The New York Times redrew the printing of its front page, after news broke that legendary writer Christopher Hitchens had died Thursday night.

The New York Times told Poynter that the presses did not stop to include the story of Hitchens' death, as was originally reported by the Atlantic's Nicholas Jackson. According to Poynter, the story was confirmed before deadline and the front page was redrawn to "change the line-up of stories."

The Atlantic's Nicholas Jackson wrote early Friday morning that The New York Times redrew its front page to include news of Hitchens' death. Jackson wrote, "That is, the most influential newspaper in the world has put its work and printing process on hold to make room on the front page for the obituary of a single man."

Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010. He passed away late Thursday night from pneumonia, a complication of the esophageal cancer he had. Hitchens was named a contributing editor at Vanity Fair in 1992. He has authored two dozen books and wrote for publications such as The Nation, the Atlantic Monthly, Slate, Harper’s, The Washington Post and The Huffington Post.

The Washington Post published Hitchens' obituary online early Friday morning. Fishbowl DC wrote that when the post went live, it still had filler text that said "cause, place of death" in place of the actual details. The student-run blog out of the Missouri School of Journalism J-School Buzz, posted a screen shot of the error online.

"So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."

Shakespeare declared his own immortality. He didn't wait to find out if the afterlife thing would work out. I think I will go out and buy one of Hitchens' books in a brick and mortar bookstore.

God is Not great but Christopher Hitchens is definitely is,one of my greatest authors ever , I Love you Christopher,I seriously do,He wouldn't thank me for RIP, with it's implication of an afterlife, so instead I'll say I'm sorry he's gone but I'm glad that he lived.

Nuts. He was razor sharp and to the point, which allowed him to pinpoint the flaws in others reasoning and dissect them cleanly.

You Tube has videos of several of his debates against various creationists and intelligent design promoters. They are a joy to behold. I especially enjoyed seeing Dinesh D'Sousa being made to look as small and silly as he really is, which Hitchens did with the same speed and ease with which he could make a glass of scotch disappear. :o)

RIP, Hitch.

I have been thinking about him all morning. He was my favorite writer, and I feel lucky to have read his work. I even had the honor as a bartender of pouring him a few Johnny Walkers over the years.

R.I.P. Hitch.

The NYT stopping the presses. No greater honor can be paid to an honest and honorable journalist.

He is the first celebrity figure that I ever shed tears for. I am not quite sure why. Maybe respect or admiration for being the type of person that I wish I had the balls, the conviction to be. While I didn't agree with everything he said, I agreed with most, and for the things I didn't agree with him on, he sure made me rethink my position with his honesty and wit. He became a hero and I feel great sadness with his passing. RIP Hitch.

Tim Russert was my first, but Hitchens seems like just as great a loss.

I will miss Hitch. He was brilliant, absolutely. What a mind. What conviction. Not ashamed to say that if I had ever had the opportunity to meet him, I would have collapsed in orgasmic ecstasy:) and he would have hated that!

I will miss you dearly Hitch. Your writing has inspired me for years. Your debates, an intellectual foreplay. I am glad your pain is over. Rest in peace.
