Can Mold Cause Pneumonia? Brittany Murphy's Mom Says Mold Caused Daughter's Death

Mold Pneumonia

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/19/11 05:25 PM ET Updated: 12/21/11 02:03 PM ET

The mother of actress Brittany Murphy, who died in 2009 of pneumonia, is saying that her daughter and her son-in-law passed away because of toxic mold in the couple's home, according to news reports.

Last year, the Los Angeles coroner's office reported that Murphy died of a combination of pneumonia, anemia and prescription drug intoxication, according to ABC News, with no evidence that mold was a culprit. Murphy's husband also died from pneumonia a few months later.

"It is unusual to have two people die of similar circumstances with pneumonia. We've been looking at it and saying, 'Something isn't right,'" Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner Ed Winter told ABC News. "I'm not saying you can't get pneumonia from mold, but we did all the tests on it -- mold did not come up in the toxicology reports."

But TMZ reported that Murphy's mother believes the mold in the house caused their illnesses and deaths.

We are exposed to molds all the time, but some molds are more dangerous than others because they produce toxic substances called mycotoxins, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mold can occur in buildings when there is dampness from water incursion (like from leaking pipes or rainwater), the CDC reported.

Exposure to mold can lead to allergic reactions, asthma attacks and even pneumonia, although pneumonia as a result of mold exposure is rare, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Infections can also occur in people whose immune systems are weakened. Pneumonia is defined as lung inflammation caused by infection by an organism (such as a virus, bacteria or another kind of organism), HealthCentral reported.

The CDC reports that a condition called "hypersensitivity pneumonitis" is a possible complication of mold exposure. The condition might seem like pneumonia, but it can't be cured by antibiotics, and its symptoms include cough, chills, fever, fatigue, muscle aches and shortness of breath. If a person is continually exposed to the mold, the damage caused by hypersensitivity pneumonitis can bring on scarring and permanent damage, according to the CDC.

Repeated episodes of hypersensitive pneumonitis can lead to bacterial pneumonia, according to North Carolina State University.

If you think that you might be getting sick because of mold in your home or workplace, the CDC advises seeking a diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible from a doctor. In addition, it's important to immediately notify the people in charge of building maintenance of the health problems.

Two years ago, 68 residents of an apartment complex in California sued their complex, saying that they were made sick from toxic mold growing in the building, CBS News reported. One of the women in the suit, Jennifer Lair, clams that the mold was responsible for her 2-year-old's death (her daughter's official cause of death was pneumonia).

We experienced significant rainfall this spring and the city's sewer system did not work so our entire subdivision flooded. Water was coming into out basement like a mini geyser. We had about 9 inches of standing water. Everything was saturated so it was tossed out with the exception of the furnace, hot water tank and a deep freezer. We set out over the next 6 week ripping out the paneling, drywall and parts of the wood studs that were not dry after 6 weeks. The city sent blowers to help dry things out and a incompetent sanitation company to spray for bacteria and mold. We noticed mold growth after a week because the summer was hot & humid so we began spraying for mold on a weekly basis. From the day of the flood I had prolific post nasal drip, headache, red eyes, headache & sinus congestion. So did my husband & son. My husband had hip resurfacing in July and he told his Dr. about the flood so as a precaution a nasal swap was taken. His nasal passages were full of bacteria so that had to be treated before they would do the procedure. So we started spraying for mold twice a week. In August we had the basement floor treated and sealed and the rest of the house treated for mold and bacteria. The symptoms have subsided drastically but we still spray for mold because we live in an area with a high water table.

Why do that and force our insurance companies to pay for it driving up our premiums when you can now get radiated for free by TSA at the airport.

Most companies and apartments won't take responsibility for mold causing health problems.

Bull. That doesn't cause someone to die and why are you so judgmental? You should be ashamed of yourself for smearing the dead. If you care so much why aren't you attacking the pharmaceutical companies that produced the drugs.

Our predatory healthcare system preys on the sick and their medicine almost always causes more harm. If you are so concerned why not work towards legalizing marijuana.

Double that shame on you, lisabara!!! You are very ignorant on this subject and should be quiet if you have nothing of substance to contribute. First of all, mold exposure wears down your immune system so naturally it would appear that they didn't take care of themselves! How could they????? Their systems were being systematically destroyed by the toxic mold spores that contain mycotoxcins they were inhaling, ingested and absorbing through their skin. Everything normal/ not sick people do like drink, take prescription medication, now has a different affect on you when your system is under attack. Secondly from the other medical ailments I have read Brittany had that that ignorant media sources are reporting that contributed to her death were: thyroid problems, anorexia weight loss, chronic flu like symptoms which severely affects immune system, etc. All of these are mold exposure illnesses. As a mother of 5 you should be quiet and educate yourself if you have nothing kind to say!

Sharon Murphy didn't just yield to advice against a mold lawsuit before, she actually (according to reports) disparaged the idea http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20405130,00.html. This seems to me to undermine her case. I note that the story has broken on the anniversary of Brittany's death and that Alex Ben Block seems to know more than anyone else about it http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/brittany-murphy-death-mold-275478

I don't understand what point you are trying to make.

I'm merely asking who gave the story to TMZ. The anniversary of Brittany's birth last year was used to publicize her mother's now defunct book project - it's a technique that publicists use. I'm asking who is publicizing this law suit - if it's Sharon's lawyers why are they refusing comment?

Number one is all houses have some forms of mold no matter how old or new..mold is present..be it from a leaky toilet that you cannot see to a copper water pipe that sweats in the wall of your home..having no fan in your bathroom and mold spores build up on the shower and bathtub walls..on the outside and inside..mold is everywhere. virtually unstopable..

Dan, there is a point where the mold becomes overwhelming and so toxic that it does kill. And there are molds that are more toxic than others.

I totally agree with this. I had pneumonia two times while working in an office with mold. That happened two winters in a row and I could hardly get up to go to the restroom. I had to crawl. It was awful. And I had hardly ever been sick in my life. Then I found out the office had $15,000 worth of mold removal. It is awful. Fortunately I got to the hospital both times before I died.

I too was immune compromised and started working in a mold infested building for a bank. They had more concern for their multi-million dollar mainframe than the poor sickened employees that worked there. People's lives are ruined and some don't get better. I'm sorry for you and hope you were able to recover.

The CDC is responsible for exposing their employees to mold. I know of two that are so sick they are totally disabled. Mold illness or sick building syndrome is a serious health issue but is covered up due to liability issues. Schools, business and homes infected with mold cause grave harm but if you bring you child in with respiratory problems to a state of the art pediatrician they will not eve look for mold illness. And the Visual Contrast Sensitivity Test is over 90% accurate, cost less than $50 to administer and has been used by the department of defense for over 20 years is not even used. It would be a good first step in determining exposure to a neurotoxin but our predatory healthcare delivery system doesn't make room for something cost effective or a test that would prove liability. We can't have that, no we would rather pay thousands chasing drugs that treat symptoms rather than cure or find the true cause.

The ACOEM disagrees. See the last paragraph of the summary.

It's not some conspiracy by the CDC.
And don't get me started about that quack Ritchie Shoemaker either.

Here's a peer reviewed abstract debunking the ACOEM position paper on mold. You really need to do some research before you go posting papers that have been totally discredited.

A critique of the ACOEM statement on mold: undisclosed conflicts of interest in the creation of an "evidence-based" statement.

Bull. Vicodin doesn't kill for the most part but mold does, Lyme disease does and so does mercury and gadolinium poisoning. Keep your head buried in the sand until a loved one gets sick or you get sick. Then take the toxic drugs they offer to treat you and you'll be totally disabled before long and your long term disability company you thought would be there for you will deny you benefits and give some idiotic excuse like vicodin did it. People like you will never understand until it happens to you.

Murphy and her busband both had long histories of drug abuse. "Toxic mold" is for the most part a money making scheme propigated by insurance companies. You need to put your personal experiences aside and calm down.
