip clubs and most anything else that offends evangelical Christians.

The leader of the Florida Family Association is David Caton, a 55-year-old family values crusader who left an accounting career to found the group in 1987. He said the association has 35,000 members who were urged to email Lowe's to pressure the home improvement giant into dropping commercials during the TLC cable network show "All-American Muslim."

Lowes has drawn criticism for its decision from leaders in the Muslim community, celebrities and others suggesting a boycott of the store. Despite the growing backlash, the Mooresville, N.C.-based company said Monday it was planning to stick by its decision after the show became a "lightning rod for people to voice complaints from a variety of perspectives – political, social and otherwise."

Several politicians called the Florida Family Association a fringe hate group, a title Caton shrugged off, saying the group aims to "defend traditional American biblical values."

The show was not an accurate portrayal American Muslims, he said, because it doesn't disclose that "99.9 percent of Muslims agree with the principles of Sharia law," the restrictive religious code that Caton and others warn leads to the spread of Islamic extremism.

"This has all to do with the way this program was constructed to deliberately present Muslims in America as one flavor," he told The Associated Press. "It would be similar to the Learning Channel doing a report on `snakes are good family pets' without reporting that there are four in Florida that are venomous. ....For TLC to choose to profile five people as an aberration of the Islamic faith is propaganda."

TLC used to be called The Learning Channel.

"All-American Muslim," which premiered last month, chronicles the lives of five families who live in and near Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population. TLC spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said the show, which airs Mondays on TLC and ends its first season Jan. 8, has garnered a little over a million viewers per week.

Caton said he targeted the show because a recent poll on the group's website found that the spread of Islam in America was their No. 1 concern, more than homosexuality and pornography. About 1,800 votes were cast.

Florida Family Association claims more than 60 advertisers that it emailed have also stopped advertising on the show. So far, Lowe's is the only major company to confirm they pulled their ads.

Caton's group has also protested "Gay Days" at Walt Disney World.

Last year to no avail, Caton's group flooded the University of South Florida with 2,500 emails protesting a course on "queer theory." Recently the group targeted companies advertising on the teen show Degrassi on a Nickelodeon channel because it "promotes the transgender lifestyle and other inappropriate behavior to children," according to the Florida Family Association website.

The group's website appeared to be hacked Monday and posted a message that read: "No further proof is needed of the potential for vicious action then exactly what these folks are trying to do to this web site! The attack has been extremely mean spirited. ... Because of our real concern for the terrorism that is a way of life for some folks, we ourselves have become victims. Because we urge other to be vigilant we become the targets. Don't let it happen folks, take stand before it is too late."

The group also claims credit for helping get the show "The Playboy Club" canceled by NBC. The network, however, announced the show was being canceled less than 24 hours after the new series drew only 3.5 million people for its third episode.

The Florida Family Association, which is not affiliated with the older and larger American Family Association, reported more than $172,000 in donations last year, with $59,423 going toward salaries.

TLC is a TRAITOR to our country!!!! Shame on TLC for putting on the show All-American Muslims on American television, especially since 9-11. There is nothing American about these people. Does TLC not have any love or patriotism for this country? If TLC trying to convince Americans that these people love us and our country, then they are sadly mistaken. The Bible says, "Be aware and know who your enemies are." This is nothing more than a slap in the face to all of those who lost their lives on 9-11. Everyone who is a true American should boycott TLC.

David Caton, you are the biggest threat to Americans! You are the terrorist that good Christians, Americans and the world prays no more. The merchant to hatred, bullying and radicalism! You will not win! The good people in this country radiate too much light for your darkness to thrive. Your cancer craves what ultimately self-destroys. If you were a strong believer of the good biblical teachings, you would not be incredibly threatened by Islam. Your insecurities in your own agenda based faith has fed you the fear you have wished to spread! The Florida Family Association is a hate group, to have the audacity to call it an association that "upholds family values and traditions", is delusional and motivated by propaganda!

"The disbelievers (meaning non-muslims) are ever to you a clear enemy" (Qur'an 4:101 - depending on translation). Who is the threat? Just saying...

Wow, what a novel idea, hate mongers making a living out of spreading their hate. Go figure. Now take a good look at the Teabaggers. Same difference.

Here's the CEO of Lowe's address, phone#, and email. Let him know how you feel about his decision to pull ads from "All-American Muslims". I've been to the Statue of Liberty--and Ground Zero-- enough times to know this is wrong. And I teach enough Muslim kids to know they deserve the same rights as I do.

Alert, when any person or group states that they "defend traditional American biblical values." you take this as a warning to avoid them at any cost.

David Caton used to spend his time trying to get a local radio talk-show host named Neil Rogers taken off the air. Rogers, who passed away last year, was one of the first local media people to announce that he was gay; this was in response to Anita Bryant and her efforts to repeal a gay rights statute passed in Dade County in the mid-eighties.

Becaus Rogers' show featured humor and commentary that attacked the kind of fundamentalist, far-right attitudes that David Caton and the Florida Family Association represent, he was constantly censored and got fined by the FCC. Those of us who were fans miss his show very much and wonder what he would think of people like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum being considered as serious candidates for the presidency.

If he was still alive and he still had his show, he'd probably play one of his bits: "Oy!!"

A group with 35,000 members managed to get Lowe's to boycott a television show about Muslim Americans. Economically Lowe's must be crazy, I'm thinking if these people are married it's 12,500 households, if they have the normal 2 kids it's about 7,000 households. Here in Mi. 90% of the Doctors are Muslims. The ultra conservative anti-tax hero Grover Norquists wife is an American Muslim, do they express their hate toward her, I didn't think so.

Apparently Lowe's had a knee-jerk reaction to this hateful group. My knee-jerk reaction is to not buy anything from Lowe's until they locate their backbone.

While I think that FFA is a bunch of bigots that do not represent real conservatives, this is really no different than the HuffPost campaign a while back to get advertisers to boycott Glenn Beck.

The really sad part is that these advertisers actually cave into these intolerant jerks on both sides.

Actually, it is very different. The FFA protests people for who they are, the HuffPost campaign wanted to boycott someone for what they said.

Rather large difference.

I guess Warren can't appreciate the difference.

No surprise there.

I wonder if this Florida Family Association also plans to protest fellow Evangelical Christian Republicans who are found to be adulterers? After all, if this group claims to be standing up for biblical values - adultery is listed as one of the Top Ten sins according to the Ten Commandments. Funny thing though - being a homosexual is not one of the top ten sins according to the Ten Commandments. This group might want to rethink their hatred of homosexuals...

I've been on the FFA mailing list for several years, added by somebody else. I started to unsubscribe but became fascinated (like a car wreck).

A new RALLY email comes out every 2-3 weeks and the heated rhetoric leaves out details. Ex:about "a Family Guy episode" where "a talking dog" ridiculed biblical passages.

Each email includes show advertisers and email addresses of the sales VP and CEO, then cut&paste text. An upgrade sent you to their site where a screen let you simply click a drop down, type your name, and methodically send out their canned protest. Whenever an advertiser withdraws (even if they say it was scheduled) the FFA sends out a "keep it going" email.

For years FFA targeted LOGO, especially Adam and Steve, which irked them for the Genesis pun, always warning "Children might see!" Ridiculous since any cable box can block channels. You don't need to boycott advertisers, or get providers to suppress content. Nice to know the internet will cable obsolete soon, and the FFA demographic won't be able to log into subversive websites. They rely on low-information easily riled emailers (viral RW target).

Once or twice a year they beg for money stressing they're a charity and righteous. MusInAmer is new turf, as normal targets are gay, teen sex and druguse. Throw that h8te net wide FFA.

The show is stupid just like 99% of reality tv, but Lowes decision is far more stupid. Glad that I will never give another dollar to these bigoted clowns.
