Rick Berman's Anti-Labor Front Group To Launch $10 Million Ad Campaign

Berman

WASHINGTON -- A D.C.-based front group representing corporate interests will be rolling out a $10 million national advertising campaign next week to promote legislation that would likely weaken unions.

The group, the Center for Union Facts, is headed by Washington public-affairs svengali Rick Berman, best known for his advocacy for the restaurant and alcohol industries through front groups like the Center for Consumer Freedom and the American Beverage Institute. Billing itself as a "union watchdog" critical of labor leaders' "abuses of power," the Center for Union Facts has run anti-union advertisements in the past.

Berman, who spearheaded a $3 million ad campaign that infuriated labor leaders in 2006, told HuffPost that the new national campaign would be "significant," likely topping the projected $10 million as it carries into the new year. The group has pinpointed certain states where the spots will definitely run, though Berman wouldn't share any details.

"People need to understand what the loss of control is once a union is in the workplace," he said.

Per usual, Berman also declined to say where the funding is coming from. Like other Berman-run groups, the Center for Union Facts is registered as a nonprofit and therefore doesn't have to disclose its corporate donors. In 2009, the most recent year for which data is available, the nonprofit took in $1.3 million and paid $590,000 to Berman's for-profit company, Richard Berman and Co., for "management fees."

The purpose of the ad campaign, Berman said, is to promote the Employee Rights Act, a bill introduced this summer by two GOP lawmakers, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.). Although Hatch has described the bill as an attempt to modernize labor law in the interests of both workers and employers, labor leaders say the bill would be detrimental to workers and unions.

Among other measures, the bill would require that a unionized workplace hold a re-certification election every three years, creating regular opportunities for the union to be ousted, likely to the delight of many employers.

American Rights at Work, a pro-union advocacy group, described the bill as "a huge step backward" for workers in a statement to HuffPost, accusing Berman of spreading misinformation for financial profit.

"It's another shameful attempt by Berman and his corporate backers to pretend to stand for workers, when really his goal is the same as always: to fundraise off of his corporate backers and mislead the public by attacking critical consumer safety, labor, and environmental protections -- and the watchdog groups acting in the public's interest," said Kimberly Freeman Brown, the group's executive director.

Berman said the ad campaign will include several different spots, though only one has been released online so far. In the ad, two regular-looking guys are in the break room at work, watching a slimy-looking politician reel off platitudes on television. When one worker informs the other that their union dues helped put the man in office, he spits his coffee out in shock.

Employee rights-anti union is an oxymoron in itself.

Berman also runs front groups that are against animal welfare regulations, and national animal groups (such as HSUS and ASPCA) that advocate for improves lives for animals.

The man is a real piece of work.

Whether you agree with unions or not, at least don't be duped by front groups that are paid to spread misinformation and doubt in order to suit a corporate agenda.

Clear evidence of corporate greed. This is why unions were created in the first place, to protect the workers from unethical labor practices used by big companies including violence inflicted upon workers that didn't tow the line.
Those that blame lousy education on teachers because of the Unions are poorly informed. The primary problem with the current public educational system is not the fault of the teachers but the system itself. It is an old antiquated system which is attempting to teach in the 21st century using the same teaching principles of the past.. While others blame the high cost of tuition in the universities on professor salaries they neglect to realize that college is big business. The salary expense for college teachers is minimal compared to revenues. It is administration salaries and expenditures that drive cost of educatin.
You can parallel the demise of unions in this country with the shrinking of the middle class. You can also parallel the faltering American economy with the increase of middle class families falling into the poverty level. Conservatives still try to force feed the American public with trickle down economics which has proven to be an ineffective policy for the vast majority of people in this country. While corporations and the top 1% of earners in this country are sitting on trillions of dollars in reserve Americans are suffering economically and the need for unions are more necessary than ever to correct the course of economics in our nation.

All you have to do is look at what unions have done to the Educational System in this country. High property taxes, even higher college tuition and kids graduating dumber than boxes of rocks and unemployable. Teachers are paid too much for doing a bad job. Good teachers are not paid enough and they are the ones that burn out early. When they see dummies and bad teachers getting the same pay and beneifits as they are working their butts off for it is very demoralizing for a good teacher.

So how come the heavily unionized Finland schools are so incredibly good? Unions didn't make 1/4 children live in poverty. Greed did that.
05:31 PM on 12/14/2011
It’s called Collusion! The unions put the money behind democrats so that the democrats will do their bidding and the only way unions have survived is by unionizing government workers! Union workers are over paid 90% of the time. Most Union workers are not worth the pay they get! Government should not be unionized!
And as for your terms in this article that states they are a “front group†for this or that I noticed that you did state that the other group that defend unions are “front groupsâ€....why not? Remember when we had Welfare to Work? Well now you know where they all work!

And where are the numbers for the money given to the GOP by the Chamber of Commerce (which receives money from other countries in order to influence American politics - where's your rage at that BTW)? Where are the numbers for the payments to lobbyists by the big banks, insurance companies, etc? News flash, they have more money, which means more power. Your numbers mean nothing without a context. Good effort but a fail.

Berman advocates the elimination of OSHA protection for workers, union busting, repeal of environmental regulations placed on industry, and the repeal of most child labor laws. If successful, your kids will need to work just to keep a roof over your head.

Oh bull, They promote the worker not being taken advantage of by unions and democrats patronizing them. Why do you think the unions are afraid to have a vote every three years. Once they are in there is no accountability, except to the politicians who pass every law to protect the union (not the worker) and block any law that the union does not like.
What good reason that would be on behalf of the worker would the union not want a vote every three years? What the worker is too dumb to know what they want?
09:46 PM on 12/14/2011
Obviously, you haven't followed Berman. Also, do you realize how costly and time consuming it would be to require a vote every 3 years? Probably off your radar as you seem to have your mind already made up. I heard the open mind close after only 6 characters. Then again, Republican'ts don't want free thinking, only obedience.
01:16 PM on 01/04/2012
Clearly you do not know what you are talking about. The current law allow decertification at the end of every contract. That means if the agreement is one year the workers can decertify the Union. The maxium contract duration for the "window period of decertirfication is currently three years. Simply said, the law allows employee to decertify any Union now!

Next time you commnet make sure you know what you are talking about!

The inclusion of "truth" in the name of the company is your first clue that there is little truthful in their message. What truth exists will be twisted in such a way that it loses any real meaning.
05:16 PM on 12/14/2011
I meant I meant "facts." It doesn't really matter though. Republican'ts don't pay much attention to facts or the truth.
09:06 PM on 12/14/2011
Been watching one of your truthful, union backing, prized presidential consultants rob people of 1,2 billion will name that Corzinegate, and another Rev Sharpton is so busy shaking down business's he forgot to pay just a little over 2 million in taxes..........Your talking about truth?????

Rezerface, FANNED!
04:58 PM on 12/14/2011
Berman is smiling all the way to the bank (he pocketed nearly half of the non-profit's gross income in 2009). He doesn't care about workers, he's too busy counting the money from his corporate sponsors. I hope the IRS audits this sham company and he goes to jail.
09:07 PM on 12/14/2011
There going to be busy checking out Sharpton and Corzine.........
09:31 PM on 12/14/2011
Why is it that you seem to believe that two wrongs make a right? Do you have anything substantive to add or is this type of comment indicative of the limits of your intellect? I tend to believe the answer to be the latter rather than the former. Can you figure that out or did it go over your head like everything else?
09:44 PM on 12/14/2011
I hope they audit the unions and expose what they are really doing with the workers pay and what politicians are being bought out
09:48 PM on 12/14/2011
I'm not against that. I would hope everything is on the up and up. If not, it needs to be corrected. Berman, though, will be headed to jail without doubt.

Unions, while doing a lot of good in the past for workers have become a real detriment to the health of the economy. They have forced excessive financial demands on states and companies. They destroyed the automobile industry which had to be bailed out by taxpayers. They demand a get obscene bonuses for public workers and then cry foul when the states have to make changes in order to avoid bankruptcy. Unions must be contained in their financial demands or they will bankrupt every enterprise in which they are involved. BUT, this will not happen since they grease the pockets of politicians who then pass bills that benefit the unions.

Interesting that the more heavily unionized Germans haven't bankrupted their industry. Corporations grease the pockets of politicians who then pass bills that benefit corporations. Wake up. Unions are the only thing standing between individual American citizens and total corporate rule.

Remember when Scott Walker was going after unions, and his supporters were saying that private sector unions are good and public sector unions are bad? Remember that? Now that the cons in this country are going after all unions, I wonder what the argument is this time for destroying the protections of blue collar workers?

No, that's the rule of corporations, get everything you can and do not worry about workers, state or country. Corporations are about money, not people. Large corporations are multinational and could care less about Americans, why do you think they off-shore jobs?

They did not attack police and fire unions because they needed the protection (at taxpayer expense) and enforcement. Divide and conquer is a constant theme with Republican'ts. F and F.
