Andre Turner, So Cal Edison Shooter, Seemed 'Like A Real Stand-Up Guy'

Andre Turner So Cal Edison Shooter

ANDREW DALTON   12/18/11 10:03 PM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — One victim remained hospitalized Sunday as authorities searched for a motive after an employee shot four co-workers, killing two, before turning the gun on himself at a utility office east of Los Angeles.

Angela Alvarez, 46, was in critical condition following Friday's shooting inside a complex that houses more than a thousand Southern California Edison employees. There was no new information on her condition.

Authorities have identified the shooter as Andre Turner, 48, of Norco in Riverside County. Investigators say Turner methodically picked off his co-workers with a semiautomatic handgun, and then shot himself.

Turner's death was ruled a suicide, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz told The Associated Press. Turner, a systems analyst at Edison, had worked at the company for seven years, utility spokesman Steven Conroy said.

Abhay Pimpale, a 38-year-old independent contractor from Montebello, was also injured. He was released from the hospital Saturday. Pimpale, the father of a 3-year-old son and a newborn baby, declined to speak to reporters, telling KCAL-TV he only wanted to "spend time with my family."

The two other men killed were Henry Serrano, 56, of Walnut, and Robert Scott Lindsay, 53, of Chino Hills, coroner and company officials said. Turner and Lindsay died at the scene. Serrano died while being taken to a hospital, the coroner's office said.

Lindsay was a manager in the IT division at Edison and worked for the company for 29 years, company officials said. He was married and was a father. Serrano, a manager in the same area, was with the company for 26 years.

All five people worked in the same area of the same building at the office park in Irwindale, a small industrial city in the San Gabriel Valley, authorities said.

Authorities have released no information on a possible motive for what the Edison statement called "one of the most horrific events the company has experienced in its 125-year history."

Turner's wife, Jean Turner, wrote in a brief statement given to KTLA, "We are in shock and still trying to process this tragic event. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families."

Deidre Corbin, a neighbor in an upscale neighborhood near a golf club in Norco, said she spoke with Jean Turner shortly after the shooting was reported.

"I had asked her if she received a call, a text, or anything from him," Corbin told KCAL-TV. "She said that she hadn't heard anything."

It was not until hours later that Jean Turner learned it was her husband who authorities identified as the gunman.

Robert Young, a 49-year-old telemarketer who lives across the street from Turner's home, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that "everything looked completely normal over there."

"I never had an inkling he'd do something like that," Young said. "But who knows what happens in somebody's mind? People say, `He lived in that nice house, in a nice neighborhood, what could be wrong?'"

The Press-Enterprise reported Sunday that Turner bought his 5,000 square-foot, five-bedroom house near the Hidden Valley Golf Club for $711,000 when it was new in 2004.

The Riverside County assessor's office shows its current value as $543,000 and it was put up for sale in November for $590,000, the newspaper said.

Horrified employees barricaded themselves behind locked doors and hid under desks Friday afternoon as Turner walked through the office firing a semi-automatic handgun, authorities said.

The office complex and nearby schools were locked down as the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's SWAT team responded to several 911 calls.

No gunfire was exchanged after officers arrived, and police believed Turner acted alone.

In the hours after the shooting, police cars, ambulances and fire trucks surrounded the building, and dozens of workers emerged with their hands over their heads.

The complex is surrounded by a fence and patrolled by a security guard. Employees need a security card to get into the building, said Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison. About 230 employees work in the building where the shooting took place, and about 1,100 employees work in the complex. Edison didn't say whether the facility would be reopened Monday.

The company said it was offering grief counseling for employees and is establishing a fund to support the victims' families. Edison will donate $100,000 and seek employee contributions.

Irwindale is a city of about 1,400 residents, 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the Irwindale Speedway auto racetrack and large rock and gravel quarries.

Southern California Edison, a huge utility that provides power for most of the region, is one of its largest companies, employing 2,100 people.

SCE-IT sounds like you are part of management or are in agreement with the abusive management culture - since you say you worked WITH the victims and not for them. SCE managers MUST stop abusing their employees. Why do multiple employees report one manager at SCE, but the manager suffers NO consequences? They might be moved to another department, but suffer no consequences. Sadly, the employees have no recourse. Don’t forget he targeted managers; not the banks. My heart goes out to ALL three families who lost their loved ones.

I am also an Edison employee. I am not from the same work group, but from the same floor and I worked with the victims very closely. I knew Henry, Scott and Angie very well. Both deceased were the nicest guys. To describe them as bullies who pushed anyone to the limit is spitting on the memories of two nice people. Andre was over his head in his work as well as in his home and personal finances. I am making far more money than Andre did, but I can't afford living like him. I don't know his personnel record, but it looks like his entire life was one big chaos and mismanagement. In all likelihood he blamed his mess on others.

My condolences to you for the loss of your co-workers. I wish you the best in coming to terms and healing from this tragic and evil act. Blaming others for our choices is an act of a coward.

This had nothing to do with his financial situation! I am an Edison employee who works in the IT department. And worked with Andre Turner. I was there when all of this happened, 3 feet away from it. I lost my friend, co-workers and boss to the situation. Andre was a very good guy despite the situation that folded. All I can say is Management was bullying him and pushing him to his limit. Though I do not condone his choices and the lives he has taken, I can empathize with the emotions and stress that can be brought on by corporate politics.

All of you only hear what is being presented to the media via a spokesperson when it comes to the full story. There is more to this than just someone having a bad day and taking it out on everyone. Especially when I am being told by the very person to leave the area as he continues to go after the specific individuals.

I am very angry and annoyed to hear all this hear say from people just speculating the reasons. To those who continue to say ignorant comments, keep it to yourselves. I will have to live with this for the rest of my life, where all of you have to do is click on to the next story.

You are absolute right when you say people are just speculating. Forgive the ignorance of my post. I want you to know how sorry I am that you have had to endure such a tragic and violent act. My condolences to every human being that has been harmed by his evil actions.

I am an employee from your area. You sound like the typical SCE employees who feel the world owes you something. Andre was over his head with this work. Henry and Scott were the nicest people. If you can tell me Scott was capable of bullying anyone I doubt you even knew him.

That's the likely motive; financial stress flipped his switch. Thanks, Wall Street.

Shame on him for taking innocent lives! Many of us have been burdened with "financial stress" and we don't go around killing people. His flipped switch was his inability to come to terms with his own responsibility in spending $711,000 in the first place, probably to stroke his own EGO. When people believe that having MORE is going to make them happy, they are delusional. THINGS don't buy happiness, and to BUY into the marketing of this theory is a CHOICE. I am all for PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and CONSCIOUSNESS, which by the way is a lot of work, but then we have a lot of LAZY human beings that don't want to do the INTERNAL work of becoming conscious.

"He Seemed Like A Real Stand-Up Guy." If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that. My condolences to the families. I just don't understand why people can't go by themselves.

Andre Turner’s wife is Willie Jean Turner
Police Citation, 19 F.3d 12
The relevant facts for purposes of this appeal include the circumstances surrounding the execution of a search warrant on September 20, 1991 at the home of Willie Jean Turner ("Turner") and the conduct of, and evidence presented at, the trial on the merits which was held from November 23--December 4, 1992.
Waller lived in Vienna, Maryland and, in August of 1988, began dating Turner. According to Turner, Waller stayed at her house "five or six nights a week" in 1991. On September 20, 1991, police executed a search warrant at Turner's house. Turner was found to have marijuana stashed in her bra and pocketbook, and a radio scanner and $3,793 were found in the kitchen. The police found Waller hiding in Turner's bedroom closet. Along with Waller, the police found in the closet eighty-seven grams of crack cocaine wrapped in a brown paper bag, some marijuana, and $1,037.

First, Tyler Brehm shoots up Hollywood last week, kills a man and dies by "suicide by cop."

Now this man violently flips out killing two people and wounding four.

The stress of a faltering economy, mixed with the unrealistic expectations of the Christmas holiday, are pushing those marginally on the edge of sanity, over the edge.

I'll bet there will be more incidents like these before the year is out.
