Obama To Boehner: Pass The Senate Payroll Tax Cut Now

First Posted: 12/20/11 03:08 PM ET Updated: 12/20/11 04:33 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at Tuesday's White House briefing to send a message directly to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio): Quit the politicking and vote on the Senate-passed payroll tax cut. Now.

"I'm calling on the Speaker and the House Republican leadership to bring up the Senate bill for a vote," Obama said during brief remarks. "This is not poker, this is not a game," he continued. "We have more important things to worry about than saving face, or figuring out internal caucus politics."

The president's comments came just after House Republicans rejected a Senate package that would have extended a soon-to-expire payroll tax cut for another two months, with GOP leaders calling for a year-long extension or no extension at all. Other provisions in the Senate package -- an extension of unemployment insurance benefits and a stopgap measure to prevent automatic cuts to doctors' Medicare payments -- are also on track to expire on Jan. 1 without congressional action.

The White House and Senate Democrats have summarily rejected calls by House Republican leaders to go into conference and make changes to the Senate-passed bill. Instead, their strategy appears to be to put pressure on House GOP leaders to cave, bring up the Senate-passed bill for a straight up-or-down vote, and watch it pass. Tuesday's House vote wasn't a straight up-or-down vote on the Senate bill; instead, it was on a "motion to reject" the bill. A straight vote on the bill could expedite it directly to the president, and Democrats contend it would pass if House Republican leaders would let it come up.

Obama dismissed the House GOP argument that a two-month extension isn't long enough, since Democrats and the White House have said that they, too, agree on the need for a year-long extension. The problem, however, is that the parties can't agree on how to pay for it. The two-month extension is fully paid for and costs $33 billion; a year-long extension would come in at about $200 billion.

Obama called the two-month extension an "insurance policy" so the tax cut doesn't lapse as lawmakers take more time to sort out how to pay for the bigger package. What House Republicans are "really trying to do" by demanding changes to the Senate-passed package is "wring concessions from Democrats on issues that have nothing to do with the payroll tax cut -- issues where the parties fundamentally disagree," he said.

"Let's not play brinksmanship. The American people are weary of it; they're tired of it. They expect better," said the president, who abruptly left without taking questions.

It IS a game, Mr. POTUS and you know it.
It is a game played for all the marbles and you are in intimate contact with the ones with the bags of marbles that must be transported, a little at a time, by 18-wheeler trucks or C5-A aircraft.

Obama can give special environmental exemptions to BP to drill in the Gulf and gives Brazil 2 billion to drill. Yet he punishes US oil companies and their workers and refuses any chance of energy independence from middle east oil. Why continue to penalize the US?

Because there are still numerous state governments that have reservations about the pipeline, Kansas and Nebraska being 2.
Because most of the jobs will be temporary construction jobs with workers swarming into areas that may not have the facilities to house them, feed them, provide potable water to them, nor roads to access the construction site.
Because the process construction itself may damage the environment - heavy equipment being transported over non-existent roads into undeveloped areas.
Because safety provisions during construction, not only for human power, but for fire suppression, water contamination, dust control, bad weather are not in place, even in writing.
Because it crosses one of the biggest aquifiers east of the Mississippi
Because the permanent jobs will be held by the Canadians who will not pay taxes in the U.S. but will benefit from the U.S. infrastructure that U.S. taxpayers have paid for.
Because as massive a project as the pipeline has to be very carefully evaluated with enough time for all the studies to be completed -- it's called risk management.
Because shale oil is the dirtiest kind of oil there is
Because refineries will be "cracking" shale oil, creating more pollution in the air than "sweet crude" oil creates
Because if the pipeline breaks, cleanup from shale oil technology has yet to be developed.

Any questions?

Passing this tax holiday extension for two months or one year is just wrong. The people who will be receiving the whopping $40/week extra income are the very same people who, upon reaching retirement, aren't going to understand that the reason they're not going to get any Social Security benefits is because they, in essence, took their Social Security with these tax breaks. Obama is famous for touting all these "feel good" bills that will get him re-elected .... and by the time everyone realizes what the long term effects are, Obama will be long gone and whoever is in office at the time can take the fall.

Have you seen obama's website spouting: What Does $40 Mean to You? This in response the Congress not passing the payroll tax cut.

Did you know that the House plan is to give $40 a week for a 52 week period, or $1000.

obama's/Senate plan is to give $40 a week for 8 weeks, or $320.

I'll go with the House plan.

""We have more important things to worry about than saving face, or figuring out internal caucus politics.""
--------------------------------------------------->

Dear Mr. President:

You are wrong. In the legislative world there is nothing more important than those things. We hold nothing as near and dear to our hearts. Surely you must realize that by now.

Sincerely,

The House of Non-representatives

....no matter that the payroll tax cut has to come out of the Social Security Trust Fund.

No matter---and don't bother people with such details. It's more important that desperate people get 40 bucks more every two weeks.

Obama spends that on custom dog biscuits every two weeks....

I had to work today and will tommorrow, back on tuesday. It's a bit galling to imagine the gov, Our elected representatives, Our Employees... in such a hurry to enjoy a break lasting how long?

Hey gov, do the job We are paying you to do. No matter how long it takes, even if you have to "work" on Christmas day, as millions of your Employers will need to do!

"This is not poker, this is not a game" seeeeeeee, it's all about "Change" ---and being as how it's an election year---the "American people are tired" seeeeeee---we do it all for them all of a sudden John,
and if they somehow catch on that I'm useless seeeeee, it'll be the last great vacation I get to take in a long time--------" Then having worked so hard at this piece of Presidency--he abruptly left without taking any questions. Obviously exhausted and in need of a vacation.

The man has no shame. The Republicans want to pass the cut for a year. So that Obama can cave to his masters, he wants to postpone the Pipeline, and make it seem that the repubs are the ones holding it up. Then after Jan. 2013, he will allow the pipeline, since that is obviously the right thing to do.

Man, the American people are no longer fooled by this hypocrite.

The pipeline should have nothing to do with the bill, it is a separate issue, and should stand on it's own merit and own vote.

The Republicans want it for a year, but they insist it be paid for by making Americans suffer more hardship, while their oil buddies make butt-loads of cash. The spin is that the Dems are unreasonable. Republicans are the pot that loves to call the kettle black.

Three cheers for Obama!

Keep at them Mr. President. If we have to do without the payroll tax-cut, then we simply will.

If this is a game of poker, then Boehner is holding an empty hand and knows it. Keep in mind why the B-man wants the year-long package done and finished. The longer this business drags on the more childish and dishonest the Republicans appear to the US public. And the longer the pressure builds on him to allow the rich and super-rich people to start paying their fair share.
