Muslim Christmas Celebrations Recognize Jesus In Islam

First Posted: 12/16/2011 5:22 pm Updated: 02/21/2012 4:38 pm

Ani Zonneveld recently invited a dozen families to her Los Angeles home for a festive Christmas party, where guests mingled over shiny red and white desserts while others belted Christmas carols and kids crafted tree ornaments for her family's brightly lit evergreen.

There's little unusual about such a gathering this time of year, except for one thing: Zonneveld, a practicing Muslim, had invited mostly Muslim friends, and she had a unique highlight for the evening: a lesson for the kids on the role of Jesus in Islam.

"I think there are a lot of Muslims that celebrate Christmas, but they do it quietly. We believe in not leading that double life," says Zonneveld, 49. "Celebrating Christmas is not really a contradiction to Islam because Jesus is our prophet, too."

As the most-commercialized religious holiday in the United States, Christmas can be a difficult time for Muslim families with kids who grow up surrounded by the holiday's traditions, from Santa and songs to Christmas trees and gifts. It's not uncommon for Muslim parents to take on some cultural aspects of the holiday to help their children feel included. Yet, Muslims such as Zonneveld are taking it further and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

This is the fourth year that Zonneveld -- a singer-songwriter who was born in Malaysia and co-founded a national network called Muslims for Progressive Values -- has hosted such a Christmas get-together for her 13-year-old daughter and family friends.

At her party, she says parents talked with their kids about the "similarities and differences between the Islamic and Christian Jesus," to teach them that Islam is "not all about Muhammad."

The comparisons and contrasts include Muslims believing in Jesus as a prophet and in his miraculous birth, but not seeing him as divine or the son of God. The Quran, in which Jesus is referred to in Arabic as "Isa," also says that Jesus was not killed or crucified, but that God raised him to heaven. Similar to the Christian doctrine of the Second Coming, Islamic teaching also says that Jesus will return to earth near the end of time.

"It would be typical of mosques to have a sermon on Jesus at this time of year, praising him as one of the great prophets but distinguishing Muslim belief from Christian belief, as Muslims must believe and love Jesus Christ as a prophet and Messiah," says Ihsan Bagby, an Islamic Studies professor at the University of Kentucky who researches American mosques. "But in terms of practice and observation of Christmas, that's an on-going debate among Muslims."

For Muslims such as Shireen Ahmed, a 34-year-old social worker and mother of four who lives in the Toronto suburbs, the holiday is a time to teach her kids about their religion and how to respect other religions. While Ahmed does not celebrate Christmas at home, she says she is "open and interested" in the idea. In recent years, she has observed Christmas by attending Catholic Midnight Mass at the invitation of friends.

"I love the Mass, I find it inspiring and uplifting," says Ahmed, who doesn't have a Christmas tree or decorations but does let her young children take photos with Santa. "I'm not accepting of Jesus as the Son of God, I don't take communion, but I will attend, I will respect, and I will kneel when they kneel."

"I look at it from a cultural tolerance perspective. We live in a society that's diverse," she says, adding that she recently used the Christmas season as a chance to talk about Jesus to her 7-year-old. "I explained the Holy Trinity, and my son said 'What do you mean? Allah doesn't have a father or son.' I said "that's what we believe, but others don't and you have to respect that."

Islamic doctrine is strictly monotheistic and some Muslim scholars view any significant celebration of any prophet as risky. Nonetheless, in many Muslim countries, large celebrations mark Mawlid, the lunar holiday for the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, so celebrating Jesus isn't without precedent.

Nouman Safi, a 36-year-old filmmaker who lives in Chicago, says that one reason he doesn't celebrate Christmas is because of its date. Most Biblical scholars agree that Jesus was not born in the winter. Safi, who has four elementary school-aged kids, says he uses the holiday to talk to coworkers and Christian friends about his Islamic beliefs.

"I have spoken to many Christian Americans who have no idea that we believe in Jesus and that we believe he is the savior. We believe will come back and unite everyone together," says Safi. "I say to them, 'I hope you know he is as holy to us as he is to you. We don't believe he is the Son of God, but he is a very important prophet.'"

I would imagine Muslim Santa would look more like Saladin, less like Burl Ives.

BTW, do Muslim kids get presents for Eid or Ramadan, or are there other gift-giving holidays?

Frankly, We'd all be better off if we just went back to celebrating our festivals around the turning of the seasons. I'm all for bagging the xmas tree and making it the solstice tree. This whole xtian vs islam thing figures out just like an episode of south park.

This is something very new to me...I am a Christian and while I have heard some Muslim Leaders speak about Christ it was only as a prophet and not the Messiah. I suppose this is the same as some Christians celebrating the Passover. There are many things that are true to the Bible, Quran and Hinduism all talk about the great flood among other things. Bear in mind that as Christians we believe and accept Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior.

I AM A MUSLIM, AND , I AM 55 YEARS OLD, AND ALWAYS CELEBERATE CHRISTMAS AND BELIEVE IN CHRIST, THE QURAN CLEARLY STATED, THAT IF, ANYONE DO NOT BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, THEY ARE NOT TRUE MUSLIMS, MUSLIMS ALWAYS BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST AND THE BIBLE, THE ONLY PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET DOES NOT BELIEVE OR CELEBERATE CHRISTMAS, IS JEWISH PEOPLE !

Is He just a prophet or Emanuel (GOD with us). That is a BIG difference.

What's a "pophet"?
09:17 AM on 02/04/2012
Jesus is NOT a prophet!! He is the Son of the One and Living true God! He is the Messiah, the Alpha, the Omega!! "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, NO ONE comes to the Father but by Me." John 14:6
10:45 AM on 02/04/2012
excatly, you said it yourself "No one comes to the Father(God) but by me." (Jesus being the messenger of God.
12:30 PM on 02/04/2012
He is not a messenger is the true Living God. He is apart of the Triune Godhead, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. So, that means Jesus is Lord!

' I said "that's what we believe, but others don't and you have to respect that."

what a great concept, too bad people of all faiths do not think this way, we would all get along so much better.
10:38 PM on 01/20/2012
Wishful thinking, and I for one am hoping for that to happen...but, I am afraid it's not possible.
Christ is about living a life for each other...muhammed is about taking life.
The true Disciples of Christ as few, few, few that they are will do as Christ.
On the other hand...the true followers of muhammed will do as muhammed taught them to do.
Unfortunately, if it weren't for the American government....islam would kill all of Christ's Disciples, for they will not kill....please don't connect historical psychopaths that called themselves "christians" and shed blood like muhammed did.
...just sayin'

It would be beneficial to you to educate yourself through primary sources. Taking at face value and repeating things you've heard from others is allowing yourself to be manipulated by people who are ok with twisting things around and bending the truth to accomplish their own agendas. The Quran says the following about Christians: ""...and nearest among them in love to the believers will you find those who say, 'We are Christians,' because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant" (5:82)." The passages commonly used by those who want to deface Islam are taken out of context, for example the first part of the phrase is used, "Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them," and the second part is left out, "But if they retire from you, and did not fight you, and they offer you peace; then God does not make for you a way against them." This is a verse about the right to defend yourself against oppressors, not a command to search out non muslims and kill them. In fact, Muslims are NOT ALLOWED to aggress against a people who show them no aggression, and non-muslims living in muslim land, under sharia, are to be afforded protection and freedom to practice their own religion.
08:46 AM on 02/04/2012
This is shameful, please do not call yourself a follower of Christ and disrespect other religions like this.

I grew up having to sing "Christ the saviour is born" in music class in preparation for the Christmas concert at the big local church. Well, I didn't sing it, because at 11 years old, I knew Jesus was not the saviour of all mankind, and he wasn't God's begotten son, because I'm a Muslim. Now, having read the Quran, where God mentions the Trinity only to condemn the principle of it, I have a hard time with Christmas as a religious celebration because it borrows from so much Norse (gifts from an airborne sleigh, holly on the door) and ancient German pagan mythology (Christmas trees). God's very clear about how He wants to be worshiped - basically do what Jesus did: pray, fast, and put your forehead on the ground.
09:47 AM on 01/11/2012
Glad that you mentioned Christ...and yes. He did pray, fast...and did a lot of things....His witnesses called them miracles.
Such as heal the sick, feed the hungry, gave sight to the blind, cured the lepers, made the paralytic walk, cured the insane, saved a woman from sure death by stoning, calmed a storm, walked on water, rose people from death, gave hope to the hopeless....and much more.
Then He was, hunted down like a criminal, beaten, spat on, tortured, flogged to near death, crucified, and pierced with a lance for good measure...He was killed.
People saw this happen to Him...an innocent man killed, and put in a tomb.
Only to come back to life...He then dwelled among them and hundreds more saw Him.
After His final departure, He said He was leaving behind a gift, and that gift is TRUTH....
Many people were killed thereafter for not recanting what they saw...So. When you start talking about pagans, and sleighs, etc. You miss the point.
06:13 PM on 01/11/2012
Jesus did indeed do a lot of the things you mentioned, but only with the help of God, not on his own free will and ability.... God gave him the power to heal the lepers and all the things he did, otherwise we would as Muslims have to accept him as god if he did these miraculous things on his own. We don't believe he was killed, a likeness of him was crucified and so the Jews thought they killed him, when they did not. He was raised up to the heavens and will come back to earth again as a human to tell people that they have gone away from his teachings and he will kill the pigs and tell people that he never told them he was god and to worship him... the bible never said Jesus is god and to worship him. The traditions of most of the non-muslim holidays stem from pagan traditions, which anyone who worships god should abandon since pagans are the worse of people since they don't worship one true god. Think about the Santa Claus people lie to their kids about, he supposedly knows when you're asleep, he knows when you've been bad or good, etc and he is able to go great distances in a matter of mere minutes/seconds....all of the qualities of "Santa" are actually qualities that only God can have.... you are giving a human the qualities of our creator.

that is strange because I would call Christians the greatest victims of fraud...and that all the story of Jesus's life...was based on a God from another religion ...their Holidays were the spoils of theft of other religions..so basically I consider the Christian Church a celibration of parasites
09:47 AM on 01/11/2012
Christ was about Love, Peace, Hope, Love of the enemy, Love of your neighbor etc.
Compare that to muhammed, can you say the same about a military/political/religious man who sought and gained power by killing people???
Then he crowned himself prophet....and dictated the qua'ran which in effect marginalizes Christ. "condemning the trinity" is part of muhammed's distortion and lies...along with not tolerance for questions, contradictions, opposition, ...need say satire?...muhammed's goal was military/political/religious world power, and his followers continue to follow along 1,400 years later.
I need to ask a REAL muslim this question: Did muhammed kill?
The answer will help clarify as to who is who, and why things are the way they are between Christ and muhammed.
One has a bloody history of taking life, the other has a history of giving life....and you are quibbling about rituals????
Look around, turn your TV on and see the bloodshed, and killings that are happening on account of the "muhammed way"....
Believe what you want, or not want...just stop the killing!

...just saying

Islam Christmas is quite fun. They even have a theme song and here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msp-gbHWKhc&ob=av3n Sometimes, the men are covered with nothing but raisins -- it's sacredly blasphemous :3
02:52 PM on 01/05/2012
No you cannot celebrate Christmas as a Muslim. Yes Jesus is important but we don't celebrate the Prophet Muhammads birthday so why celebrate Jesus' fake birthday, which even many Christians know is a pagan holiday. While it is good to give dawah and to tell about Jesus in Islam to actually celebrate Christmas is the same as being Christian and takes you out of Islam.
12:18 AM on 01/10/2012
It is not our duty to judge who is Muslim and who is not. That is Allah SWT's job only. As Muslims we should be respectful of others beliefs and not judge so harshly.
02:05 PM on 01/10/2012
So don't point out Shirk when it is obvious? I'm not saying anyone isn't a Muslim but celebrating, actually celebrating, christmas is Haram and obviously Shirk. Spending time with your christian family is fine but please show me ANYONE who says celebrating Christmas is fine.
06:25 PM on 01/11/2012
The poster wasn't judging them, but stating the truth, no muslim can be a muslim if he accepts Christmas as a holiday for him/her to celebrate... if a muslim were to start worshipping a tree in front of you, would you still call him a muslim or ignore it and simply say it's not for us to judge? We are supposed to help guide each other to the straight path, this is why Islam is in so much trouble...people no longer know the religion.
06:22 PM on 01/11/2012
Ameen... if you are celebrating Christmas, you are really are on the wrong path and don't know Islam and I would really question their true motives for doing this b/c we don't need to celebrate it to build a stronger community with our non-muslim neighbors...certainly they wouldn't celebrate any eid with us. Your comment is 100% correct! If you accept Christmas, you accept Jesus as your savior and if you claim to be a muslim, you need real guidance, b/c one who does so is on the wrong path.

Christmas is a time of celebration whether in a religious or non religious way. You cannot be a Christian by just celebrating Christmas. Back home, my friends and I go and break fast during Ramadhan but we are not muslims. We just enjoy doing it.

I will be glad when the day comes that Christianity's name will be changed to a worldly global name and that so called Christians will finally see the Light. Islam that Is!!!

Interesting....I have concluded that IF muslims were to just give up one of muhammed's appetites.
Which is the blood thirst...then THEY'D be the best christians....then as they come closer to Christ they would fullfill His prophesy..."every knee will bow before the Truth"
...just hoping...for Peace IS our ONLY hope.
As for your distortion of what is "light"....you are kidding right?
...muhammed was one that lived by sword, how can he be the light of the world?
...Christ IS the light of the World....too bad you are blinded by it, and see darkness as the answer.
12:40 AM on 01/03/2012
That is a misconception. None of the people who embraced Islam during Prophet Muhammad time did so because of force. They embraced the faith on His ettiquette. Anyway, I was raised in a typical christian church and after I grew up I embraced Islam. I know the bible better than you as I used to memorize scriptures as a young woman. Islam is the very same revelation given to Moses but you would never know what to believe in christian churches because it all depends on what the pastor teaches. The scriptures clearly state that swine is forbidden but christians eat it until it kills them or until the doctor eventually puts them on meds. The scriptures clearly tell you that women should pray with their heads covered and that it is a shame not to do so. The scriptues clearly tell you not to cut tree out of the forest and decorate them but xtians still do so, Christianity is a raquetter. It will come to an end soon.

I worshiped with Muslims in a mosque in Hebron, Palestine in July. It was a first for me. I experienced the depth and richness of Muslims at prayer. My creeky knees labored and bending head down to meet the floor was a challenge. I grew a bit from that experience. I may even be a better Christian because of it. As I was leaving the mosque the imam invited me to become a Muslim. In a world of religious pluralism, and no religious preferences - visits, dialogue, and understanding are key ingredients. Was it Rodney King who said, "We need to learn to live with each other"?

How about yoga too? Same effect probably.
08:13 AM on 01/02/2012
No, I don't think that you can make a good comparison between Muslims at prayer and, for example, Hindus practicing Yoga. Muslims are addressing their prayers to, I believe, Allah. Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग yóga) is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility while meditating on Supersoul. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. While there is physical exercise in Yoga, it is not represented as a posture of prayer, as it is for devoted Muslims. Yoga is more a system of exercises practiced to promote control of the body and mind.

Did muhammed ever kill anyone?

A simple yes, or a simple no......please spare me the time...thank you

Of course he did. It would be strange for the general of army to let the soldiers do all the fighting on the battlefield.

Recognize Jesus In Islam and acknowledging Jesus for who He really is are two difference coins.

Muhammad taught there is only one Divine Being in God. He denied the Deity of Jesus, saying He was just a man - a great prophet, but not the Divine Son of God. (Qur’an 4:162-171; 6:100,101; 19:88-92)

The Bible says Jesus is Divine.

John 1:1,14 - Jesus (the Word) was God, was with God in the beginning, and became flesh to dwell among men as a man.

Colossians 2:9 - In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

John 20:28,29 - Thomas called Jesus "my Lord and my God." Jesus pronounced a blessing on all others who believe the same.

Islam denies that Jesus was crucified, that He died as a sacrifice for sin, and that He arose from the dead. (Qur’an 4:156,157)

Matthew 20:17-19 - Jesus predicted He would be crucified, then rise again.

Matthew 26:28 - He claimed that He would shed His blood for the remission of man's sins.

John 19:31-35 - John claimed to be an eyewitness to Jesus' crucifixion.

Islam is nothing more than a false religion.

ask your Creator, the One who sees and Hears all, to protect you from satan.

jesus did not teach the trinity, paul introduced the trinity and the original sin, among other things. the trinity is nowhere in the bible. you are reading the bible with paul's interpretations already in your head.

the first commandment is to worship God, and only God. it is not to worship jesus. jesus taught people to worship God, he never asked people to wroship him, and he did not worship himself, he worshiped God.

so do what jesus did, worship and pray to God, if you really follow jesus.
