Facebook Timeline Debuts: New Profile Page Puts Personal Histories At The Fore (PICTURE)

Facebook Timeline New Profile Pages

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/15/11 02:59 PM ET Updated: 12/15/11 09:25 PM ET

After two months and as many lawsuits, Facebook is at last rolling out a revamped profile design that puts personal histories front and center.

First teased at Facebook's f8 conference in September, the new profile design, called "Timeline," has traded profile pages' discrete sections for an image-rich overview of people's lives. Rather than divvying up a user's profile into categories of content, Facebook's new profile pages deliver a portrait of a person composed of years' worth of relationship status updates, photos, and wall posts.

(See a screenshot of the new pages below).

Facebook's vice-president of product Chris Cox described Timeline as a "modern vehicle for scrapbooking," and indeed the new profile pages present a far-reaching archive of all a user has ever shared with the social networking site.

Scrolling through the Timeline can instantly take you back years, through graduations and breakups, and the fresh format can offer a glimpse at just how much Facebook knows about its members' lives.

In some cases, a Timeline will span decades: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's public profile begins at birth -- May 14, 1984 -- and extends almost through today -- the most recent post is of a photo taken some 48 hours ago at Facebook's headquarters. Click on any year in between and you can zero in on a particular point in the Facebook founder's life. You can see "highlights" from a particular year, or browse updates month by month.

"It's a great way to discover all the stuff people have done their whole life," Zuckerberg said of Timeline when announcing it at the f8 conference in October.

Timeline gives users greater control over the appearance of their Facebook profiles, enabling them to select a photo that appears at the top of the page and giving them the ability to feature some information more prominently, while hiding other updates.

"We want to design a place that feels like your home. Where you tell story online is very personal. You spend a lot of time curating it. We want to make timeline a place you're proud to call your home," Zuckerberg said at f8. "It's a completely new aesthetic for Facebook. It gives you the ability to curate all your stories so you can express who you really are."

The information showcased on users' Timelines ranges from life-altering to mundane. Thanks to Facebook's new "frictionless' sharing feature, which publishes to Facebook any action a user takes on approved third-party apps, Timeline might present the last few songs a person has listened to or the details of a recent workout side-by-side with news about getting married or having a child.

Facebook encourages users to go back in time an add "life events" to their personal chronologies to make Timelines more complete: the site offers a pre-defined list of "life event" templates, such as "bought a home" and "broke a bone," that can be added instantly to the chronology.

Facebook is giving users a seven-day grace period before which it will automatically update their profile to the new Timeline.

Facebook wrote in a blog post,

When you upgrade to timeline, you'll have seven days to review everything that appears on your timeline before anyone else can see it. You can also choose to publish your timeline at any time during the review period. If you decide to wait, your timeline will go live automatically after seven days. Your new timeline will replace your profile, but all your stories and photos will still be there.

Though many users took advantage of a Facebook shortcut to update their profiles ahead of Timeline's official release, others have been griping about the change and demanding a way to opt out of the new look.

"I FEEL EXPOSED [...] I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO REMOVE." one user wrote in response to Facebook's blog post announcing the changes. A slew of other commenters chimed in asking if they could remove Timeline, while some who had used the new pages praised them as a positive change.

  • New 'Cover' Photo

While past iterations of the Facebook profile have featured a customizable photo that sat near the upper left of the page, users can now top their profile with a large "Cover" photo that stretches across the user's Timeline. This will be in addition to the Profile Picture, which will act as an avatar of sorts for News Feed updates and posting on others' walls.

  • New Layout For Updates Posted

The Timeline is wider than the old profile and displays content in two columns. Posts appear in a continuous stream in chronological order, from top (most recent) to bottom (oldest). The layout is very visual and emphasizes large pictures and important events.

  • Yearly, Monthly Navigation

The Timeline will feature a navigation panel along the right side of the page. This list of years, which can expand to display months, allows users to quickly jump to a spot in their timeline and view their posts from that moment in time. You can also manually scroll up and down through the timeline to search activity by month and year.

  • Mobile Interface

The new mobile interface on the Facebook app will also feature the Timeline re-design.

  • Private Log

The private log stores all your facebook activity so you can choose what to share in your timeline and with whom.

  • Apps In Your TImeline

Apps--including what you're listening to, reading, cooking, watching, etc.--will showcase your interests and activities in digest form so that friends can quickly catch up on what you're into and share with you simultaneously. For example, if you're listening to a song on a Rdio that's synched with Facebook, that activity will appear as an update in your friends' Ticker widget. That friend can then click your update, start listening to the same song, and even chat with you while doing so.

  • Release In "A Few Weeks"

Timeline won't be available to users for "a few weeks," so savor that old profile while you still can (or start to get excited for the new one!). Anything and everything I put on FB is meant to be seen. Why is this such a surprise? Don't say or share that which is private.

It'll take some getting used to, but I like the new profile layout & it was fun to figure out how to personalize it. We put together a set of panoramic photos on Destination360 that people can download and use for free as cover photos on FB; it looks really cool if you can feature a place you love, and travel photos seem to use the space really nicely.

I am changing my facebook timeline to fix the space /time continuum in my favor..

I went to timeline yesterday, it's not as bad as I thought. The reality is that FB is free and we make a choice to be part of it or not. People need to choose wisely what they post on FB. For those who are not happy, FB is not obligatory. Either don't join or cancel your acct.

I'm not a day to day facebooker, I use it mainly for keeping intouch with friends I dont get to see muc because of distance. But I only have one question, is everything marked as friends only still friends only? if so I'm happy with that (mainly cos my FB friends are friends and not acquaintances).

I wish Facebook would STOP trying to "IMPROVE" my Site-who wanted this? Not me! Every time we get an "IMPROVEMENT" the service becomes more personally invasive, works less well and has additional dialogs you have to search for to reset to a resemblance of what you want, personally and security/privacy wise.

Perhaps Zuckerberg & Cox should get some new hobbies, since they have this much time on their hands. The REAL reason Facebook introduced "this exciting new upgrade"?

More of YOUR information to sell...it's ALWAYS about the MONEY...haven't you figured that out yet, America?

So, if something's broke, you throw it away? If the pressure's on, do you just buckle? Consider...if enough people say "Enough" to Zuckerberg & Company, maybe they'll stop trying "to fix it for us" (we all know what the real agenda is). But, just in case, I've built up a couple of other Social sites, that so far, are less "quirky" and invasive. If I ever have a cause that needs determined support, I promise not to bother you with it.

Timeline is easy to navigate and gives more control, not less, to FB users. I've had mine up for a couple months now and love being able to see and access everything I've posted since day one on FB. With the new format it is easier to know what you've shared and with who. You can change your privacy setting with each post.
You can't please everyone but Timeline is an exponential improvement in this social media experience.

If the Facebook route isn't for you, but you want to preserve your family memories/stories in a unique way, then try www.SaveEveryStep.com. It's free to use and allows you to capture events (with words & pictures) on a chronological timeline. You can also share online with friends and family. It's very cool and easy on the eye. Try it. I don't think people realize that all this personal informational history is like cocaine for advertisers. You may have control over what other FB users see, but you don't have any control over being manipulated into participating in the greatest targeted marketing invention ever created. Suckers.

It's turning into myspace. People left myspace to facebook because facebook was simpler. So now they emulate the site they replaced. WTF?!
