Lowe's 'All-American Muslim' TV Show Ad Controversy Continues To Ignite Emotions

Posted: 12/13/2011 12:11 pm

Despite attempts by Lowe's to assure customers that it values religious diversity, the uproar continues to increase after the corporation pulled advertising from a hit cable show about Muslims, bowing to complaints from an anti-Islamic organization.

Lowe's first made headlines last week for removing advertising from "All-American Muslim," a reality show on TLC that follows the lives of Muslim families in Dearborn, Mich. Since then, the company has been targeted by lawmakers, civil rights organizations and celebrities for the decision.

"Dear @Lowes, religious hatred is UN-AMERICAN," hip-hop mogul and interfaith activist Russell Simmons tweeted recently. Simmons has encouraged his fans to sign an online petition to Lowe's and several other companies that have been accused of pulling ads from the TV show after complaints from the Florida Family Association. Since its launch last week, more than 21,000 people have signed the petition. Other groups, including Auburn Theological Seminary in New York, have launched similar petitions.

The Tampa-based Florida Family Association says it has 35,000 members and sent complaints to Lowe's explaining the organization believes the program does not accurately depict Muslims because it shows families that are not extremists. Several politicians have called the organization, which has also protested "Gay Days" at Walt Disney World, a hate group.

Of the dozens of companies the group claims it convinced to pull their money, Lowe's is the only one to confirm that it stopped advertising. Several companies that The Huffington Post contacted, including Old Navy, Gap and McDonalds, said that they have not pulled ads or that they never advertised on the show in the first place.

In a post on its Facebook page, Lowe's representatives said the company "managed to make some people very unhappy" and is "sincerely sorry," but defended pulling the promotions.

"Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lighting rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance," the post said.

A spokeswoman for TLC owner Discovery Networks said the show is still scheduled to run through its season finale on Jan. 8. The series premiered Nov. 13 to an audience of 1.7 million. It has aired five episodes in its Sunday evening timeslot.

"The reason 'All-American Muslim' is such a natural fit on TLC is because we pride ourselves on showing cultures other people don't necessarily run into every day, from 'Little People, Big World' to 'Sister Wives,'" a show about polygamists, said spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg. "A lot of people have preconceived ideas about Muslims, so we wanted to show regular Muslims."

I have admired and shopped at Lowes on a regular basis for several years..... not any more. Lowe's bigotry toward the Muslim faIth has NO place in America. I am ashamed of your corporation!!

Given the brazen disregard for the diversity of views that Lowes has shown it would be completely honest if they put signs outside of their stores that say, "Only a Few Christians Welcome." If a company can afford to cater to one religion over the many religions that constitute the American coat of many colors then that company deserves to rely on that one group to meet its payroll. Why should Americans pay Lowes to discriminate against other Americans?

The tease for this article described the show as a "hit". Who writes those things, anyway?

What is escaping many of the posters here is that Loews was a sponsor to begin with, while most other American businesses did not back the show. Aren't they the true haters? Maybe we should boycott any firm that didn't sponsor the show.

Please try to understand that most advertisers don't want to waste their money. The show got off to bad start ratings-wise and went down from there. That some group was unhappy with the show and its advertisers probably played into Loews decision, but non-existent ratings would have been the far louder voice. The lack of ratings would be the fault of the American viewing public. Perhaps we should boycott them.

Again, if Loews was "racist" they wouldn't have sponsored the show to begin with.

The show lost 30% more of it viewership. It loses with every show, one after another, dropping even further in the ratings.

And I'll be interested to see that Lowe's sales have skyrocketed.

Just about the time I think I will switch to Lowe's I see this.

I am not a fan of reality shows so I don't care if it stays on or goes into reruns. Still this incident shows we have a significant number of Americans who are very racist and fascist in their attitudes. If they ever get complete power, we will have war just like Italy and Germany did.

If one does not like a show, just don't watch it. Low ratings spell cancellation.

Scary is the accusation that one shoe fits all Muslims or all American Christians must subscribe to a narrow sectarian view of Christianity to be considered a "good" American or Christian.

I guess I will go to Ace, True Hardware or even to Home Depot for my things. OSH has some good selections as well.

There is nothing lower than Lowe's, lol... At least the show is getting loads of publicity. More people may now have the opportunity to see Muslims in their natural habitat, real homes with real life situations. And for many people, that can be a "Learning experience" (TLC) because some people are under the impression that all Muslims live in caves and are barbaric, so these people on the show must be actors. lol Or it could be that stealth Islam that Newt Gingrich has warned us about.... the Muslims who can kill you with kindness! As'salaamu alaikum :) keep the show going, it's great!

It's NOT their natural habitia. I've lived and worked in their "natural habitat." (What are they? Animals?)

They live in a free society devoid of sharia. They are a minority and soaking it for all they can get with this propaganda reality show - which has no real semblance to the reality Muslimas live like in dar al-Islam. Want "reality"? Send these American Muslimas to the Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Afganistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, or even "moderate" Indonesia, Kuwait, Turkey, or Egypt. Let's follow their day in the life of a Muslima there, surrounded by true Islam in an Islamic culture and an Islamic society. THEN they'd get some viewers.

I agree they should do that... then people could see the truth, as is. I've been to some of those countries that you mentioned, you would be surprised. It amazes me that so many people think all those people in the east are monsters.
09:07 AM on 01/04/2012
Yup. I've been living here in the Middle East, and you know what? For the most part, people are the same everywhere. They want peace, freedom, love, respect, family and laughter. Yes, there are are some ugly governments and systems, but for the most part, people are people, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Black, White, whatever...doesn't matter.

What and who are the Florida Family Association? Is it a real 501 (c) 3? Or a drop box and a website? If Lowe's caved to a front group, they need to rethink their PR department.

Look at how minorities are treated in Muslim countries and you will know what they have in mind for the west future. Hell check YouTube and you'll know.

And that is the reason to do the same here? Be more tolerant and don't determine your conduct simply in opposition to what others do in other countries. By the way all Muslims are not the same. A Muslim can be and are good Americans.

I found this comment on Al-Ghazali

JeffJones2: Al Ghazali is praised in this artical while this person was extremely intolerant against other religions as shown from what he wrote. Why isn't this mentioned in the article?

One must go on jihad (i.e., warlike razzias or raids) at least once a year...one may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children. One may set fire to them and/or drown them...If a person of the Ahl al-Kitab [People of The Book – primarily Jews and Christians] is enslaved, his marriage is [automatically] revoked…One may cut down their trees...One must destroy their useless books. Jihadists may take as booty whatever they decide...they may steal as much food as they need...

Al-Ghazali (d. 1111). Kitab al-Wagiz fi fiqh madhab al-imam al-Safi’i, Beirut, 1979, pp. 186, 190-91; 199-200; 202-203. [English translation by Dr. Michael Schub.]
