Scott Walker Recall Volunteers Say They Have Proof Of Intimidation By Opponents

Scott Walker Recall

First Posted: 12/13/11 10:35 AM ET Updated: 12/13/11 10:40 AM ET

Volunteers working for the effort to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) captured a video this week that they claim is proof of the sort of intimidation and harassment they've been subjected to over the past month.

In the video, available at ABC affiliate WISN, a visibly upset Fred Frisby can be seen approaching the camera of Walker recall volunteer Steve Nagel while hurling obscenities and eventually making physical contact. Frisby was later arrested by local police and charged with disorderly conduct.

"I just thought this guy is out of control. I could just see the steam coming off his head. So I thought, 'Wow, this could be serious,'" Nagel, who was out on a busy street in Brookfield, Wisconsin collecting petitions, told WISN.

Another volunteer, Steve Spieckerman said Frisby got angry after volunteers wouldn't answer questions about what they didn't like about Scott Walker.

"Do you pay health care? No, you don't pay health care. You mooching off the system?" Frisby can be seen asking, before apparently grabbing Nagel's camera.

"He turned around and he jammed the camera back in my chest and he put his fist up to my face and said, 'How do you like that?'" Nagel said.

Some petitioners claim that this type of behavior has become typical in the recall campaign.

Volunteer Jim Brown told WISN that there are "a lot of people who flip us off, who yell at us and call us names," but earlier reports suggest that some actions are more hostile than this.

There have been multiple reports of opponents to the Scott Walker recall effort destroying or defacing petitions, a felony act punishable by a $10,000 fine or up to 3 1/2 years in jail. Volunteers have also alleged more violent forms of intimidation, such as death threats, destruction of property and one reported incident in which a driver supposedly threatened petitioners with his vehicle.

Despite these claimed encounters, volunteers for the Scott Walker recall effort reported that they had collected more than 300,000 signatures as of the end of November, just 12 days after the beginning of the petition drive. They'll need to collect 540,208 valid signatures by Jan. 17 in order to trigger a recall election.

Perhaps the worst bi- product of this mess in Wisconsin has been the incidents of ordinary Americans being pitted against each other. The destruction of the economy under Gomer and THE DICK along with the GOP, now TPGOP, has torn lives apart, ended dreams by ordinary Americans of owning a home, sending their kids to college, and maybe retiring some day and enjoying the last years of their lives. The intimidation obviously comes from the fact that they realize very few of the recall voters have never paid taxes!

Collective bargaining in the public sector is like a conspiracy to steal from taxpayers who end up paying about double what they make themselves. Walker knows he can't win so he is intent on doing as much damage as possible before the good citizens of WI. run him out of town. I am so proud of Wisconsonites.

Hey Mr. TPGOP... here is a neat idea... why not try DEMOCRACY??!

You know... if you are so right, then why not test that assumption with an election? Let them try to get petitions, and if they do, then let the PEOPLE vote on it...

I mean, the only reason that you would resort to violence is if:

1. You know you will lose.
2. You really DONT care about the democratic process... only WINNING counts!

That's ok, you don't need to answer. We know the truth....

You know you're doing the right thing when they have to resort to violence. Women suffragettes got the same treatment nearly a century ago. Hopefully it doesn't go that far, but it seems OWS is getting similar treatment. Keep up the good work and keep on standing for what's right.

So 2msrt, you're all over this thread, expressing your opinions about 'liberals' and expressing your support for the antics of Gov. Walker. And even if I disagree with your opinions, I agree that you have the right to express them.

However, I wonder if you're really aware of the irony of this particular comment of yours. Consider some facts: The story is about opponents of the recall drive allegedly intimidating, harassing, and assaulting signature gatherers. One reader, pflkickner, reminds others of the historical fact that suffragettes also faced intimidation, harassment, and assault. Suffragettes (in case you don't know) were women who fought for the right for women to vote, because at the time most women did not have the right to vote.

Then you, in your comment to pflickner, apparently criticize her appearance. There's a lot wrong with your comment, in that it's rude, condescending, and presumes your opinion about pflickner's appearance somehow matters.

However, beyond the execrable nature of your comment, it is just all kinds of ironic. We read a story about Republican bullies, a reader shares a historical fact, and then a Republican bully says that reader is ugly.

Do you see what you've done, 2smrt? You have demonstrated, all by yourself, the allegations raised against some opponents of the attempt to recall Gov. Walker are most likely true. You bullies just don't know how to behave otherwise.

Thanking you in advance for the courtesy of a reply, I remain,

Some Walker supporters will do anything to keep him in office but Why?  He has attacked the very fabric of Wisconsin and what it stands for, Democracy, Worker's Rights and Equal Rights for all.  It doesn't surprise me the amount of hostility some of his supporters are showing towards others but you have to wonder, what is their stake in it?

Walker took $140 Million and gave it to a few Corporations for Tax Cuts while cutting Healthcare for thousands of People in the State.  Why are a few Corporations and their Profits more important than Healthcare for your neighbors?  It just goes to show some people's Character or lack there of.

Whin? Hipocrites?

I think the "shallow mentality" is actually your third-grade education showing through.

Go back now for that GED. Then you can join the GOP. They badly need well educated recruits.

Actually 2smrt2beright I pay my taxes. I am a liberal. That just proved you ignorant. The difference between us is not how much we pay in taxes. Its how patriotic we are. I think that paying taxes to better my life and others is the way it should be. You think that they are stealing your money. I have compasion for my fellow Americans. You have Greed! I understand that we cannot maintain our roads, saftey, education, Etc. without paying taxes. And some of the citizens in this country fall on hard times. This is not Africa. We are The UNITED STATES for christ sake. Show a little compassion.
