Wonder Woman And Other Comic Book Heroines Featured In African Breast Cancer Awareness Ads (PHOTOS)

The battle against breast cancer just got some super power!

Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Storm and She-Hulk have teamed up to tackle breast cancer awareness for a new ad campaign released in the African nation of Mozambique.

The renditions of the extra busty heroines checking for potentially cancerous lumps were drawn by artist Maisa Chaves for ALCC Associacao da Luta Contra o Cancer) and are sure to grab plenty of attention. But ultimately the ads are a call to action for young women to perform their own self examinations--the idea being, if Cat Woman can get breast cancer, so can you.

The ads read: "When we talk about breast cancer, there's no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor."

Using comic book heroines is a clear (and clever) way to target a younger audience, which was also the objection behind the controversial "I Love Boobies" bracelets. And while cases of breast cancer are rare in women under the age of 30, early detection is key.

This isn't the first time ALCC has used shock value to push their cause. The company previously released ads depicting creepy insects under the skin of a woman's breasts. Eek! We get the message--let's start feeling our ladies, ladies!

Okay, I'm not trying to be funny but two things come to mind. Literacy rates among women in African nations make information distribution a challenge. Self-exams are suppose to be done when the breast is naked.

How many women getting this information are going to not read or not be able to read the bottom of the poster and walk away thinking that an effective self-exam can be done while using the hands/fingers to feel the breast over clothes and a bra?

You are taking this too literally/seriously. It is an awareness raising campaign to draw attention to an important issue. It is not a technical instruction manual on how to examine your breasts.

I expect that the goal is to draw women's attention to the quite unusual characters and inspire conversation and enquiry, so even if a woman cannot read she can be drawn to the imagery and ask about it.
