Lady Gaga On How Her Fans Inspired Her Social Movement (VIDEO)

Lady Gaga

During her rise to pop music superstardom, Lady Gaga has captivated legions of fans across the globe with her Monster movement.

In HuffPost Black Voices latest episode of "The Tanning Effect," the multifaceted Grammy Award-winner elaborated on how her fans have influenced her feelings of social responsibility.

"The fans lead the music. And it just so happens that a lot of my fans have shared with me their stories," she said. "I traveled all over the world, and every night when the show was over, I would stop outside the arena and take pictures and sign autographs. And sometimes when it was really cold out, I would invite 30 fans on the bus and give them hot chocolate, give them Cheetos. Ask them if they were okay and they would say, 'My dad kicked me out because I'm gay'" (see video 2, 0:37).

She continued, "I would meet fans who were beat up outside of school or had to move high schools because they were teased for being fat. I can go on and on about the stories. But it wasn't until they shared their stories with me that I realized how like them I was, and I began to relive all of my struggles as a teenager."

Connecting with her countless fans has also made the singer-songwriter want to treat them like her family. "It's about society, but it's also about pledging a certain allegiance to your fan base," she added. "It's not like, 'Thanks for buying my record, f*ck you;' it's like, 'Thanks for buying my record -- and I will live and die and breath my work and my art to protect your dreams. Because you protect mine.'"

Gaga also opened up about what she listens to when she's not recording or touring, and the effect of hip-hop on her musical style.

Excerpt from Chapter 10 "Tan Is The New Cool"

Very simply, authentically, Monster Beats by Dr. Dre arrived after two years in development with a statement from Dre that explained his passion, why this product filled a need--because "people aren't hearing all the music." Who has greater credibility on that point than Dre? No one to my knowledge. Dre's statement went on, "With Beats, people are going to hear what the artists hear, and listen to the music the way they should, the way I do."

Oh, yeah. The truth sells. You might not be able to be a legendary music producer, but you could share the experience with professional-quality earphones for consumers that delivered sound as it was meant to be heard. Plus, they looked as cool as they fit. And when they hit the market, the sound experience more than exceeded expectations. By leveraging Interscope's stable of iconic artists, along with innovative partnerships with HP and Best Buy--not to mention superb marketing that included the likes of LeBron James in what became a must-see commercial with him sitting in his locker room with his Beats by Dr. Dre on and singing along (off-key) to Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time"--a sea change in awareness about the importance of sound followed next. The reception was so robust that a short time later Beats by Dr. Dre put out headphones with a Lady Gaga signature and high-quality earbuds for Sean "Diddy" Combs. When AdAge named Beats by Dr. Dre one of the hottest brands of 2010, Jimmy Iovine reported 1.3 million pairs sold for the year. He also announced that he and Dre's next collaboration with Hewlett-Packard was HP Beats Audio inside PCs and that five million units were readying for release.

Miraculous as it must seem to develop a high-priced product in the midst of the worst recession in modern times and have it turn out to serve a cultural need such that multiple industries are supported and enriched by it, I can attest that it's not brain surgery. It's problem-solving.

People who count love Gaga. The biggest pop and rock stars in the world for the past 20+ years have appeared on stage with her. Icons like Tony Bennett have called her a genius.

Gaga literally changed the course of pop music. She is the biggest star in the world right now for a reason. Her fans span generations and continents. People relate not only to her music but to her ability to connect with her fans as not just a huge, homogeneous group, but as individuals who were born this way. Gaga is an uncompromising intellectual, a true artist.

as long as she keeps her eye on the ball and keeps going with the things shes doing and doesn't lose herself in the process I think Lady Gaga is going to be this generation's Michael Jackson, in the sense of, she is crossing new boundaries, pushing limits that others would be like, you can't do that, and in the process she is bringing together people from different generations, and different cultures, and different lifestyles together. Michael Jackson's fans were every kind of person, white folks, black folks, hispanics, asians, everybody listened to him, because he was able to touch on every kind of lifestyle in his music, and I really think that Lady Gaga can do the same thing, and will be able to bring people together in a way that not many people can. That being said, it will be how she adapts and deals with her fame and her fans that will determine whether or not she will be greater than Michael Jackson or not, that was always his downfall, in all his fame and fortune he was always struggling with personal issues, if Lady Gaga can deal with her personal issues and get them handled in private and keep them separate from her professional life, that will be the push to make her the queen of pop.

She deserves a TickleMe Plant (the only plant in the world that moves like her as it will close its finger like leaves and lower its arm like branches as Lady Gaga dances) Search TickleMe Plant to see live video and grow your own. A rose to you M’ Lady, a rose to you my friend.
The sounds may be angelic,
The music may be glistening,
But most of all what you’ve done for me
Is spend treasured time by listening.

The trappings, the costumes, the feathers and all
Can’t hide how you really care.
A rose to you M’Lady, a rose to you my dear
The most wonderful music ever made
Was the heartfelt sound that came from your ear.

For the most part I'm a substance over style kind of person and this holds true for my view of Gaga. Though, I find this sad because she is pretty musically talented, but I don't think it shows through the gold foil often enough.

I'm not really into pop music, but she made a fan out of me. You are hating if you think that this woman isn't talented. Just watch her perform live. She blows away the majority of the artists out there. To everyone that says that she's only a gimmick, look at clips of her from six years ago when she was going by her real name with her natural brunette hair. As talented as she is that just wasn't marketable. The image that you see now is marketable, and it's because of that gimmick that she gets to share her talent to the rest of the world.

I've seen Lady Gaga perform MANY times, and she does NOT lip sync. Some of the "layered" vocal tracks are recorded, but NEVER the front vocals. It's impossible for ANY artist to sing more than one part simultaneously, and I'd rather hear her "layered" vocals recorded than sung by back up singers. Regarding the theory of "voice processing": If you watch some of the videos on YouTube of Gaga performing acousticly with only her piano, or perhaps saw her holiday special aired on Thanksgiving eve, that theory will be abolished as well. Lady Gaga makes a lot of $$$$$ because she is one of THE MOST talented and creative musical artists that has ever been recorded. I also admire her for adhering to the 'cause' she has chosen which is one that had been ignored for far too long. The fact that you describe it as "safe" and "fashionable" is something I cannot understand. Where was I when suicide due to bullying become "safe and fashionable"? Since this IS America, and all Americans were given the RIGHT to freedom of speech, I nod my head to you for taking the opportunity to do so. That RIGHT also allows us to see that no matter who we are or how closed-minded we may be, we all have an opinion and the RIGHT to speak it freely. In the words of Lady Gaga herself: "That is your opinion, and I don't intend to waste my time trying to change it.".

What was the music she said she's been listening to at the beginning?

"Glam Rock" (from the 80s)

Lip syncing, voice processing and adhering to a safe fashionable cause are giving Gaga $$$$$

All these haters have only ONE real motivation. Lady Gaga is nothing like them. Therefore if you admire her you are a bit further away from admiring THEM. They want to you admire people who are more like they are. Usually this means macho males want you to admire other macho males. Conservative people want you to admire other conservatives.

People usually have some self interest even when they sneakily pretend to be objective. They want people as much like themsleves to be important as it's a few steps closer to THEM being important. lEgo is everything. Lady Gaga is NOT like them and that's why they hate her. And demand that YOU hate her too. Simple.

Wow, some of the comments these people post... SMH, they know nothing about her.
A gig? Oh please, I, along with many other people, know that she has amazing musical talent. That's why she became famous, and not because of her uncanniness & costumes. Listen to her sing while playing the piano live, and then say something to me. And drop the hermaphrodite dispute. The only reason that rumor started is because she supports gay rights.
