HBO Cancels 'Hung,' 'Bored To Death' And 'How To Make It In America,' Renews 'Enlightened'

Hbo Cancels Bored To Death

First Posted: 12/20/11 01:37 PM ET Updated: 12/20/11 01:37 PM ET

HBO has canceled three of its shows: "Hung," "How to Make it in America" and "Bored to Death," Variety was the first to report. But the primetime cable network did spare one series. According to TVLine, the struggling "Enlightened" was renewed.

"Hung," which just ended its third season, starred Thomas Jane as a gym teacher-turned male hooker. Jane Adams, Anne Heche and Rebecca Creskoff also starred. The Season 3 finale aired on Dec. 4 and pulled in under 1 million viewers.

The Bryan Greenberg-fronted "How to Make it in America," about breaking into New York City's fashion scene, just ended its second season. The show, which also starred Lake Bell and Victor Rasuk, brought in under 600,000 for its Season 2 finale.

"Bored to Death" wrapped its third season in late November. The show starred Jason Schwartzman as a fictional Jonathan Ames as well as Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis. Despite its impressive cast, "Bored to Death" only had 200,000 viewers tune into the Season 3 finale last month.

The survivor, "Enlightened," starring Laura Dern, will return for a second season. The show recently picked up several Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Comedy.

I'm a former Hung viewer. However, I could no longer tolerate the female "madam". Her weekly weakness nearly made my blood boil. After the first season, I called it quit. Perhaps, the show (this particular character) improved after I dumped it. However, due to the fact that the show is being cancelled, I can only assume overall progress was never made.

I thought HTMINA was pretty good.. As well as Hung. I could have done without Bored To Death though... I got it... But it wasn't for me.

Bored to Death never new what it wanted to be. They tried a little comeback but unlike Ted Danson's hair it just didn't stick. Enlightened has Mike White.

BTD was a pretentious mess, like watching someone pleasure themselves while thinking of themselves. Plus it was shot in a mixed neighborhood that was never demographically represented on the show. Bottom line, it was only funny to the three guys that look like the actors.

Wrong. I don't look like any of them and thought it was funny and different. You don't always get that combination.

Your opinion does not rule. Furthermore, who cares if was shot in a mixed neighborhood? What's your point? You need to know the demographics before watching any television show? What happens if the city is fictitious? What do you do then? Can you handle it? On another note, I am a female who loved the show.

No, but part of the marketing (I live in NYC) was that it used the neighborhood as a character. Maybe that marketing strategy didn't happen elsewhere. It didn't help my opinion of the show; it exacerbated my negative feelings about it. But that's what opinion is; one person's feelings.

Now, see, I cancelled my HBO a while back because I wasn't watching it enough to justify the cost. Now I've saved myself all the pain of losing a show I might have liked. If I had liked it. If I had watched it. Which I didn't.

Never even heard of these three shows. Sorry!

What??? How to Make it In America too???? Damn Damn Damn! I think the problem was the pacing. It took too long for them to see success. Kind of like when you run a real business. I guess for televised purposes they should have had them make it big..and be the next Entourage. (Which was kind of boring to me..they always landed on their feet..ALL the time.)
