2 Muslim Men Kicked Off Flight Sue Airlines

Muslims Kicked Off Plane Sue

TRAVIS LOLLER   12/19/11 05:54 PM ET  AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two Muslim men who say they were kicked off an airplane in May after the pilot objected to their presence are suing Delta Air Lines Inc. and a regional carrier that operated the Delta Connection flight from Memphis to Charlotte, N.C.

According to a suit filed Monday in federal court in Memphis, Masudur Rahman and Mohamed Zaghloul were traveling to Charlotte to attend a conference on anti-Muslim discrimination at the time.

Rahman, who is an adjunct instructor of Arabic at the University of Memphis, has said he was dressed in traditional Indian clothing. Zaghloul, who is a religious leader with the Islamic Association of Greater Memphis, was dressed in Arab garb that included traditional headgear.

The two passed through regular security screening and were waiting at the gate to board when they were pulled out of line and subjected to a second security check, according to the suit. They were questioned about their trip and their luggage and belongings were searched before the men were cleared and allowed to board.

Shortly after the plane pulled away from the gate, the pilot announced the aircraft was returning to the terminal. Once there, according to the suit, the men were pulled off the plane, asked more questions and searched again, this time with a "comprehensive body pat down."

Although they were again cleared to board, the pilot refused to allow them back on the plane, the suit claimed. The plane began to depart without the men when an unnamed airline official called it back and it returned to the gate for a second time.

The suit claims the official then boarded the plane and spoke with the pilot, who said he would not allow Rahman and Zaghloul on the plane because their presence could make other passengers uncomfortable.

According to the suit, the official told passengers that anyone who was apprehensive about the presence of the two men could take a different plane and would be given a generous voucher. There were no takers. The pilot still refused to allow the men to board and they were booked on a later flight, the suit said.

Delta and Atlantic Southeast Airlines Inc., which is owned by SkyWest Inc., issued a statement Monday that read: "Atlantic Southeast and Delta oppose discrimination in any form from any source, and our employees act at all times in the best interest of passenger safety and security. We cannot comment further on pending litigation."

Both airlines are based in Atlanta.

Federal regulation allows an airline to refuse to transport an individual who it decides is unsafe. The plane's captain has ultimate authority. But the decision cannot be made solely on the basis of person's race, color, national origin, religion, ethnicity, or sex.

"Defendants excluded Mr. Rahman and Mr. Zaghloul because of the way they looked," the suit claims. "They had beards, wore traditional Arabic clothing, and were visibly foreign. Defendants unlawfully relied upon these characteristics to conclude that Mr. Rahman and Mr. Zaghloul were security threats, disallowing them from utilizing their purchased tickets."

The suit said the two were traveling to a conference on "`Islamophobia,' and how Muslims religious leaders could help address this issue."

The suit seeks unspecified compensation for the men's losses and injuries as well as punitive damages.

Rule of law vs rule of fear. Law is the better, saner, safer choice. Fear is corrosive, as evidenced by many of the comments.

As a non-christian, and non-muslim person, the war between the two faiths looks pointless and stupid to me. Many many good men, women, and children have died for this stupid fight, and in recent generations of zionist jews, I get to see another of these faiths rejoin the deadly idiocy. Most of this fighting does no good in the world, and contributes to destroying the message that jesus and mohammed both spoke about, as well as most of the prophets. That is, unless, you read how barbaric they actually were with a strict and unflinching look at the passages in all the "holy" texts.

There is little to praise from anybody who does a strict interpretation of any of the abrahamic faiths in my opinion, and they all treat me as sub-human in any case. As a gay man, I find it hard not to laugh at any member of these faiths who decries the others as "more dangerous" than their own. I get to spend my life being blamed for other peoples marriages failing, the preponderance of other people getting STD's, and most interestingly, terrorist attacks and natural disasters. If people wonder why I cannot take their religion seriously, I just tell them it is something we all have in common.

As a citizen of the United States, I think these men should be praised. After all, what is more American than sueing somebody?

That pilot was incorrect in disallowing their boarding of the plane. This type of behaviour is what fuels the popular fear of Islam. It's truly outrageous how so many think they are 'better' than another because of religion or appearance. It's ignorance and bigotry at its finest. At the very least, that pilot should be terminated.

I dont blame the pilots. Islam follows the practice of Taqiyya. Muslims are very adept at this.

Regarding 3:28, Ibn Kathir, a prominent authority writes, "meaning, except those believers who in some areas or times fear for their safety from the disbelievers. In this case, such believers are allowed to show friendship to the disbelievers outwardly, but never inwardly." He quotes Muhammad's companion, Abu Ad-Darda', who said "we smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them," and Al-Hasan who said "the Tuqyah is acceptable till the Day of Resurrection."

Not just the pilots, every body in western world needs to be careful about these savages in modern day cloathing.Their ultimate aim is to conver the whole world to Islam and facilitate the Kaliphate rule.

of course if one person said it once it must be true for all in the religion.

that is how we also know that all christians are terrorists just like the olympic bomber...

"According to Chester L. Quarles, professor of criminal justice at the University of Mississippi,... Christian .....followers hold that non-Caucasian peoples have no souls, and.... affirm that Jesus Christ paid only for the sins of the House of Israel and the House of Judah and that salvation must be received through both redemption and race."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Identity
(see.. i even cited a source which makes my remarks even truer than yours...)

this, of course, explains why all christians are racists, and why (since they think we have no souls) they don't think it is a sin to kill anyone of us and why, as everyone knows, christians eat the babies of non-christians and call it veal.

check under your bed, their may be a christian lurking there...

I wouldn't exactly be jumping up and down about quoting Wikipedia or today's modern 1984 potential for propaganda as a valid source, just saying.

You're spewing a lot of hate there, Punky Punk. Pretty bold to call all Christians racists. You can't possibly believe that. In every society, race, culture you have the majority of people which are good people; people who love and treat other people as their brothers and sisters no matter what religion. Then you have the omnipresent 10% that are not good people for whatever reason. It's always been that way. It will always be that way. The muslims are in the news now. It seems to be their turn in the proverbial barrel. In my book it's a sin for anyone to kill any one for any reason. In my book it's also a sin to lie to anyone for any reason. Eating babies.......have you lost your mind?? BTW. My Doctor is a Muslim. We talk about religion all the time. I bought a Qur'an and read quite a bit. There is some disturbing stuff in there, Surah 4:34 for one. I can't get over that one. Do that here you're going to jail, son. You're spewing a lot of hate. I can't imagine living like that. It's a sick world and I'm a happy guy....Calm down Punky.

I guess since freedom of religion isn't important anymore, you're all endorsing Obama's signing of the NDAA bill in the near future, which includes a provision for indefinitely detaining American citizens for suspicious speech or activity. People like you are the reason politicians have been able to draw up and pass this law. You're setting this country back 50 years. So much for American exceptionaliam.
09:57 PM on 12/24/2011
Everyone is defending this racist pilot, and why shouldn't you? Like him, you've been weaned on a healthy diet of anti-Muslim bigotry for the past 10 years. I wonder if you'd all jump to his defense if he had denied an African American to board a flight because having a Negro on the plane was a concern to him (you know they commit a lot of crimes). Or if he had denied boarding to an Orthodox Jew dressed in traditional "headgear" because he was concerned about religious extremism. You'd probably be calling for his termination and arrest. Selective racism is still racism. Don't flaunt it. It makes you look stupid.

Did this pilot seriously think anyone trying to bring explosives or weapons aboard would do it by wearing clothes that'd make them stand out like doggies'? I mean really, that is so stupid.

Considering recent events, isn't it time that both parties exercised some good judgement and restraint? I don't necessarily condone the captain's actions, but then I don't condone the law suit filed by the muslim men either. Wouldn't a more constructive path be one of understanding and reconciliation?

People get to choose their religion, but not typically their genes or ethnicity.

I personally think discrimination based on religion is okay, because religion is a choice.

And yet the anti-religious talk about the religious as if they're all brainwashed - doesn't that rather undermine the idea that it's a choice?

Discrimination on the basis of religion in something where belief is IRRELEVANT is disgusting. And if it's okay, then you shouldn't have any problem with being discriminated against for not having religious beliefs, or for your political beliefs, or any other beliefs.
