'Real Housewives of Atlanta' Kandi Burruss' Mom Sheds Light On HIV/AIDS Among 50-And-Over Set (VIDEO)

Kandi Burruss Mom

When your daughter launches a line of sex toys and hosts a weekly relationship show online, you can't help but know the ins and outs of today's dating scene.

But real housewife of Atlanta Kandi Burruss' mom, Joyce Jones, says it was Oprah who actually taught her one of the most important lessons she's learned about dating over the age of 50: being vigilant about her increased risk for HIV and AIDS.

"Oprah had a segment on her program about women over 40, in the 45-year range, that had contracted HIV, and they were saying that women at that particular age were one of the largest groups contracting the disease, especially black women," Jones says.

It's a fact that she mentioned on a recent episode of the show and one that she keeps in mind, particularly now as she ventures out into the world of online dating.

According to an article in the November/December issue of the journal MEDSURG Nursing, rates of HIV/AIDS as well as other STDS such as herpes, syphilis and human papilloma virus (HPV) are on the rise in the 50-and-over set.

Jones believes it's a product of a "don't ask, don't tell" mentality that many boomers have adopted. "I really feel like people don't want to know, if they like somebody that well," she says. "The young kids get so involved and so in love, and women my age, some of them are so desperate that they don't want to know."

Older men, she says, discount the risk they're facing (and posing) by having unprotected sex, since pregnancy is considerably less a factor. "Speaking as an older woman and talking with other women, men that age feel like they don't have to use condoms and women feel like they're safe, especially if it's a well-kept man. They just automatically assume the looks make them okay," Jones says.

The danger, she believes, lies with men her age having sex with younger women, who in turn are having sex with younger men, who are quite possibly having sex with other men, creating a chain of partners that puts women like her at risk.

Lisa Jeffers and Mary DiBartolo, who co-authored the MEDSURG study, point to ageism and social stigmas for the spike in incidence and as the reason that HIV and other STDs aren't on health care providers' radar.

"Unfortunately, the common misconception still persists that people over 50 are no longer sexually active," they wrote. "As a result, health care providers often do not discuss risky sexual behaviors and STD prevention with middle-aged and older adults."

Other experts blame boomers' more liberal sexual attitudes, high divorce rates and an increased use of online dating services, like the one that Jones has joined to find a mate. Though she says she's had many men interested in meeting her, none have fit the bill just yet, but when the time comes, she believes an HIV test is a must.

Sorry but I had to read this and I sat here as long as I could, The problem is not the age, everyone need to be tested, people can sit around and point fingers at any group they please (Black, White, Gay or not) but the truth is anyone can contract this disease no matter the age, If we all take a active roll in our health I truly believe that we can cut way down on the number of new cases out there, I’m over 40 and I know for me I get checked because this is my health and its up to me to stay on top of what’s going on with me, Turn a blind eye I don’t think so …..Once again there are a bunch of people out here that just don’t get it.

That is frightenly true. I like older men, but they turn a blind eye to the dangers. I've heard of an increase of HIV in elderly complexs also.

I am in this group and I have separated from my husband of 20 years. This is one reason that I have closed the shop. A few minutes of ecstacy is not worth a lifetime of pain.

Many Black people are skeptical about going to a caucasian heath care provider. For example I have a female friend who we will call M who is a patient at South Florida Evaluation Treatment Center 18680 SW 376 Street, Florida City, Florida 33034. A caucasian doctor, dr. solomon is over medicating her and is giving her the dangerous drug clozaril which is making her sick, yet he is forcing her to take it along with other drugs I need advice as to how to get him to stop using her as a guinea pig. My email is trubkgd1@aol.com Others should also write to that facility and report him.

Tell her not to go to her appointments ,he can't treat her if she doesn't keep her appointments. Was it that hard to figure out. She should also look for another physician .

Mrs. Jones is correct the people in their 50's/60's today are the original Clubbers from the late 70's -80's and sex was free and rampant. Many are dead from the first wave of AIDS that wiped out so many talented people and many friends. But many more have lived and survived with the HIV+ virus. A segment of them do not disclose their status to their partner, which is wrong but you can't make folks tell what they don't want to tell. It is imperative that ALL WOMEN who are sexually active to use condoms, they are available for females as well as males. I applaud Mrs.Jones for making a statement that is true and can help save lives.

Honestly, Yaw'll ignorance is costly & we have to be responsible for us. We know that in the heat of passion folks can forget but it can be costly. Today people are afraid to ask questions for fear of rejection but you cannot fear when it comes to your own body & as African Americans it appears in our culture we aren't listening at all & we should. Actually, there was a study done recently on this & it's a fact that other countries are bringing down those Aids cases but in America it appears to be not the case, we still have the mentality of not me. We need to wake up!

Perhaps they began practicing safe sex after having their child. Many women encounter HIV+ born babies and mothers in the hospital when they give birth. That will make anyone change their sexual practices. Better late than never when it comes to using condoms.

Ignorance is the reason why black people in general have higher rate of HIV. Sex is not the ONLY way to contract and/or spread the disease. You can contract HIV through sharing needles. No one in the black community ever talks about "shooting up" although we all know someone that has been addicted to heroin. No one ever talks about prostitution. So many men have sex regularly with prostitutes, who are usually drug users. Drug

A man in jail here in Indianapolis was dating women on a free dating site and he has HIV they say and he wasn't telling the women....some of which after dating him had saw him leave bars with other women. It has been all over the news.
He went up for a bail reduction hearing last week and they increased his bail instead.

She didn't even mention the "Cougar" factor where some older women are doing the younger men that are able to sleep with not only the young women that they say are doing guys that are doing other guys and the older women.
