Higgs Boson Search: CERN Releases New Data Said To Narrow Hunt For 'God Particle'

Higgs Boson

JOHN HEILPRIN   12/13/11 04:19 PM ET   AP

GENEVA — Physicists are closing in on an elusive subatomic particle that, if found, would confirm a long-held understanding about why matter has mass and how the universe's fundamental building blocks behave.

Few people outside physics can fully comprehend the search for the Higgs boson, which was first hypothesized 40 years ago. But proving that the "God particle" actually exists would be "a vindication of the equations we've been using all these years," said one Nobel laureate.

Scientists announced Tuesday that they had found hints but no definitive proof of the particle that is believed to be a basic component of the universe. They hope to determine whether it exists by next year.

It's hard to find, not because it is especially tiny, but because it is hard to create, said physicist Howard Gordon of the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. He works with the ATLAS experiment, one of two independent teams looking for the Higgs boson at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva.

CERN runs the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border, a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel where high-energy beams of protons are sent crashing into each other at incredible speeds.

A fraction of those collisions could produce the Higgs particle, assuming it exists.

Researchers said Tuesday that they had defined a range of likely masses for the Higgs.

CERN's director-general, Rolf Heuer, said "the window for the Higgs mass gets smaller and smaller" as scientists learn more.

"But be careful – it's intriguing hints," he said. "We have not found it yet. We have not excluded it yet."

Tuesday's revelations were highly anticipated by thousands of researchers, but the ideas behind the Higgs boson date back to the 1960s.

British physicist Peter Higgs and others theorized its existence to explain why the fundamental particles in matter have mass. Those particles, such as electrons, are the building blocks of the universe. Mass is a trait that combines with gravity to give an object weight.

Frank Wilczek, a Nobel laureate and physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said finding the Higgs boson would tie up a loose end of the standard model of physics, which requires that a Higgs-like particle exist.

"Since the equations have worked so brilliantly now for decades, it's really nice to dot the i's and cross the t's," Wilczek said.

In addition, if the mass of the Higgs is within a certain range, that would support some other theories that go beyond the standard model, he said.

Those theories predict the existence of other yet-to-be-found particles, meaning the Large Hadron Collider "will have another wave of brilliant discoveries in the future," Wilczek said.

The mass range reported Tuesday is "perfect" to meet that requirement, he said.

"Because it fits together so beautifully with everything else we know ... I'm certainly inclined to believe it," he said. He called Tuesday's presentations "awesome ... just beautiful work."

The lead physicist for the team running the separate CMS experiment outlined findings similar to those of the ATLAS team. The collaborations for the ATLAS and CMS experiments each involve about 3,000 scientists and engineers.

The Higgs like all bosons is a mental construct. One looks for a mental constructs in one's head and then looks for evidence that there could be such a 'reality' in the ghostly trails of dotted trajectories on the computer screen. The search for a thing as small as the cosmos is large is important because it might lead, not to truth, that's philosophy, but to use. To be useful does not require that our knowledge of the wavefront be complete.

Particle physics is dogmatic. Any research that suggests there are aspects of current research that lead to different questions and other possibilities, equally useful but ones that do not resolve to the metaphysical God Particles and Big Bangs, are ruled inadmissible and will not see publication in the journals.

2,500 years ago Eastern metaphysicians believed that unity was invisible due to the illusions created by human perception and some in physics see that same unity in the shadows on the screen.

The quest for proof that God exists isn't necessary in order for what we do know to be useful
but it may be the attraction that keeps the wheels at Cern spinning.

Why do we call it a God Particle ….. It contributes 99 % to the mass of the proton… The remaining 1 % is contributed by the other constituent parts - the three quarks – are these beyond God`s jurisdiction…. Is God then not omnipresent?... Does God create only mass…. What about volume?

These questions remain unanswered.... Specially so if we call the Higgs boson as a God particle.

By far the best explanation is to consider God as a cosmic consciousness - an omnipresent mind – that does not create matter or energy… but only the laws of physics.. Classical as well as quantum.. Relativity … Special as well as General.. via the Anthropic Principle.
It’s the equivalence of Mass and energy via Einstein’s equation E = m*c*c, and the enormous energy contained in the Proton which keeps it in one piece, and so gives it the mass.

It was on expected lines… this discovery of the Higgs boson… What if it is confirmed?... Where was the need to spend Billions of dollars?

"we" don't call it the God Particle, the Media does.

And why they call it the God Particle is a fairly easy question to answer; it sells.

The rest of your post is nearly incoherent ramblings - which is quite typical of someone who believes in God.

No, just someone who realizes there is no answer, even if they discover every single particle that makes up everything in the entire universe they will STILL have to figure out where those particles came from, and that is something they and YOU will NEVER be able to do, so who cares about ramblings, it is all ramblings anyhow now isn't it ? You were saying ?

@ TwoZeroOZ
Who are `We` ? Are you a Scientist?
`Ramblings` I agree. A substantial part of all this - The blog and the responses – is made up of ramblings. But `Incoherent` I somehow don`t agree.
Which part is incoherent? ...Have I said anything that contradicts the `Standard model of Particle Physics` or `Special Relativity`?.. I don`t think so.
Perhaps you don`t like the idea of `Cosmic consciousness` or `An Omnipresent mind`, for the simple reason that it can never be proved.
Many renowned Scientists such as `Erwin Schrodinger` and Paul Davies` accept `Cosmic Consciousness` or `God is a mind` viewpoint, as very much in the domain of possibility. Of course it is philosophy but in no way it contradicts or goes against any aspect of established Science.
But if you still think it is `Incoherent`, then it looks as if there is something you seem to know, which is obviously not known to me.
In any event I am pleased to make your acquaintence, and look forward to your response.

See the John Hagelin videos on youtube on 'consciousness' in relation to superstring, unified field theory. Physicists have found what Eastern mystics have been telling humanity for millennia: we are all ONE, are all connected, and are connected to ultimate eternal and infinite consciousness.
That sounds like God to me.
We are each unique in exactly the same way through infinite variation.

If that is your conclusion, then your understanding of string theory, or any unified field theory, is very poor.

You know, I think there comes a point where it becomes pointless.

Suppose I went 1,000 years in the future, and science kept advancing the whole time. I'd find out they found something smaller than the quark, then they found something smaller than that, THEN, they found something smaller than that... THEN, smaller than that... and so on and so on...

How far down do they have to go before someone says, "Who cares?"

You can fit a mega-trillion wakahoobies on the edge of a quark. (a wakahoobie is the particle they're going to discover in the year 4620, and we can't even imagine it yet.)
And I care about that particle... why?

It's like the scientists are little kids going, "Oh, YEAH? Well, *I* can find a particle even SMALLER than YOUR particle!" (sticks out tongue.)

Actually, I do a lot more than post comments on HP. But there's science and then there's junk science, science that has no use or value. It has no use or value to say that there's a "God particle" smaller than a quark. It's sensationalism, and pointless.

I was looking at this again, and the oxymoron occurred to me... "God" is supposed to be everything, a giant, all-encompassing thing that is omnipresent through the whole universe... and now they're saying there's a "God particle" that's tinier than an atom? Will they next take their telescopes and get the largest, mega picture of the biggest thing they've ever seen, the "Tiny Speck Megaverse"?

God particle is a term coined by the Media, for who-knows-what reason.
04:16 PM on 12/16/2011
Most respectable scientists use words such as "might," "...reason to believe," etc., as they seem to in this article.
Let's remember that it is very easy for many of us to fall into the accidental habit of discussing a yet-unproven theory using words that many of us may interperate as a proven fact. This is something we all should be more aware of & take caution with our choice of words. Undeniable & scientifically proven facts, however, should be made clear and presented as just that: facts. It is our duty to do so.
I suppose this is where the problem arises: when a scientist makes a positive statement that leads most people to interperate as proven "facts."
My experience has been that the religious and spiritualists are most guilty of "knowing" (with zero tangible proof or reasoning for me to even consider their claims).
Since religion has permeated our cultures for such a long time, perhaps we should consider that some people (i.e. raised religious) may unintentionally use their language in the way they have become so accustomed to via their upbringing...?
Perhaps we also need to remember that scientific advances are mostly very new to humankind. We have lived for centuries believing in many varieties of pure superstition (many still do), which makes it even more understandable that a scientist may feel the need to use the same type of language that such people are more familiar with.

if they really wanted to find this so called " God partlicle" why haven't they found it yet if our technology has improved significally since the "God particle" was hypothesized 40 years ago?

Do you actually want to know, and are you going to even read it when you're quoted a lot of scientific jargon that you're not going to understand?

The simple fact is, dozens of particles similar to the Higgs Boson were predicted long before any were discovered. All except the Higgs Boson have been discovered in that time. It just took a bigger particle accelerator to find it (and consequently, the money to fund its construction).

Here's a question for you; Why does the original 'theory of god' keep changing over the centuries when science keeps debunking different aspects of it? Also, if you're a subscriber to the theory of god, then why are you able to pick and choose which aspects you want to follow, and which you're going to ignore?
03:35 PM on 12/16/2011
answer to your question is man is always trying to find a scientific theory about everything.
as for why we can pick or choose follow, and which you're going to ignore is because God gave us the ability to choose what aspects to follow.
09:12 AM on 12/16/2011

In a related topic, a major research institution announced that it is still searching for the GOPintelligence boson, a theoretical elementary particle that presumes to hold the truth of the universe. Studies have been made at tea parties, at the RNC and at all of the talking heads shows but alas no evidence of intelligence has been found. The effort is now focused on the disCERN particle collider which has been fired up for the November and December tests. So far all of the known candidates who might contain the illusive GOPintelligence boson have been colliding without evidence of the boson’s existence. Some Democrats have been fearful that the public would be showered with toxic fallout but so far the GOPintelligence boson has remained just a theoretical concept.
