Sherrod Brown: Ryan-Wyden Medicare Plan Is Just 'Lipstick On The Pig'

Ryan Wyden Medicare

Posted: 12/16/11 10:34 AM ET

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) may have reached across the aisle to come up with a new bipartisan plan for Medicare reform, but that isn't allaying fears from some Democrats that the overhaul will actually end up dismantling the program.

On Friday, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) became the latest to speak out against Ryan's blueprint, which the Chairman of the House Budget Committee drafted with the help of Brown's colleague, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)

"This is dressed up and looks a little pretty -- a little lipstick on the pig here but it really is not much different than Ryan number one," Brown said Friday on the Bill Press radio show, according to The Hill. "Ryan gets this reputation as being this thinker that's got new ideas. It's just the same recycled privatization stuff that Gingrich did in 1995 with Medicare."

Here's how the Washington Post describes the difference between the Ryan-Wyden plan and Ryan's divisive original proposal, which would have changed Medicare into a voucher system:

Seniors would still receive a set amount of money from the government to buy insurance, as they would under the Medicare proposal Ryan included in the budget blueprint that passed the House last year. But the new approach would let that subsidy, known as premium support, rise or fall along with the actual cost of the policies -- creating more protection for seniors and saving potentially far less in the budget.

Ryan-Wyden also creates an insurance exchange that would allow Medicare recipients to choose from a variety of private insurance options. Some have expressed concern over this provision's ability to prevent "waste, fraud, and abuse," while others have said it will only weaken Medicare's "bargaining power," while making it a frailer overall market for the consumer.

In a statement Thursday, the White House also announced its opposition to Ryan-Wyden proposal.

"We are concerned that Wyden-Ryan, like Congressman Ryan’s earlier proposal, would undermine, rather than strengthen, Medicare," said White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer. "The Wyden-Ryan scheme could, over time, cause the traditional Medicare program to 'wither on the vine' because it would raise premiums, forcing many seniors to leave traditional Medicare and join private plans. And it would shift costs from the government to seniors. At the end of the day, this plan would end Medicare as we know it for millions of seniors. Wyden-Ryan is the wrong way to reform Medicare."

I believe you are right.

The more religious they act the tighter you had better hold your purse and watch your pockets and watch what they are doing. They can thump on the bible with one hand and steal from you with the other.

Wyden was on Rattigan this afternoon. I wonder if he knows what he is doing helping this little boy Ryan gain stature again. Rat a gain really was praising the idea. Wyden I hope, hears A LOT from his constituents.

I saw the same program...I don't know much about sen. Wyden, but I know I saw him on television during the healthcare debate trying to push the exchange idea..But I agree with you..I hope his constituents press him on this...And I'm surprised he partnered with Ryan on this.

I think it is that partnering that bothers me the most. Ryan trying to get back in the good so he can be re-elected.

As one of his constituents, I can assure you that he IS hearing a lot, and most of what he is hearing is somewhat less than complimentary.

Apparently Wyden has been overwhelmed with calls from his constituents who, to put it politely, are furious with him...he tried to smooth things over on our local talk radio station this morning. It didn't work. He has lost our support.

There is no shortage of "Democrats" are are willing to sell their souls for a pot of porridge.

Whatever Paul Ryan put in Wyden's M etamucil is working.

Democrats are getting away with all sorts of things because their is no tea party equivalence in the party.

All may change as soon as #OWS goes political.

Let's see, we have the Government give out vouchers that get turned over to private insurers. Looks like socialcapitalism to me. Why should the Government support these private insurers, they're not even neeeded ? I see huge savings without them. It's a very profitable business to them, that's why they fight against it so vigorously.

They could have something Similar to Medicare for all. They would still have to have people working to keep track of all of it. Very few jobs would be lost. Just the multimillion dollar CEOs.

I sent a blistering protest note to Sen. Wyden yesterday. I consider blindsiding your colleague on a central, contentious and game-changing issue like Medicare, after the national blow back this summer, to be an act of disloyalty and treachery. By all indication and judging from the swift reaction from Democratic colleagues, they were blindsided by Wyden who is probably looking for a cozy job with the health insurance or health industries after the Senate.

In other words Republicans still want to can Medicare and give senior citizens a voucher to buy insurance in the open market. And after they cancel Obamacare seniors won't be able to buy insurance because Obamacare makes it illegal to deny people coverage for pre-existing conditions and most seniors have pre-existing conditions. So they will be giving seniors a voucher to be able to buy ---NOTHING. Do not vote Republican if you care about your health.

Only when they are well fed! When a wild hog comes running down your trail, you had better be able to jump. Your are not it's equal then. Pigs are smarter than us in some ways, like figuring out the lay of the land. The best route between upstate South Carolina and North Carolina was laid out by a North Carolinian, Solomon Jones, who drove his pigs to Greenville, SC, and followed them back home. Jones Gap is named for him. It's got less grade than any of the modern roads, but fortunately is a state park now.
