Homeless Veterans: Fewer Vets Are Reportedly Living On The Streets

Homeless Veterans

By KEVIN FREKING   12/13/11 06:44 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- Homelessness among the nation's veterans declined by about 12 percent during a one-year period ending January 2011, the Obama administration says.

Officials said the drop is a sign of progress and that the administration is on track for reaching President Barack Obama's goal of eliminating homelessness among veterans by 2015.

In all, there are nearly 67,500 homeless veterans, according to a survey that thousands of communities around the country help to administer each January. More than 76,000 homeless vets were counted in the prior year's survey.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan attributed much of the drop to getting more veterans to participate in a voucher program that greatly subsidizes their housing costs. While Congress has regularly increased funding for the voucher program, thousands of veterans were not taking advantage of the help.

"At the time we came into office in 2009, even though we had about 20,000 of those vouchers available; fewer than 5,000 veterans were actually using them and had successfully moved from the streets or shelters into permanent housing," Donovan said.

Officials said they were particularly encouraged with the results given that the drop occurred during a sluggish economy still shaking off the effects of a deep recession.

Officials also said that there has been more emphasis on reaching out to veterans and families at risk of becoming homeless. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki said that $100 million in grants will be made available over the coming year to help prevent veterans from becoming homeless or to quickly return them to stable housing.

"The problems that lead to homelessness begin long before veterans and their families are on the streets," Shinseki said.

Veterans are about 50 percent more likely to be homeless than the average American.

So why doesnt the miltary provide them a civil job status that keeps them employed doing work at a base or something that they were trained for at a government facility? transitional employment ? There should be no homeless in america and everyone should be afforded a place to bathe when they are without a home.soon there will be many homeless and peasant style living where there is only rich and poor , oh wait were already there in america now. SAD

"there are nearly 67,500 homeless veterans"

this figure is the elephant in the room...it shouldn't exist...these people defended our country for us...and this figure doesn't include the ones who died in the process...it's shameful, and we should hang our head as a country...what happened to America?...when did we stop caring?...when will we ever learn?

I say we should work to make enough money available to ensure that nobody should be homeless, starting with veterans, children, and the disabled.

Apparently, fewer of them under our crumbling bridges.

Another small Obama Admin positive that will go unnoticed as the R W echo and noise machine screeches and whines louder about nothing that matters..

Not to put a damper on the "good" news. But, we never hear of the mercenary contractors being homeless. Why do you think that is? Because they receive huge amounts of money -- up to $250,000 per year. Our volunteer military get nothing in comparison and come home to be homeless. And homelessness is not the only issue.

I find it so very amusing that H P has a story about homeless children on the rise and another front page story about homeless veterans on the decline... One is Bush's fault and one an Obama success.

our vets should should never go without EVER. the bases in the U.S should house them with meals included. it is the LEAST our nation could do to try to pay back the debt our nation owes to these veterans! bush cut their benefits for his wars oabmas is tryin to give abck but need to do more. after all our nation would be much different if our vets never served. time to give back.

Won't work. Homeless veterans would rather be homeless than 'housed' at some 'location'. Veterans want to live where 'home' is, not in some 'place' called housing. It's better to be homeless at home than housed on some base. Veterans have families and friends, that's where 'home' is, house or no house.

yes true but if we give them assistance then the repubs call it "welfare", better to have a warm place to sleep and warm food to eat than eating in an alley somewhere. we need to do more at ANY expense to stop this nation from destroying itself. and dont say obamas doing it cause thats a lie. he could if he wanted too. if the gop wants to win according to repubs why not let obama do what he wants if it is so bad. but you and i know if mcain was in office this country would be gone! republicans need to prioriitze their wants vs needs. the repubs wants well exceed their needs. when it should be their needs outway their wants.

About the second part, anybody who's read many of my post know I'm no fan of GW Bush. However, his administration actually did increase veteran's benefits (probably more out of guilt) during our period of patriot fervor. The realization of our veteran's homelessness problem really began late in that adminstration. The Veteran's Administration has done a wonderful job of identifying common problems and traits of homeless vets and crafted solutions that the Obama Admistration has accepted. Many people from many organisations, legislators included, collaborated to make programs like the VASH (Veterans Administration Supported Housing) the success that it's becoming, and many more programs merge into this solution.

Unfortunaely, there are still some homeless vets who won't commit to the basic requirements to participate in these special programs. Sad, true, we all live on our own schedule, and some are just a little more reluctant than others. When these vets really want the help they deserve, the VA will be there for them.

I'm not a VA employee, just a vet who knows of what I speak.

then you should know bush did cut veterans benefits. thats why it got so bad. the bush admin slammed socialism and its faults while praising the govt run VA. most of our vets had to do very bad things and never recieved the proper pshycological help after returning. thats the whole problem with it all. knowing and not doing enough. wherever and whenever they should be prioritized.

Because they have all been forgotten and may have just disappeared-sad the way we treat our citizens-if they are not out in plain site they are forgotten, Mitt should take that 10 Grand bet and use it to help citizens as well as all the wealthy-build up falling down communities-have the "homeless" and unemployed help rebuild and rent out the homes so people can afford them-so much waste in this country-the other day I took a train to visit my daughter-"the other side of the tracks" gave me a real eye opening experience-sad, so sad-we should ban together to do more to help-there is so much we could do-especially for the children-I think Congress and House should take a "CLASS" trip to visit these areas and spend a week walking in their shoes. They too would open their eyes!
