Zooey Deschanel: 'New Girl' Golden Globe Nomination Reaction Very Jess-Like

Zooey Deschanel

It's easy to get Zooey Deschanel and her "New Girl" character Jess confused: they're both cute, bubbly and blissfully awkward. Or, in a word, adorkable. So when Deschanel earned a Golden Globe nomination on Thursday for playing Jess, it should come as no surprise that she reacted in a very Jess-like way.

The actress/singer/human rainbow spoke to a number of outlets after the nominations were announced, telling the LA Times that her reaction was classic slapstick.

"She would totally trip and fall and walk into a wall," Deschanel said of her character. "I know that because she's like me and that's sort of what I did. We worked a really long day yesterday so I was so tired this morning. I accidentally punched my wrist into a wall. I tend to walk into things when I'm tired I forget where my body ends and the world begins."

That long working day must have rendered temporarily silent, too, because after the nomination, she tweeted, "omg. OMG. speechless!"

"New Girl" was also nominated for Best Comedy, giving showrunner Liz Meriwether reason to celebrate.

"We're both like big nerds, so there was a lot of nerdy love," Deschanel told The Hollywood Reporter of their commiseration.

words cannot describe how utterly sick of her I am. hipster and twee does not equal nerd. stop trying to brand geekery into something it's not!

I agree she has created an appealing character but as far as star weight goes her show stinks.Recorded first several episodes due to hype but no longer worth my dvr space. Sorry

The word 'adorkable' makes me want to punch a kitten in the face.

For those of us who do not enjoy Ms. Deschanel or her acting skills, I would encourage you to watch "500 Day's of Summer". I think this particular movie helps anyone to uncderstand her appeal.

I'm a female and I happen to agree with you. Actually, Meg Ryan runs a close second.

I like her, but the show isn't very funny. I have it recorded and watch it last out of everything then ask myself why I just wasted that half hour. I really try to like it. Can't imagine why it's nominated when other shows are actually funny.

"Actors", they act. You never know what is real and what is scripted with them. That's why few of us hung out with the "drama" crowd in high school.

She's annoying. And I don't understand the appeal of this show. Saw the premiere and once was enough.

I agree somewhat. It's the kind of show that you can't explain why its funny until you find yourself laughing hysterically while watching it. Afterwards you remember small things, but you can't describe why a turn of phrase or some character being incredulous throws you into a fit.

Maybe I didn't give it long enough. I've always had a problem with women "dumbing down" to be funny. And it just reads phoney coming from ZD. The guys are cuties, however!

Baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no, sir - Mind if I move a little closer..

She's delightfully normal..

Maybe she reacts in a "jess-like way" because the girl plays herself on the show. Ever see her in an interview? Same self-absorbed, adolescent behavior. She's not funny. The show sucks. And I wonder how much the nomination cost her PR people. No way that no talent could have gotten the nomination legitimately.

It's funny to hear these comments now because a few months ago she and her husband separated and everyone made out like he was the bad guy. Just because someone's cute doesn't mean they're
intelligent or fun to live with.

I think what bothers me about her has nothing to do with her looks or any of the sort. She seems to stereotype or perhaps even be the poster child for the nerd girl genre. We get enough stereotyping as it is, that is to say that people already assume if a female enjoys D&D, comics & graphic novels, mmorpgs, pc video games, and etc. then the female must be unattractive, fat, or a goof ball one can't take seriously. Zooey demonstrates the latter. This show (I tried to watch it) was even worse than Big Bang Theory, people who are actually established in nerd or geek culture see it as a large generalization of a subculture many identify with. In other words, it's cool to be part of this subculture now which ultimately alienates those who were picked on in school for being truly who they were if you catch my drift. Zooey doesn't make that easy because of the permagirl feel she has to her. Everything is cute with her and she exhibits clumsiness and an inability to express herself without seeming like she is a special needs girl. It is because she is held up (just like Felicia Day) as this image of what it means to be both nerdy and a girl that annoys me and many others. I would actually be less critical of her if she would stop behaving like a 17 year old.

Thanks for articulating exactly what I don't like about her and her show. She's glorifying the "stupid girl".

When I think of cute and quirky, Kristin Chenoweth comes to mind long before Zooey Deschanel. Zooey just seems to be trying too hard, and as a result comes across more spazzy than lovable.

If you want to see another side of Zooey Deschanel (and Will Ferrell too) check out a little known film named "Winter Passing"
