Dakota Meyer, Medal Of Honor Award Recipient, Supported By Obama After Doubts Surface

Dakota Meyer Medal Of Honor

DYLAN LOVAN   12/15/11 08:24 PM ET  AP

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — President Barack Obama is standing by his award of the Medal of Honor to a Marine in the Afghanistan war despite a published report Thursday charging exaggerations of the battle.

Obama presented the award to Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer three months ago, calling him the "best of a generation" that joined the military after 9/11. He described the day in 2009 when Meyer braved enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan to save U.S. and Afghan comrades.

McClatchy Newspapers reported that its review of documents turned up numerous "untrue, unsubstantiated or exaggerated" assertions about the firefight. The report by a McClatchy correspondent who was embedded with the military and witnessed the Sept. 8, 2009, battle, based the story on analysis of dozens of military documents, including sworn statements by Meyer and others involved.

The story also said Meyer displayed heroism that day and deserves the award.

Obama spokesman Jay Carney said the president "remains very proud" of Meyer and his "remarkable acts of bravery."

Meyer, a native of Green County, Ky., could not be reached for comment Thursday. He said on his Twitter page that he has received an outpouring of support since the report was published. He posted a picture of the front page of a newspaper that prominently displayed the story.

"I can't thank everyone enough for the support people on Twitter and other Americans are showing me. So Thank You all," Meyer tweeted.

A friend of Meyer's who attended the Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House on Sept. 15 said Meyer was frustrated by the report because he has used the medal to draw attention to fallen and wounded Marines and soldiers.

"He's been very clear in almost every interview, he didn't ask for this. But he now has learned that it's his responsibility," said Chris Schmidt, of Columbia, Ky.

Meyer's grandfather, Dwight Meyer, said he hadn't seen the story and didn't know what it was about.

"Dakota just doesn't talk about (the battle), because he's had so much on his mind about it, because it's affected him tremendously," Dwight Meyer said.

Meyer has been humble about receiving the honor, calling it "the worst day of his life" because his comrades died.

The Marines said in a statement they were very disappointed McClatchy published the story. The award investigation process used first-person, eye-witness accounts and supporting documents and that Meyer "rightly deserved the nation's highest military honor," the Marines said.

The Marines acknowledged that the process was not flawless.

"Because of the nature of the events supporting awards for valor, it is normal for minor discrepancies to appear when reviewing the source information and collecting eyewitness statements," it said.

The Marines also acknowledged that the public narrative of Meyer's actions on the battlefield, as it appeared on the Marine Corps website, was his personal account.

The military said Meyer saved 13 American and 23 Afghan soldiers' lives, and he "personally killed at least eight Taliban insurgents, while providing cover for his team to fight their way out."

The McClatchy report said that could not have happened because 12 Americans and the reporter were ambushed that day.

Four were killed, and a fifth would later die of injuries. The report also said there were no statements that credit Meyer with killing eight Taliban.

The Humvee driver with Meyer during the ambush, Staff Sgt. Juan Rodriguez-Chavez, reported seeing Meyer kill one insurgent, according to the McClatchy story.

McClatchy's Washington bureau chief James Asher noted the Marines were not challenging the story.

"History isn't being well served by this, nor do I think Dakota Meyer is either," Asher said. "For reasons that are mystifying to me ... the Marine Corps wanted for some reason to make a better story."

Sgt. Meyer I'm sure is overwhelmed by all the attention he is getting. He is a young man still trying to find his way in all this mess, but I hope he does not think that the MOH gives him any more power than the next guy. It's the nations highest honor for a military man. Wear it proudly and most of all HUMBLY.

As I see it , many of men and woman go to war ! Many lose their lives . A few return ! There is no winners in war ! This is one of the young men who has returned to us ! Who he killed , how many he killed , should not be an issue ! someone killed or saved some ! He is one of the few who returned ! I for one , I am greatfull for his sacrifice and service as are many others ! I am also thankfull for his return ! We all have a loved one who fought and some that gave even their lives ! This yough man will have a lifetime fighting the demons of war ! I say leave him alone , shake his hand and thanks ! I present administration didn't put him over there , But he has brought him home ! Thank you President Obama ! I also am waiting for a love one to come home ! Bureaucrats get off this young man or go in his place ! First you want him to go n now you're impugning his character ! Either you want them to serve or not ! GET OFF IT ! PUT UP OR SHUT UP !

Look, either the soldier did SOMETHING or he didn't. I have yet to see anything that details what the Marines say and what the reporters research says. Both are lacking. In any case, there was a battle, some of our guys died, and this one had something to do with getting them out. He was shot at and killed at least one at pointblank range, and is probably going to be hearing screams in his nightmares for years. He's got the medal, he's trying to do some good with it, LEAVE HIM ALONE!!

When deciding who to believe on this story, I go with Sgt Meyer, over the embedded reporter, who probably spent most of the battle crapping himself and keeping under cover. The military, especially the USMC doesn't hand out the CMOH very often, especially to enlisted folks, and alive ones at that. In my 23 years of service, the only awards that seemed a little embellished were ones written for some staff officers, and even they were few. You will always have a PFC Lynch story every so often for political purposes, or rally the troops etc, but overall, the medals awarded to our troops, especially enlisted, are all earned. I don't like the President, but he is doing the correct thing, he better support Sgt. Meyer, he is the CIC after all.

The whole "War on Terror" is based on evil lies. From Abu Ghraib to Pat Tillman -- none of it is credible, let alone commendable. Instead of passing out phony awards there should have been indictments handed down for these trillion dollar lies and war crimes. It's a disgrace that this nation will never live down.

Wow! How sad that we actually take time to question this Marines Valor and integrity? hell its war, that says enough! We cannot seem to come together on any solutions for the economic disaster the entire world faces, yet we have to time to malign the life of someone who was called into action? Even if the was a photo op, who the f---k cares! Let this young man move on with his life without questioning his heroism, hell he has seen enough horror.

All I can say is remember Jessica Lynch?
11:32 AM on 12/16/2011
PFC Lynch's story was embellished, but she still was ambushed, captured, abused and probably would have been killed, if the rescue hadn't occurred. Her unit took a lot of casualties that day, including her First Sergeant, so it is nothing to trivilize either.

BS, she even said her captors gave her extraordinary care and were incredibly kind to her. They took loses because they screwed up and were some place they shouldn't have been. Look it up!

it is the congressional medal of honer and the president gives this award in the name of congress, it is his duty to so, and in no way is something he does on his own for political advancement.....
11:48 AM on 12/16/2011
To expand on your comments, most President feel very ackward with CMOH ceremony in the first place. Usually they have to award it to a family member because the recipient died in the battle. Secondly, none of them can relate to what the servicemember went through, since the last President to actually see serious combat was Ike. I don't like Obama, but this wasn't done as a political advancement, it was done as a duty required by the Office of the President.

I will never forget in speaking with the Vice President when he was running for President four years ago. He saw my Army pin and his tenor toward me changed completely. I was a Hillary girl but Biden was my second choice. I also met Mr. Clinton and Mr. Carter before and after they were elected. I am always amazed when I see the troops with the President. There is never any disrespect. In fact clamoring for that photo op or the chance to shake his hand. They treated Clinton and Obama the same as the treated Carter and Kennedy. Good peop;le!!! You GIs make us proud.

In any account of bravery there will be a few exaggerations. In the end the news paper found this young man did do incredible acts of bravery.

He is being targeted for pointing out a huge hypocrisy in gov't approved sales of arms. Why would the USA sell advanced weaponry to Pakistan? I don't care what McCain says Pakistan is not our Ally. Sure, things would have been different if Benazir Bhutto wasn't a.s.s.as.i.n.a.t.e.d.. The gov't is extreme i.s.la.m.i.s.t.. to the core. The T.a.l.i.ba..n came from Pakistan. I agree with Obama for sticking up for this young man. Good job Mr. President.

I would suspect that reports of any battle are somewhat exaggerated, especially if only using witness reports. People have different perceptions of danger, etc.

I suppose that in some horrific sense it's fitting that the final casualty of the Iraq war was the Medal of Honor. Certainly America's Honor didn't survive the conflict.

This is a no-substance drama. "He saved 13 men and 2 dozen afghanis!" 'No, he only saved 12 and a reporter!'

Why not just set the bar at killing fiddy men and having your shins blown off? The guy's a hero any way you cut it, and it's going to haunt him the rest of his life.

Well, of course its a photo op as you say. And I'm glad Obama is continuing his re-election effort. I would expect him to every bit as much as you would expect someone you favored to continue theirs. As for going in to bankruptcy, both the Republicans and Democrats have an equal hand in bringing us to that point. You and I can do something about that at the ballot box by giving term limits to career politicians who have their hands in the money pockets of the rich and the banking and oil industries. And if it so happens that Obama isn't re-elected, and of course I hope that he is, then so be it. Bottom line though is that term limits for politicians who have long outlived their usefulness is how we vote. I do hope that you vote, thefacts22.

It is very telling in that this thread has devolved into another petty, partisan battle. The Commander-in-Chief is standing by a recipient of the nation's highest military honor, and some use this as a opportunity to score cheap political points. And you wonder why many charge the Right with placing politics above country.

Take a look around this thread, the venom being spewed here is CONservative poison. Take a look at what has been going on the past 3 years. This is one case of the "both sides do it" meme is simply not the truth or reality.
