Kim Jong Il took over power from his father in 1994, continuing many of Kim Il Sung's policies. He invested heavily in military development, while devoting few resources to the country's economic and social development.
The 'Dear Leader' ruled with an iron hand, and under his rule North Korea remained one of the most isolated states in the world.
